Australian scientists found that honeybee venom kills 100% of aggressive breast cancer cells in under 60 minutes while sparing healthy cells.

Dr. Ciara Duffy’s team at the Harry Perkins Institute and University of Western Australia tested venom from 312 bees in Australia, Ireland, and England. The active component, melittin, destroyed triple-negative and HER2-enriched breast cancer cell membranes within an hour and halted growth signals in 20 minutes.

Bumblebee venom, lacking melittin, had no effect. Synthetic melittin produced similar results, eliminating the need to harm bees. Published in npj Precision Oncology, these early-stage findings await human trials. Source: Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research / npj Precision Oncology (Dr. Ciara Duffy et al.)
