The Justice Department is demanding that Facebook turn over information from three accounts that could provide access to the personal details of thousands of activists who expressed interest in anti-Trump rallies.
The department obtained search warrants targeting three Facebook accounts that were used to organize Inauguration Day protests against Donald Trump, the ACLU said late Thursday. But accessing those accounts would provide information on thousands of other users who “liked” an anti-Trump Facebook page, the group explained.
The ACLU’s Washington, D.C., office said in a statement it would fight the enforcement of the search warrants.
More than 130,000 people have fled the region around the Mount Agung volcano on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali, fearing it will soon erupt, an official said Thursday.
In the latest sign that China is moving to dramatically limit its exposure to its restive neighbor and long-time economic dependent, Chinese authorities on Thursday ordered all North Korean firms to stop doing business in the world’s second-largest economy, fulfilling Beijing’s obligations according to the latest round of UN Security Council sanctions, which were passed two weeks ago.
The order comes just days after President Donald Trump revealed that the People’s Bank of China had asked the country’s banks to sever their business ties with North Korea.
Specifically, they were ordered to stop providing financial services to North Korean customers and to wind down existing loans, severing one of North Korea’s most reliable connections to the global financial system. It was reported that the banks were warned that continuing to transact with North Korean business could result in embarrassment and economic losses, according to Russia Today.

“The project is in the early stages, and we have just held study meetings with other institutions,” a spokesperson for Japanese bank Mizuho Financial Group told CNBC on Wednesday.
“This will be pegged with Japanese Yen, and hopefully used to make payments and transfers through a mobile phone app,” the bank said.
According to a report by the Financial Times, a consortium of Japanese banks are working on the project, and they are interested in launching the J-Coin before the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
THE PROJECT HAS THE SUPPORT OF THE CENTRAL BANK and Regulators. The J-Coin will allow Japanese consumers to pay for goods and services with their smartphones.
The president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, has urged the national armed forces “be at ready” to defend the country’s sovereignty and people amid threats by US.
“We have been blatantly threatened by the most criminal empire in the history of mankind,” Maduro said, referring to the US.
Boeing is offering $2 million in prizes—including a $1 million top prize—to inventors of “safe, quiet, ultra-compact, near-VTOL personal flying devices capable of flying 20 miles while carrying a single person.” VTOL stands for vertical take-off and landing, meaning that Boeing is looking for something more original than a conventional ultralight airplane. Boeing is correct that there’s potential for technological breakthroughs here, but in the world of aviation, $1 million doesn’t get you very far.
What is this mysterious spiraling glowing object observed over thousands of kilometers in the Russian sky? Some say it looks like the Norway Spiral or Connected to Blue Beam. Russian Officials say it was a rocket.
One thing is for sure, it sure looks wild.
Just in time for the weekend, the Associated Press reported on Friday that the Department of Homeland Security had notified 21 states earlier that day that their election systems had been targeted by malicious cyber actors. The states and DHS quickly jumped to the conclusion that Russia had ordered the cyberattacks, even though it was reported that the identity or identities of the perpetrators were inconclusive Yet, the news spread like wildfire after readers had been primed as reports of possible infiltartion of state election systems had circulated for nearly a year. Even so, for many states, the call Friday from the Department of Homeland Security was the first official confirmation that their election systems had, in fact, been targeted by hackers.
Having raged at President Trump’s “suicide mission” on Saturday, North Korea’s foreign minister Ri Yong Ho called for an impromptu press conference this morning following President Trump’s extended travel ban, in which the diplomat said that Trump’s recent tweet that DPRK’s leadership would not be around much longer amounted to “a declaration of war” and added that North Korea has “every right to take countermeasures against the United States, including to shoot down American jets outside the DPRK’s airspace” as part of its right to self-defense under the United Nations charter.
A new extended travel ban announced by Donald Trump’s administration will restrict travel to the US from North Korea and Venezuela, as well as from Iran, Chad, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia – countries included in previous bans – based on “security or safety threat.”
The new restrictions, which come as a result of a review of previous travel bans challenged in American courts, are set to take effect on October 18.
The war of words between Trump and Kim escalated once again in the late hours on Saturday night, when President Trump sent another belligerent tweet directed at North Korea saying that if the country’s foreign minister was speaking for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in his threatening speech at the United Nations, “they won’t be around much longer.”
The Environmental Protection Agency says it has recovered 517 containers of “unidentified, potentially hazardous material” from highly contaminated toxic waste sites in Texas that flooded last month during Hurricane Harvey.
The agency has not provided details about which Superfund sites the material came from, why the contaminants at issue have not been identified and whether there’s a threat to human health.
The one-sentence disclosure about the 517 containers was made Friday night deep within a media release from the Federal Emergency Management Agency summarizing the government’s response to the devastating storm.

The likelihood that the U.S. will see a catastrophic earthquake within the next 30 years is very high — and it’s not just the West Coast that’s at risk, experts say.
Seismologists have long warned that the U.S. is “overdue” for an earthquake, because a catastrophic one has not occurred in the U.S. since about 1989, when the Loma Prieta earthquake killed at least 63 people in California, said Robert Yeats, a geology professor at Oregon State University. The most destructive earthquake the U.S. has ever seen was the 7.9-magnitude “Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906,” which killed an estimated 3,000 people, according to the agency. As more years have passed without earthquakes, pressure has built up along certain fault lines as tectonic plates try to shift, including in the Pacific Northwest and California, Yeats said.
Earthquakes, which occur when two Earth surfaces move against each other, are typically difficult to predict and impossible to prevent. But the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) maps out high-risk zones based on seismic and geologic data that take into account when and where earthquakes occurred in the past, among other measures that help them predict future events, according to Morgan Moschetti, a USGS research geophysicist. See which areas have the highest potential for an earthquake below.

With roughly 1.5 million Floridians initially without electricity from the damage inflicted on Florida’s energy infrastructure, many in the Sunshine State are now questioning why it’s so difficult for people to utilize solar energy.
The simple answer is that one of the major electrical suppliers in the state – Florida Power and Light (FPL) – has utilized a massive lobbying campaign, directed at state lawmakers, to create legal barriers to disallow people from powering their own homes with solar panels without being subject to power companies.
In fact, current Florida state law makes it illegal.
This is the definition of crony capitalism. Companies lobby government officials, who then vote in favor of the corporate position — often for a quid pro quo in the form of financial support for the officials’ reelection campaign.
Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, is about to emerge off the northwest coast of Puerto Rico after becoming the island’s strongest hurricane landfall since before the Great Depression, continuing to lash the island and the nearby Virgin Islands with destructive winds, flooding rain and storm surge.
A fairly shallow and very powerful earthquake has hit near Mexico City. USGS Has listed it as a 7.1. But they are notorious for downgrading. I will continue to update via twitter with new info!

Hurricane Maria made landfall Monday evening on the island of Dominica as an extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane and now has its sights set on a potentially devastating strike on the already storm-weary Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, parts of which are still recovering from Hurricane Irma less than two weeks ago.
Hurricane Maria is beginning to pound the Leeward Islands as a strong Category 3 and will follow that up with a potentially devastating hit on the already storm-weary Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, parts of which are still recovering from Hurricane Irma less than two weeks ago.

Residents living within one mile of an acid spill at a Baltimore plant are being urged to stay indoors and shelter in place until further notice.
Fire department spokesman Chief Roman Clark said the spill occurred around 10:45 a.m. Monday at the Solvay Industries plant in South Baltimore when crews were transferring chlorosulfonic acid from a tanker to a trailer.
Clark said the spill “created a vapor cloud” that has since dissipated. There were no reported injuries, and only a small part of the plant was evacuated; all other employees were told to shelter in place.
