Sea squirts are flourishing off the coast of Maine as temperatures in the Gulf of Maine steadily increase. They may sound cute, but they could cause a “giant-sized problem,” University of New Hampshire (UNH) researchers have warned in the past.
The population of the jelly-like marine invertebrate animals — also known as tunicates — has grown rapidly in recent years and they’re starting to wipe out other organisms that are vital to the ocean’s ecosystem.
“They are having a banner year this year. They are out there competing with the seaweeds and [other organisms] on the bottom,” Larry Harris, a zoology professor at UNH, told the Bangor Daily News on Thursday.

An ancient Italian supervolcano that hasn’t erupted in 500 years may be starting a stage of activity that could lead to a colossal eruption, spelling potential disaster for communities lying in its path.

The Woolsey fire that engulfed over 90,000 acres in California last weekend may have spread toxic and radioactive substances from a Superfund site, according to activists who believe authorities might be downplaying the risks.
The fire passed through the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL), a federal Superfund site in the Simi Hills that was the site of the worst nuclear meltdown in US history in 1959. While the California Department of Toxic Substances Control said there was no reason to be concerned of “any risks other than those normally present in a wildfire situation,” locals aren’t so sure, pointing out that the agency has dragged its feet in cleaning up toxic sites and accusing it of a possible cover-up.

The tragic Camp Fire of northern California has killed at least 31 people, destroyed approximately 7000 structures, and basically leveled the retirement community of Paradise, California.
It appears that the fire was initiated by a failing PG&E power line in the Feather River Canyon just to the north of the town of Pulga (see map with arrow below). The time of failure was roughly 6:15 AM November 8th, with fire reported 15 minutes later.
