130+ seals found dead in Lake Baikal, supposedly from cardiac arrest or storm

A mass death of over 130 seals has been recorded by local environmental services on the shore of Lake Baikal, in the regions of Irkutsk and Buryatia, Wednesday. Authorities are investigating whether the seals died from infection. According to preliminary autopsy data, the animals died of cardiac arrest. The deaths could also have been caused by natural circumstances such as a storm. Investigations initiated by Slyudyansky district’s prosecutor’s office are ongoing.
