According to a report released by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), China’s Ministry of Public Security (Chinese police) collected DNA data of China’s male population on a massive scale. The authorities have collected 5% to 10% of China’s male population which is roughly 35 to 70 million people since late 2017.

This targeted approach gathers Y-STR data—the ‘short tandem repeat’ or unique DNA sequences that occur on the male (Y) chromosome. When these samples are linked to multi-generational family trees created by the police, they could link any DNA sample from an unknown male back to a specific family and even an individual.

Liu Xiaobin, a former public security officer in Dalian city recalls being called in a meeting in 2017 to discuss collecting DNA samples, fingerprints, etc. from Chinese citizens. He’s concerned that the Chinese Communist Party will use the data illegally and wrongfully—not only because it violates privacy rights, but also in order to take people’s organs and match them up with a patient needing an organ.

There are also concerns regarding using the data to target a specific group and use bio-weapons against specific groups of people.
