China’s military has initiated a series of military drills, codenamed “Joint Sword-2024A,” around Taiwan, aiming to demonstrate its military capabilities and send a strong message to the island.

The drills are taking place in the Taiwan Strait, the north, south, and east of Taiwan, as well as areas around the Taipei-administered islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin.

The exercises involve live ammunition and multiple strike positions, with the Chinese military deploying its army, navy, air force, and rocket force.

Taiwan has responded by dispatching ground, sea, and air forces to monitor the situation closely.

The drills are seen as a response to recent developments in Taiwan, including the inauguration of a new president.

The United Nations has called for all sides to avoid escalation, while the United States, Taiwan’s strongest ally and military backer, has “strongly” urged China to act with restraint.

China has described the drills as “testing the ability to seize power over the self-ruled island.”
