A power plant explosion has left large areas of Los Angeles without electricity, affecting homes, businesses and even vital infrastructure like traffic lights.
The outages hit more than 140,000 homes and businesses in the San Fernando Valley Saturday, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) confirmed.
“LADWP apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates customers’ patience as we work to restore power as safely and quickly as possible,” the department said.

By resolution 71/258, the General Assembly decided to convene in 2017 a United Nations conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination. The Assembly encouraged all Member States to participate in the Conference and decided that it shall convene in New York, under the rules of procedure of the General Assembly unless otherwise agreed by the Conference, with the participation and contribution of international organizations and civil society representatives. The Conference will be held in New York from 27 to 31 March and from 15 June to 7 July. The Conference held a one-day organizational session in New York on 16 February 2017.
The decision to convene the Conference followed from the recommendation of the open-ended working group on taking forward multilateral disarmament negotiations, convened pursuant to resolution 70/33. The open-ended working group, chaired by Ambassador Thani Thongphakdi (Thailand), specified in its report that a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons would establish general prohibitions and obligations as well as a political commitment to achieve and maintain a nuclear-weapon-free world. The primary mandate of the open-ended working group was to address concrete effective legal measures, legal provisions and norms that would need to be concluded to attain and maintain a world without nuclear weapon
Hackers breached at least a dozen US power plants in attacks in May and June, US media report, citing intelligence officials.
The targets included the Wolf Creek nuclear facility in Kansas, according to several reports.
An urgent Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report indicated a foreign power, possibly Russia, was responsible, the New York Times said.
The DHS document carried the second-highest threat rating, the Times said.
Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp declined to say if the plant was hacked but said there had been “no operational impact” at the plant.

An underground tunnel that archaeologists believe was meant to imitate the underworld has been found under a pyramid at Teotihuacan in Mexico. Electrical scans taken at the ancient city revealed the extent of the mysterious tunnel.
“The finding confirms that Teotihuacans reproduced the same pattern of tunnels associated with their great monuments, whose function had to be the emulation of the underworld,” archaeologist Veronica Ortega, who was involved in the discovery, said in a statement.

Melania Trump is unable to leave her Hamburg accommodation due to G20 protests taking place outside, her spokeswoman confirmed to German media. The demonstrations are keeping the US first lady from attending an event with the spouses of other world leaders.
“We have no security clearance from the police to leave the guesthouse,” spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told German news agency DPA.
