The NIH investigation has investigated 189 scientists for undisclosed foreign ties, with 93 percent of the hidden funding coming from China. Some 77 grantees have been removed from the NIH system as a result of the probe.

The numbers were revealed on June 12 in a presentation by Michael Lauer, the NIH deputy director for extramural research. The NIH’s effort dates back to August 2018, when the organization warned universities across the nation that some foreign entities have been systematically targeting NIH researchers to divert intellectual property and obtain confidential information.

The NIH effort is part of a larger U.S. government campaign to counter the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) infiltration of American academia. The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI have made arrests and reached settlements in several cases involving researchers as part of its broader China Initiative launched in November 2018.

The “610 Office,” one of the Chinese regime’s deadliest and most notorious agencies tasked with clamping down on dissent, exacts enormous influence within the Party and enjoys unchallenged power to persecute religious minorities, an internal document obtained by the Chinese-language Epoch Times shows.

The office, formally known as the Central Leading Group on Preventing and Dealing with Heretical Religions, is an extra-legal Party organization similar to Nazi Germany’s Gestapo, with various names as disguises in public.

It was established by former Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Jiang Zemin on June 10, 1999—hence its name—for the sole purpose of carrying out the persecution of Falun Gong, a spiritual meditation practice that originated in China and has since spread to roughly 90 countries.

The practice became enormously popular—with roughly 100 million adherents in China by 1999, according to official estimates. Threatened by this number, which was greater than the number of Party members, Jiang ordered the brutal suppression of Falun Gong practitioners.

After Beijing passed the National Security law on May 28 that will take away Hong Kong’s freedom, President Donald Trump delivered a speech in response the following day. It shows the White House is finally taking the right approach to China. Trump’s speech covers four areas.

First, the United States is terminating the relationship with WHO. WHO has followed Beijing’s direction in the entire course of the development of the coronavirus, from failing to alert the world of the virus outbreak in Wuhan, to praising the work of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and holding it up as a model, to changing the disease’s name to COVID-19 to eliminate a word related to China, to finally refusing to reform. In terminating the relationship with WHO Trump is sending a strong warning to all the other world organizations the CCP has infiltrated.

Since the United States has contributed more than 10 times what China did, why did WHO follow Beijing? While the United States has contributed to the organization and the work, the CCP focuses on getting the individual organization leaders under its control.

The Russia collusion investigation led by then-Special Counsel Robert Mueller was artificially prolonged in the hope that President Donald Trump would move to terminate it and thus be accused of obstruction of justice, according to former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker.

Whitaker, who led the Department of Justice (DOJ) between Nov. 7, 2018, and Feb. 14, 2019, said that, in his opinion, the Mueller team acted inappropriately to create an “obstruction of justice trap” for Trump and his officials.

Former FBI Director Mueller was appointed by then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in May 2017 to take over an FBI counterintelligence investigation to determine whether the 2016 Trump campaign colluded with Russia to sway the election.

By March 2019, Mueller had wrapped it up, saying the probe was unable to establish that any such collusion took place.

Mueller, however, already knew this in 2018, Whitaker told Jan Jekielek, host of The Epoch Times’ “American Thought Leaders” series.

Soon after taking command at the DOJ, Whitaker was briefed “on the contours and what was the Mueller investigation,” he said.

“There was no evidence of any criminal conspiracy or connection or collusion, whatever you want to call it, between the Trump campaign, members of the Trump campaign—including Donald Trump—and the Russian government. So, therefore, the primary and sole purpose of that investigation had essentially failed to generate any evidence, and it was clear that that had been known for some time.”

Keeping such an investigation open isn’t the “regular order at the Department of Justice,” according to Whitaker. He offered a theory as to why it happened.

The Chinese regime’s latest move to impose a national security law on Hong Kong will lead to the end of the city’s autonomy, say activists and experts. They warn that if Beijing is not stopped, it will only be emboldened to take stronger action to bring the city under its control.

Beijing’s announcement last week that it would pass a national security law for Hong Kong—bypassing the city’s own legislature—has attracted international condemnation and reignited mass protests in the city, with plans for more in the coming weeks.

Following Beijing’s move, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared on May 27 that Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from the mainland, putting Hong Kong’s special trading status with the United States in jeopardy.

It’s unclear whether the U.S. administration will proceed to revoke Hong Kong’s special privileges, which would require an executive order by the president. The state department hasn’t responded to a query from The Epoch Times as of press time.

Critics fear that the law, which bans acts of “secession, subversion, and terrorism activities,” would be used by Beijing to suppress and persecute dissenting voices. Local pro-democracy activists and lawmakers note that national security laws are frequently used to prosecute and jail dissidents in the mainland.

The law also opens up the possibility of Beijing’s security agencies setting up operations in Hong Kong.

If this law is passed, it is the end of the “one country, two systems” promised by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Beijing will set up a national security office in Hong Kong. People can then be arbitrarily arrested and taken to the mainland to be prosecuted in a system with no rule of law. Or, people can be arrested and handled in Hong Kong after the Hong Kong legal system is subverted and turned into a replica of the mainland’s. Hong Kongers suspect military police have already been sent to Hong Kong.

Beijing is taking this action after the mayhem unleashed by the pandemic. More than 122 countries want an investigation into how the CCP virus outbreak happened in China. Why take such a step, knowing it will bring more international condemnation down upon the CCP?

CCP has actually weighed the political and financial risks carefully. In the end, political safety appears more urgent and critical to the party.

Nunes told Fox News on Sunday that Republicans will be making the criminal referrals “in coming weeks,” against unspecified individuals associated with the Trump-Russia probe.

“We’ve also expanded our investigation into the Mueller team and everything that happened with Mueller and the people at DOJ and FBI that were above Mueller,” Nunes told legal analyst Gregg Jarrett.

He said to expect more actions as more information comes out about the circumstances of the launch of the investigation into allegations of a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia to swing the 2016 election.

“And so, we will be making criminal referrals in the coming weeks against the Mueller team. We’re just now putting that together and, of course, as always, waiting on more documents that we really need to come out,” the California congressman added.

Top10VPN, a site that reviews virtual private networks (VPNs) and researches digital rights and security issues, found in a recent report that more than a dozen U.S. tech firms provide “essential web services” required to power the websites of blacklisted Chinese companies.

Last October, the commerce department put 28 Chinese public security bureaus and companies on an economic blacklist over their role in aiding the repression and surveillance of Uyghur Muslims in the northwestern region of Xinjiang. It included some of China’s top artificial intelligence (AI) startups and video surveillance company Hikvision. The designation bars U.S. firms from doing business with those companies without a license from the department.

An estimated more than 1 million Uyghur and other Muslim minorities are detained in internment camps in Xinjiang as part of the regime’s purported fight against “extremism.” Outside the detention centers, the regime’s inhabitants are heavily monitored by a dense network of AI-enhanced surveillance cameras and security checkpoints.

The report said: “Through providing essential web services to these controversial companies, U.S. firms are playing a part in the proliferation of highly invasive surveillance products that have the potential to undermine human rights around the world.”

It said that Google is providing content delivery network and analytics services to Hikvision and data recovery firm Xiamen Meiya Pico Information Co, both on the U.S. blacklist. Amazon, it added, provides web hosting for Hikvision and surveillance equipment maker Zhejiang Dahua Technology.

The report said that Microsoft supplies email hosting for SenseTime and Megvii, two of China’s most valuable AI startups.

The researchers named several other U.S. tech companies that provide website hosting, authentication, and related services, including Digicert, Stackpath, Symantec, Let’s Encrypt, Entrust, and GeoTrust.

Facebook and Twitter were also identified as providing content delivery network services for Hikvision.

By all accounts, Obama and top officials discussed phone calls between Flynn and then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during a White House meeting in the final days of the Obama administration.

But the details about the conversation—including who brought up Flynn and when—differ from account to account, suggesting there is more to learn about what transpired at the Oval Office.
Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates said she first learned about the Flynn–Kislyak calls during the Jan. 5 meeting, according to a recently declassified summary (pdf) of Yates’s interview with special counsel Robert Mueller.

According to Yates, after the president was briefed about the Intelligence Community Assessment on Russian meddling in the 2016 election, Obama dismissed everyone present except for Yates and FBI Director James Comey.

Obama then told Yates and Comey that he learned about the Flynn–Kislyak calls and the fact that the two men discussed sanctions.

Comey’s account of what transpired differs. In his recently declassified testimony (pdf) to the House Intelligence Committee, Comey said that Obama brought up the Flynn topic sometime during the Jan. 5 meeting. But didn’t mention whether the conversation occurred before or after Obama dismissed the rest of the officials from the Oval Office.

According to Comey’s account, Obama brought up Flynn.

But according to a recently declassified email by then-national security adviser Susan Rice, Yates and Comey weren’t the only people in the room with Obama after the rest of the officials were dismissed.
Rice wrote that she and Vice President Joe Biden were present as well, contradicting the version of the events put forth by Yates.

Rice’s email also contradicts Comey’s account, stating that Comey, not Obama, was the one to bring up Flynn’s calls with the Russian ambassador.

Rice’s email had previously been released, but a portion pertaining to the conversation about Flynn remained redacted until May 19. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence approved the declassification after a request by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).

The previously public portions of the email, which Rice sent to herself after the meeting, showed that Obama advised the senior officials present about being “mindful to ascertain if there is any reason that we cannot share information fully as it pertains to Russia.”

The newly declassified portion of the email shows that Comey responded to that instruction by pointing out that he is concerned about the frequency of communications between Flynn and Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

“From a national security perspective, Comey said he does have some concerns that incoming NSA Flynn is speaking frequently with Russian ambassador Kislyak. Comey said that could be an issue as it relates to sharing sensitive information. President Obama asked if Comey is saying that the NSC should not pass sensitive information related to Russia to Flynn. Comey replied ‘potentially.’ He added that he has no indication thus far that Flynn has passed classified information to Kislyak, but he noted that ‘the level of communication is unusual,’” Rice wrote.

The apparent effort to limit what can be shared with the incoming administration suggests that the Obama administration may have sought to conceal the existence of the investigation into the Trump campaign from the incoming Trump cabinet. The effort is potentially problematic because Trump was not under investigation at the time and the FBI was ready to close Flynn’s case the day prior to the meeting before the bureau’s upper echelon intervened to keep it open.

Then-Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates told then-special counsel Robert Mueller that she first learned about the Flynn-Kislyak calls from Obama himself during the same meeting at the White House on Jan. 5. Yates, who was Comey’s superior at the time, was so surprised by what she was hearing, she said she had trouble processing it “and listening to the conversation at the same time.”
The Justice Department released the special counsel interview of Yates alongside a batch of documents as part of its motion to dismiss the charges against Flynn. The documents substantially validate the theory that Flynn was set up by the FBI.

The judge in Flynn’s case did not rule on the motion to dismiss the charges and instead appointed a third-party to argue the case against dismissal.

This comes as Obama and Biden are facing increasing scrutiny from Republican lawmakers for potential misconduct during the FBI’s 2016 counterintelligence investigation into Trump campaign’s alleged ties with Russia.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly alleged, without naming specific crimes, that Obama and certain members of his administration were involved in a scheme to target Trump’s former national security adviser Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and other associates of the president during 2016 and 2017.

The president revived his accusations in his hashtag “Obamagate” after a number of revelations in recent weeks. Documents released earlier this month indicated that Obama was aware of details from phone calls made by Flynn with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Meanwhile, a declassified list of Obama administration officials who requested the unmasking of Flynn in intelligence reports, which was recently given to Congress, revealed that Biden and Obama’s then-chief of staff Denis McDonough were involved in the requests.

The pandemic’s disruption of global supply chains has hastened an administration initiative to reduce manufacturing dependence on China. Meanwhile, a raft of other measures across U.S. government agencies combating security and other threats posed by the regime are also coming to the fore.

President Donald Trump has taken a “whole-of-America approach” to tackling the challenge of the Chinese Communist Party, state department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus told The Epoch Times in a recent interview.

“This pandemic has highlighted just how correct, I think, President Trump has been since he began campaigning for the office in 2015 about the need to protect our borders, to bring crucial manufacturing home, and … importantly for America, to have reciprocal relationships around the world, to have an even playing field,” Ortagus said.

“And that’s what we’re calling for in our relationship with China—whether it’s in trade, or whether it’s working on this pandemic, or national security issues.”

The president and senior administration officials have stepped up their criticism of the regime’s coverup of the virus outbreak, while the administration conducts an investigation into the virus’s origins. The president has said that tariffs would be “the ultimate punishment” for Beijing, although White House officials have indicated they are not considering punitive measures against the regime.

“I declassified the enclosed document, which I am providing to you for your situational awareness,” Grenell wrote in his note to Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).

The document was sent to senators in response to their request to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to provide Congress with information regarding the “unmasking” of U.S. citizens by Obama administration officials during the time of the 2016 election through to January 2017. The senators have since released the list.
The note, signed by Grenell, was first obtained by CBS News’ Catherine Herridge on Wednesday.

Grassley and Johnson made the request in a letter (pdf) to Attorney General William Barr and acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell on Tuesday following the revelation that Grenell had declassified information about Obama administration officials who were allegedly involved in the “unmasking” of Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, whose communication with the former Russian ambassador during President Donald Trump’s transition period was leaked.

Sen. Rand Paul, who also requested the declassified information, has also released the list separately. He said that he would be inviting Grenell to testify in the Senate next week.

The list contains names of recipients who may have received Flynn’s identity in response to a request processed between Nov. 8, 2016, and Jan. 31, 2017, to unmask an identity that had been generically referred to in a National Security Agency foreign intelligence report.

The Justice Department on May 6 declassified portions of the Aug. 2, 2017, memo by then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in response to a request from Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

Portions of the memo had already been made public in 2018 as part of the special counsel’s prosecution of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. The details revealed in 2018 showed that Rosenstein tasked the special counsel with investigating the allegations that were within the scope of the FBI’s Trump campaign probe at the time of Mueller’s appointment on May 17, 2017.

The new details beneath the previously blacked-out portions of the memo show that the FBI was still investigating allegations against Trump campaign associate Carter Page in May 2017, which were part of the infamous Steele dossier. At the time, the bureau had already been aware for months that the dossier was likely tainted with Russian disinformation, and had also already learned that Page was a source for the CIA and had briefed the agency about his contacts with Russians.

While some of the news coverage of the newly declassified details appears to fault Rosenstein for tasking Mueller with investigating the claims from the shoddy dossier, the memo makes it clear the listed allegations were part of the FBI probe that the special counsel was taking over. The integrity of the investigation would likely have been questioned if Rosenstein had acted to limit the scope.
