China is about to go where no one has gone before–the farside of the Moon. On the morning of Dec. 8th (Chinese time), a Long March 3B rocket is scheduled to blast off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in Sichuan province, propelling a lander and rover toward the lunar farside. On Dec. 16th, Comet 46P/Wirtanen will approach Earth less than 1.5 million km away–making it one of the 10 closest-approaching comets of the Space Age. Stocks fell sharply on Tuesday in the biggest decline since the October rout as investors worried about a bond-market phenomenon signaling a possible economic slowdown. Lingering worries around U.S.-China trade also added to jitters down Wall Street.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 741 points, or 2.8 percent, and was on pace for its worst day since Oct. 10. At its low of the day, the Dow had fallen more than 800 points. The S&P 500 declined 2.5 percent to trade below its 200-day moving average as the financials sector lagged. The United States Department of Agriculture on Tuesday announced an expanded nationwide beef recall due to new concerns over possible salmonella contamination.
More than 12 million pounds of raw, “non-intact” beef products ― a label that includes ground beef ― are now covered by the recall, which was first issued Oct. 4.
Nearly 250 people in 26 states have fallen ill, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says. The agency fears more contaminated beef may be stored in Americans’ freezers.
Theresa May’s government has been found in contempt of parliament after it refused to comply with a motion passed by MPs demanding that it release the full official legal advice on the prime minister’s Brexit deal.
MPs voted by 311 to 293 to find ministers in contempt. It is the first time any UK government has been found in contempt by its MPs in parliamentary history.
The motion, passed Tuesday evening, did not name any individual minister.

Microsoft is “going to provide the US military with access to the best technology … all the technology we create. Full stop,” Brad Smith, the president of the tech giant, said at the Reagan National Defense Forum, held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.
Smith also sought to explain his decision, saying his company actually wants “Silicon Valley to know just how ethical and honorable a tradition the military has.” He argued that the military should not be left out of global technological progress in the field of artificial intelligence, which is “of importance to everybody and not just young people who happen to live on the West Coast.”
