Depending on how paranoid you are, this research from Stanford and Google will be either terrifying or fascinating. A machine learning agent intended to transform aerial images into street maps and back was found to be cheating by hiding information it would need later in “a nearly imperceptible, high-frequency signal.” Clever girl!

U.S. authorities fired tear gas into Mexico during the first hours of the new year to repel about 150 migrants who tried to breach the border fence in Tijuana.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement later Tuesday that the gas was used to target rock throwers apart from the migrants who were trying to cross.
“No agents witnessed any of the migrants at the fence line, including children, experiencing effects of the chemical agents, which were targeted at the rock throwers further away,” the statement said.
China has completed construction of a secretive project to build a giant antennae five times the size of New York City.
The experimental radio antennae is rumoured to have taken 13 years to finish and will communicate long range with military submarines.
Extremely low frequency radio waves (ELF waves) will be emitted by the machine which will send messages to subs hundreds of metres underwater.
The Wireless Electro-magnetic Method (WEM) project is officially pegged for use on earthquake and mineral detection and but has clear potential applications for the military.
The peak of Anak Krakatau was brought down by more than 200m after the flank collapse that triggered tsunami waves killing more than 420 about 10 days ago. Here some satellite pictures:
They’re the pride of the US fleet: enormous 100,000 tonne, 333m long nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. But Beijing thinks they’re Washington’s achilles heel.
Rear Admiral Lou Yuan has told an audience in Shenzhen that the ongoing disputes over the ownership of the East and South China Seas could be resolved by sinking two US super carriers.
Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) reports Admiral Lou gave a wide-ranging speech on the state of Sino-US relations. The high-profile, hawkish military commentator reportedly declared the current trade spat was “definitely not simply friction over economics and trade,” but was instead a “prime strategic issue”.

Terminal three of Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport was evacuated on Monday after threats by a man with explosives, a special forces branch of the military and airport authorities said.

The end of 2018 seemed to signal good things to come for America’s farmers. Fresh off the passage of the farm bill, which reauthorized agriculture, conservation and safety net programs, the USDA last week announced a second round of direct payments to growers hardest hit by President Donald Trump’s trade war with China.
According to the Department of Agriculture, if this government shutdown stretches into February there won’t be money for food stamps. And it certainly looks like this shutdown could last for quite a while, because President Trump is not backing down on his demand for border wall funding, and the Democrats have pledged not to give him a single penny.
So a few weeks from now, approximately 38 million people could be suddenly cut off from the food stamp program. If that scenario were to unfold, there is no telling what could happen. After just a few days, government workers are already freaking out about having their paychecks delayed.
US President Donald Trump has doubled down on fiery rhetoric aimed at his political opponents, threatening to close the entire southern border of the US if the government shutdown continues.
“We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with,” Trump tweeted in the early hours of Friday morning.

Nine members of the Venezuelan armed forces have been imprisoned for taking part in a plot to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro five years ago, after courts rejected their final appeal.
The military men were sentenced to a minimum of five years in jail for “preparing in 2014 an insurrectional and destabilizing movement, called Operation Jericho, against the government,” according to a statement from the Venezuelan court. Their sentence was handed down after multiple appeals were rejected and dismissed by lower courts and a court-martial.
After years of “benevolent” handouts to various African countries by Beijing, all of which however came in the form of loans, of which few have led to viable, long-term projects and cash-flow generating assets, and led to accusations that China is pursuing a “new colonialism” of the African continent (and more recently, nations along the One Belt, One Road corridor), China is demonstrating to the world what happens when its debtors refuse to pay up.
But first a brief detour: readers will recall that China’s ambitions for Africa are hardly new, and were discussed here over 6 years ago for the first time in “The Beijing Conference”: See How China Quietly Took Over Africa”
President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia would deploy its first regiment of hypersonic nuclear-capable missiles next year, saying the move meant his country now had a new type of strategic weapon.
Putin was speaking after overseeing what the Kremlin said was a pre-deployment test of the new missile system, called Avangard.
“This test, which has just finished, ended with complete success,” Putin told a government meeting.

A surge in earthquakes have been plaguing Sicily after Europe’s highest and most active volcano began spewing lava from a new fracture. Mount Etna’s eruption covered nearby villages in ash and shut down the Catania airport.
Mount Etna marked Christmas celebrations with a spike in seismic activity, causing a new fracture to open up at the base of a southeast crater at around 11 am Monday morning. Soon after, lava flows began pouring out of the crack, eventually sending an ash column spewing eastward into the sky. People on the mountainside were urged to evacuate the area immediately.

A tsunami triggered by a volcano has hit coastlines along the Sunda Strait in western Indonesia, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 160 others, local officials say. The death toll is expected to rise.
It happened late on Saturday when an eruption intensified at Mount Anak Krakatau, which is located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. It’s believed to have caused an underwater landslide, which in turn triggered a tsunami.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency. said at least 20 people were killed and 165 others have been injured. The death toll is expected to rise because some communities have not yet been reached.
“The tsunami was not triggered by an earthquake,” he said. “It’s possible that it was triggered by an underwater landslide due to the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. At the same time there was high tide because of the full moon. So there was a combination of natural phenomena, tsunami and high tide.”

U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis has submitted his resignation, telling President Donald Trump in a letter that their views are not aligned, just a day after Trump’s surprise announcement on U.S. troops in Syria.
Trump said in a tweet on Thursday that Mattis would retire at the end of February, but the secretary’s letter to the president points to a difference in their views as the reason for his departure.
When the stock market is in a correction and careening toward a bear market like it is now, history shows there are certain stocks that get hit the hardest and the least during those tumultuous periods.
