Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told ABC10 that “red tide” is likely causing the deaths. A red tide, formally known as a harmful algal bloom (HAB), occurs when “colonies of algae — simple plants that live in the sea and freshwater — grow out of control while producing toxic or harmful effects on people, fish, shellfish, marine mammals, and birds,” according to the National Ocean Service.
