For 300 Spartans or for refugees? Far-right rally for iconic battle counters pro-migrant event

Hundreds of members of the far-right Golden Dawn party participated in a torch lit rally at the Thermopylae Pass, some 200 kilometres (124 miles) from Athens, on Saturday,to commemorate the Battle of Thermopylae from 480 BC, in which King Leonidas of Sparta allegedly held back thousands of Persians with only 300 Spartans for three days. The crowd of party supporters was seen holding flaming torches and singing the national anthem as s refugee solidarity gathering was being held at a refugee facility close to the narrow coastal area. The battle of Thermopylae was fought between an alliance of South Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas, and the Persian Empire of Xerxes I during the second Persian invasion of Greece. After a three-day standoff all Greek warriors, including 300 Spartans, were killed.
