Needle punching is a craft or art technique of looping yarn, floss or ribbon in the format of a pattern through fabric. The looping gives the pattern a rug like appearance. The origins of needle punching are debatable. Some claim it has been in existence since the ancient Egyptians began making needles out of hollow bird bones, others claim needle punching originated from the Old Believers in Russia, while others trace its origins back to Germany or England. Needle punching is used to embroider items, create wall hanging, ornaments, pillows, rugs and other décor and crafts. Needle punching is done as a hobby and commercially. Before creating your own item you will need to know how to needle punch.

Fabric
Fabric made from a blend of 50 percent cotton and 50 percent polyester, especially weaver’s cloth, remains a leading choice for punchneedle projects.
Punch Needle
Punch needles take one of two forms: a handle and tip forming one solid piece or one handle with interchangeable tips of different sizes. In both forms, vendors sell punch needles with three common, easy-to-find tip sizes, which are small, medium, and large. Extra-small tips and rug-size tips are less commonly available and sometimes prove difficult to find.
Needle Threader
Because of their length, punch needles requires a special threader to set up thread through the needle. Most needles are sold with a threader, but these tools are also sold separately to replace those that become misplaced or broken. Threaders for punch needles have a wide handle and a long body that fits through the hollow needle and pulls through the thread.
Floss, Ribbon, and Yarn
No restrictions or limitations exist on the use of various flosses, ribbons, and yarns because using a diverse assortment contributes to the depth and dimension of the finished image. Use any floss, ribbon, or yarn that holds onto its loop form after completing the stitches.
Embroidery Hoop or Frame
The creation of punchneedle stitches requires that the fabric be kept taut. To keep the fabric at a uniform, consistent tension, punchneedle embroiderers use embroidery hoops or frames.
Embroidery Hoop
Embroidery hoops consist of two closely sized rings with the outer ring only marginally larger than the inner ring. Lay the fabric over the small inner ring and place the outer ring over the top of the fabric. Pull the fabric that is outside of the rings until the fabric within the rings achieves uniform tautness and does not contain any wrinkles. Finally, secure the outer ring. The outer hoop may fasten with either a spring or a screw top. If possible, choose an embroidery hoop that features a lip that grips the fabric and increase the hoops ability to hold the project securely in place.
Embroidery Frame
Any frame on which the project can be tacked firmly in place will suffice

Scissors
In addition to cutting pieces of floss, yarn, or ribbon at the end of its use, use scissors to cut the loops through the top.
