Thousands gathered to celebrate the annual Kanamara Festival at the Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki on Sunday. Footage shows the giant portable phallic shrines as they are paraded through the streets, as festival attendees purchase and enjoy penis-shaped candies and other trinkets. The festival, which began in 1977, originally drew sex workers who pray for protection against sexually-transmitted diseases. It is also said to offer divine protection for prosperity, marriage and harmony.
