U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis has submitted his resignation, telling President Donald Trump in a letter that their views are not aligned, just a day after Trump’s surprise announcement on U.S. troops in Syria.
Trump said in a tweet on Thursday that Mattis would retire at the end of February, but the secretary’s letter to the president points to a difference in their views as the reason for his departure.
