French officials have been left baffled after hundreds of thousands of bizarre sponge-like balls likened to yellow mousse washed up on a coastline.
The mystery objects have been found in huge numbers on the beaches of France’s northern Pas-de-Calais department.
Experts say they are still trying to work out where the balls come from – but officials insist that ‘to their knowledge’ they do not pose a risk to the public.
