Hebei is a major agricultural province in China and an important producer of cereal crops. Under the CCP’s rule, grain land is typically allocated on the basis of household size to ensure that each rural household produces enough for its own consumption needs. However, land seizures in the name of commercial and residential need is frequent. It is a well-known phenomenon of bureaucratic corruption. This phenomenon has not ceased despite looming food shortages during the pandemic.

Zhengding County sits in the river basin of Hebei. Recently, following five land acquisition notices issued by the county, local officials hired tractors to run over wheat fields just as the wheat was about to mature. Local peasants protested the action, as they were not given proper consultation and negotiation. The following video shows two tractors stopped by peasants who placed themselves under them.

A woman said,
“Look at what the officials of Zhengding county are doing.
This piece of land is [approximately 0.83 acre] alloted to 14 peasants. They won’t even spare us the green wheat. They enforce this without any negotiation, nothing.”
“Just look, these tractors. See all these tractors here.”
“Look at what these officials have been doing.
They have confiscated our cell phones.
We have finally located a junk cell phone so that we can record this.
Just take a look, everyone.”
“This is Jiaojiaopu Village, Nanniu Township, Zhengding County.
This is the land allotted to us.
In the name of road construction, this is how they do it.
We won’t be able to survive.
They occupy our land and leave us with nothing.
Everyone,have a look.”

After the video was made available online, Chinese netizens commented:

Comment 1: “Who are these idiots? Are they still human? Why must life-saving food be eliminated?”

Comment 2: “These bastards, even if they have to grab the land by cheating the peasants, wouldn’t it be OK just to wait for a few days after it’s harvested?”

Comment 3: “While you are starving to death, do you see any communist officials eating less? They don’t care about the people.”

Comment 4: “[The farmers] survived the drought and insect damage, and the wheat field that was about to be harvested was to be destroyed, the family had to lay themselves under the tractor and fight with their lives.”
