Emergency crews are responding to a large gas line explosion in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Video footage from the scene shows huge flames from miles away.

Florence Targets North, South Carolina Regions, Could Swell to CAT 4 Before Landfall

The outer edge of the 5-day uncertainty cone for Tropical Storm Florence is now over North Carolina and South Carolina, as the dangerous storm heads toward the Southeast U.S. coast. Though just a tropical storm with 65 mph winds as of 11 am Saturday, Florence is beginning to re-organize over warm ocean waters, and is expected to re-intensify into a dangerous Category 4 hurricane by Tuesday. Florence is likely to be very close to the Southeast U.S. East Coast by Thursday, bringing dangerous impacts.

Heads Up! British Airways Website Hacked for Info On 380k People

British Airways was forced to apologize on Friday after the credit card details of hundreds of thousands of its customers were stolen over a two-week period in the worst ever attack on its website and app.

The airline discovered on Wednesday that bookings made between Aug. 21 and Sept. 5 had been infiltrated in a “very sophisticated, malicious criminal” attack, BA Chairman and Chief Executive Alex Cruz said. It immediately contacted customers when the extent of the breach became clear.

JUPITER HAS AN EXTRA MAGNETIC POLE: When NASA’s Juno spacecraft reached Jupiter in 2016, planetary scientists were eager to learn more about the giant planet’s magnetic field. Juno would fly over both of Jupiter’s poles, skimming just 4000 km above the cloudtops for measurements at point-blank range. Today in the journal Nature, a team of researchers led by Kimberly Moore of Harvard University announced new results from Juno–and they are weird. Among the findings: Jupiter has an extra magnetic pole.

FEMA & FCC Will Conduct Nationwide EAS/WEA Test On September 20th

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on September 20, 2018. The WEA portion of the test commences at 2:18 p.m. EDT, and the EAS portion follows at 2:20 p.m. EDT. The test will assess the operational readiness of the infrastructure for distribution of a national message and determine whether improvements are needed.

Whats Going On? More Passengers Fall Ill, This Time On Flights to Philadelphia Out of Europe

Passengers and crew on two flights arriving in Philadelphia from Europe on Thursday were screened by medical teams after 12 people aboard became ill with flu-like symptoms, a day after a similar outbreak on a flight from Dubai to New York.

All 250 people on separate American Airlines (AAL.O) flights from Munich and Paris were “held for a medical review” as a precaution, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was notified, Philadelphia International Airport spokeswoman Diane Gerace said.

Major M8.1 Earthquake Hits Fiji Region

A major earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.1 has struck just off the coast of Fiji, but it struck far below the seabed, seismologists say. No tsunami warning has been issued.

The earthquake, which struck at 3:49 a.m. local time on Friday, was centered about 41 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Levuka. It struck at a depth of 669 kilometers (415 miles), making it a very deep earthquake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center puts the preliminary magnitude at 8.1.

“Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat because the earthquake is located too deep inside the Earth,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Strong M6.7 Earthquake Hits Japan, Landslide Crushes Homes

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 has struck northern Japan, centered near the cities of Tomakomai and Sapporo, seismologists say. There are reports of injuries.

The earthquake, which struck at about 3:08 a.m. local time on Thursday, was centered on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. It struck at a shallow depth of 31 kilometers (19 miles).

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.7, causing strong shaking in the surrounding area. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) put the preliminary magnitude at 6.6.

Japan’s disaster management agency FDMA said at least two homes had collapsed in Sapporo and a fire broke out at a petrochemical plant in Muroran City. One person in Tomakomai suffered cardiac arrest.

The National Hurricane Center has upgraded Florence to a hurricane, the third so far this season in the Atlantic Basin. The storm is located more than 1200 miles east of the Lesser Antilles in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Wind speeds have increased this morning to 75 mph, prompting the upgrade to hurricane status.

Deadly Superbug Colonizing Hospitals Across The Planet

Doctors are warning of a potentially fatal and “formidable” pathogen which has spread to hospitals across the globe and is resistant to all known antibiotics.
A team of researchers from the University of Melbourne in Australia discovered three multidrug-resistant strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis which emerged in recent decades and spread globally. The team studied samples from 78 medical institutions across 10 countries, releasing their findings in the journal Nature Microbiology on Monday.

“Often it just colonises the skin,” researcher Ben Howden said as cited by ABC News Australia. “It doesn’t necessarily lead to infection. But in a smaller number of people it can lead to a serious, invasive infection requiring complex treatment.”

In August 2018, Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu announced that more than three hundred thousand personnel of Eastern and Central Military District would engage in the country’s largest ever military exercise, Vostok 2018. Supposedly, the five-day exercise (September 11–15) will involve a thousand aircraft, nine hundred tanks, all major Russian airborne units, and ships from the Pacific and Northern Fleets, making it “unprecedented in terms of geographic scope and the strength of command and control centers and forces due to participate.”

Mysterious Square Aircraft Seen In North Carolina

Another alleged UFO sighting near Charlotte has appeared on Facebook and in this case, it was posted by a husband and father who says he doesn’t necessarily believe in UFOs.

Javion Hill, 35, of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, says he took several photos of the object during a storm on the night of Aug. 18, as he drove on U.S. 74 southwest of Charlotte.

The images feature something square hovering above the treeline, with its edges fringed in lights. Hill told the Charlotte Observer the craft frightened him to the point that he didn’t sleep that night.

“I was on my way home with my wife on the speakerphone, and it looked like there was a tornado coming, so I was trying to take a picture of the clouds for my wife,” says Hill.

Google’s New AI Can Predict Earthquake Aftershocks

Researchers that study earthquakes have been trying to model earthquake aftershocks for many years, and now, Google’s new AI can do it for them. Thanks to the new neural network, researchers can fairly precisely predict earthquake aftershocks, as well as scale how strong they would be. Nevertheless, there needs to be much more research done before the algorithm reaches perfection.

Rapid development of artificial intelligence has allowed scientists to use it for various things, like the World Cup predictions or planet exploration. However, Google and a Harvard team collaborated to focus AI toward something that is extremely difficult to be predicted by humans – earthquake aftershocks.

Power Plant Explosion In Venezuela Illuminates Night Sky, Leaves Thousand In The Dark

An explosion at an electrical substation in Maracaibo, Venezuela, has showered streets with sparks and caused further blasts, plunging much of the city into darkness.
The initial blast occurred at approximately 1:36 am local time on Friday at the Las Tarabas electrical substation, reports Caraota Digital. Eyewitness videos show the initial explosions illuminating the entire night sky as awe-struck onlookers cry out in dismay.

Modernized Chinese Navy Is Ready to Challenge U.S. Navy In Pacific

In April, on the 69th anniversary of the founding of China’s Navy, the country’s first domestically built aircraft carrier stirred from its berth in the port city of Dalian on the Bohai Sea, tethered to tugboats for a test of its seaworthiness.

“China’s first homegrown aircraft carrier just moved a bit, and the United States, Japan and India squirmed,” a military news website crowed, referring to the three nations China views as its main rivals.

Not long ago, such boasts would have been dismissed as the bravado of a second-string military. No longer.

A modernization program focused on naval and missile forces has shifted the balance of power in the Pacific in ways the United States and its allies are only beginning to digest.
