Merdan Ghappar, 31, used to be a fashion model for Chinese online retailer Taobao. His photo appeared on BBC News earlier this month, but it had nothing to do with his modeling career. Instead, it was a video footage of the inhumane conditions he experienced at a detention center where he and other Uyghur Muslims are currently being detained in China’s far western region of Xinjiang.

On Aug. 4, BBC released a video that shows Ghappar detained in a room with his right hand holding the camera, and left hand handcuffed to the metal frame of the bed.

In 2018, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) rapidly and extensively built detention centers and concentration camps in Xinjiang with the excuse of “re-education.” In August that year, Ghappar was persecuted. He was arrested and sentenced to 16 months in prison for selling cannabis. His friends insisted that he was framed.

On Jan. 15, Ghappar was put on a flight from Foshan and escorted by two officers back to his home city of Kucha in Xinjiang.

More than a month later, his family received his messages on WeChat. The video he sent, which was recorded on his cellphone, showed the terrible experience he endured after returning to Xinjiang. Ghappar wrote: “50-60 people were locked in a small room no bigger than 50 square meters, men on the right, women on the left.” “Everyone was wearing a so-called ‘four-piece-suit’—a black head sack, handcuffs, leg shackles and an iron chain connecting the cuffs to the shackles.” The police officers did not allow them to take off the black head sacks. In addition to the unsanitary conditions, he said there was no room to lie down.

Ilshat Hassan Kokbore, Vice President of Uyghur American Association said the CCP has been committing human rights abuses to suppress the Uyghurs in Xinjiang, such as murder, kidnapping, torture, compulsory sterilization, birth control, and detaining more than 1 million Uyghurs. He said that it does not matter how fluent the Uyghurs speak in Mandarin or how well they get along with the Chinese, as long as their appearances and names are unchanged, they may become the target of the CCP at any time.

A photo of a notice targeting the detained Uyghurs is also included in the information made public by Ghappar. The document stated that those above 12 years old must “repent, surrender, report, and break-off.”

Xinjiang is home to roughly 11 million Uyghurs. Human rights experts say that at least 1 million Uyghurs and other ethnic Muslim minorities have been detained within internment camps, and subjected to torture and political indoctrination in an effort to coerce them into giving up their faith.
