High-Level Emergency Alert At North Carolina Power Plant After Floodwaters Inundate Lake

Duke Energy activated a high-level emergency alert at a retired coal-fired power plant in North Carolina as floodwaters from the nearby Cape Fear River overtopped an earthen dike at the facility and inundated a large lake, raising concerns of a potential breach.
The dam containing Sutton Lake appeared stable and Duke officials were monitoring it with helicopters and drones, Duke spokeswoman Paige Sheehan said Thursday, adding that it was “an evolving situation.”

Company employees notified state regulators overnight that the 1,100-acre (445-hectare) lake at the L.V. Sutton Power Station near Wilmington was at the highest level of alert under its emergency action plan.

‘Deep Creep’ Discovery Near California’s Deadliest Fault Lines Could Explain Mystery Earthquakes

The discovery of unusual behavior deep beneath the surface near California’s deadliest faults has shed new light on seismic activity in the area and could explain nearby enigmatic earthquakes.
New research published in Geophysical Research Letters suggests that the strange deformation of some very small earthquakes in California’s San Bernardino basin near the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults may be due to a “deep creep” 10km below the Earth’s surface.

Steel Workers Gear Up for Strike, Potentially Derailing Trump’s Steel Resurgence

President Donald Trump’s U.S. steel resurgence might be thwarted as more workers go on strike.

About 15,000 workers at plants owned by ArcelorMittal voted on Tuesday to go on strike as contract disputes drag on, USW International said.

“The flexibility of our contracts and world-class efficiency and productivity of this particular group of steelworkers enabled ArcelorMittal to survive floods of unfairly traded and illegally dumped foreign imports that brought about the harshest market conditions our industry has faced in decades,” said Leo Gerard, president at USW International, in a statement.

FEMA To Send First Presidential Emergency Alert Test Out On October 3rd

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will next month test a new “presidential alert” system that will allow the president to send a message to every phone in the US.

The alert is the first nationwide test of the presidential alert test, FEMA said in an advisory, which allows the president to address the nation in the event of a national emergency.

Using the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system, anyone with cell service should receive the message to their phone.

“THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed,” the message will read.

Minutes later, the Emergency Alert System (EAS) will broadcast a similar test message over television, radio, and wireline video services.

The alert was due to be sent out on Thursday at 2:18pm ET, but will now run on October 3, FEMA said in a tweet.

Jack Ma Warns US-China Trade War “Could Last For 20 Years”

This is not what the market wants to hear right now.

Hours after China’s Foreign Ministry said it would unveil its retaliation to the impending 10% US tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods “at an appropriate time” – a “measured” response that, because it wasn’t “the worst scenario that some analysts had expected”, helped push global markets higher, China’s wealthiest – and recently retired – man warned that the US-China trade spat is far from over.

Alibaba founder – who surprised the market earlier this month when he announced his resignation as CEO – Jack Ma said that what we’re seeing now is merely the beginning of a conflict for global economic dominance that could persist “for 20 years” even after the US administration that instigated it has been consigned to the history books, Bloomberg reports.

Ma issued the “grave warning” during a speech at an Alibaba investor day conference in Hangzhou on Tuesday, where he portrayed the trade conflict as an intractable problem that won’t easily be resolved now that the US has set the conflict in motion.

China Retaliates: Beijing To Levy $60BN In Tariffs On US Goods Effective Sept 24

Just as Donald Trump was further threats aimed at Beijing after he launched another $200BN in tariffs targeting Chinese imports, and warning that “there will be great and fast economic retaliation against China if our farmers, ranchers and/or industrial workers are targeted!”, China’s Ministry of Finance issued a statement disclosing that it would retaliate by levying tariffs on another $60BN in US goods (effectively covering all US imports with tariffs), which would take effect from Sept. 24 at 12:01 p.m.

While the retaliation was expected, in what appears to be an olive branch to Trump, Beijing said that it would impose a 10% tariff rate on goods that it previously listed at a 25% rate, and a 5% rate for goods that previously were seen as being in the 10% rate bucket.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is being tight-lipped about an “unusual event” which occurred at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant last Saturday which forced a “hot shutdown” of both the plant’s Generation IV-type reactors 1 and 2.

The NRC classified the emergency as an “unusual event” but provided little to no details on the situation.

Additionally, the NRC reports that weather conditions from Tropical Storm Florence are currently preventing workers from accessing the plant.

They Just Ran A Simulation of a CAT 4 Hitting The Middle East Coast

Just months ago, disaster planners simulated a Category 4 hurricane strike alarmingly similar to the real-word scenario now unfolding on a dangerously vulnerable stretch of the East Coast.

A fictional “Hurricane Cora” barreled into southeast Virginia and up the Chesapeake Bay to strike Washington, D.C., in the narrative created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Argonne National Laboratory.

The result was catastrophic damage, which has some experts concerned that Hurricane Florence could produce a disaster comparable to 2005’s Hurricane Katrina and in a part of the country that is famously difficult to evacuate.

The simulated hurricane knocked out power for most gas stations in the Mid-Atlantic region, damaged a nuclear power plant and sent debris into major shipping channels, among other problems, according to a Department of Energy simulation manual.

FEMA Issues Dire Warning Ahead Of Hurricane Florence

“This storm will and has the potential to cause loss of life, and we cannot emphasize the importance to take action now,” said Byard.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the storm was increasing in size and at about 370 miles south-southwest of Bermuda and moving west-northwest at 17 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The first outer rain bands from Florence could move into the Outer Banks of the Carolinas and southeast Virginia on Wednesday night, said FEMA’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration liaison Steve Goldstein.

Hurricane-force winds could extend inland into central North Carolina and central Virginia later in the day on Thursday and a large area of tropical storm-force winds were expected to last until Friday, he added.
