Scientists have come up with the first water map of the moon. Researchers have found that water exists nearly everywhere on the lunar surface and not just in the Polar Regions as previously thought.
This research could come extremely useful for future moon explorations as scientists say we can already start thinking about possible methods that would allow us to extract the precious mineral, either as drinking water for future astronauts on the moon or as a necessary element to produce fuel.
The new research was published in the Journal Science Advances and builds on the discovery made in 2009 when experts detected water and a related molecule called hydroxyl, which is composed of one atom of both hydrogen and oxygen – in the lunar soil.
With the help of NASA’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper, which flew aboard India’s Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, scientists were able to calculate how much water was present on the surface of the moon.
Speaking about the discovery, lead author, Dr. Shuai Li, who performed the work while a Ph.D. student at Brown University and is now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hawaii said:
“The water signature is present nearly everywhere on the lunar surface, not limited to the Polar Regions as previously reported. We have discovered that the amount of water increases toward the lunar poles and does not show significant difference among distinct compositional terrains.”
Scientists say that water concentration reaches a maximum average ranging between 500 to 750 parts per million in higher lunar latitudes.
While this isn’t much—its in fact less than what’s found in the sands of Earth’s driest deserts—however, its still enough, and much more than previously calculated.

Tired of tapping on the screen of your pesky, high-end smartphone to browse the Internet? No fear, because the awkwardly named “Brainternet” is here! A team of researchers at Wits University in Johannesburg have come out of seemingly nowhere and directly connected a human brain to the Internet for the very first time.
Connecting the human brain to a basic computer isn’t that easy. When the likes of Elon Musk and the US military’s secretive science wing are having difficulties with this type of augmentative technology, it seems a bit surprising that another research institute with considerably less funding has managed it. So what exactly have they done?
According to a press release, the team of neuroscientists and engineers have used an electroencephalogram (EEG) – a device that detects electrical signals in the brain – to transmit neurological activity to a cheap Raspberry Pi computer. This then live streams the data to a program running on a website that anyone can view at any time.
So, it’s not quite what you may have been imagining. It’s essentially a technical window into someone’s neural activity that’s open access. To be fair though, this is a world first, and the motives behind the project are honorable.
“Ultimately, we’re aiming to enable interactivity between the user and their brain so that the user can provide a stimulus and see the response,” project coordinator Adam Pantanowitz, a lecturer in the Wits School of Electrical and Information Engineering, said in a statement. Although researchers observing EEG readings do this already, this effectively allows more people, including the subject themselves, to see what’s happening up in their head.
There’s more. Pantanowitz adds that “Brainternet can be further improved to classify recordings through a smart phone app that will provide data for a machine-learning algorithm,” which means that “in the future, there could be information transferred in both directions – inputs and outputs to the brain,” says Pantanowitz.

James Pennebaker, author of Writing to Heal, understands the benefits that writing can have on our emotional health, and how expressive writing specifically can actually build a better immune system. In 1555 in France, Nostradamus began to write a series of mysterious verses, full of strange ideas. Now it is claimed that these were astonishing predictions of future events on Earth.

Nostradamus would stare into a bowl filled with water and while observing the liquid, he would “receive” visions of the future. This is how he foresaw many future events that were proven to be accurate.

I empathize with the position so many are in about the disbelief in UFO’s and aliens. Why? Because I’ve been a believer, experiencer and researcher for most of my life and through the process of exploration, which is also my life’s work, I’ve had a chance to witness the sheer blind denial of a subject that has more evidence to support it than the evidence that exists for most things people believe today; like for example black holes or even the pharmaceutical drugs people take daily. It’s not clear how life started on Earth, although we do have some solid leads. It’s certain that with a little heat and some rather simple and common chemicals, amino acids – a vital cornerstone of biology – can quickly form. With this in mind, the most probable crucible for DNA and simple bacteria-like lifeforms are deep-sea hydrothermal vents, where today microbes thrive without sunlight.
A new Geoscience Frontiers study has come out of the blue to challenge this popular hypothesis. According to its Japanese co-authors, a natural nuclear reactor kickstarted life on Earth. This may sound a little outlandish, but it’s actually one of the most plausible ideas to date – and one that could explain alien life elsewhere in the Solar System too.
Shortly after the Earth formed 4.5 billion years ago, it began to cool, but still remained a genuinely hellish landscape. The oceans were an age away from taking shape – water mostly remained as a superheated gaseous vapor for several hundred million years – and asteroids and comets pummeled the surface. This was appropriately named the Hadean Eon.
Back then, though, the Earth had far more uranium-235 than it does now. This decays, which releases radiation and heat at a rather constant tick.
This heat is not insubstantial. It has a huge influence on alien worlds and moons like Pluto and potentially Saturn’s Enceladus, both of which have cryovolcanic features. On Earth, around half of the heat that goes into generating volcanism and the movement of tectonic plates comes from radioactive decay.
During the Hadean, this plentiful supply of U-235 meant that it was “cooking” the basic carbon, potassium, and nitrogen-based constituents of Earth’s primitive volcanic atmosphere. In fact, the radiation given off by these isotopes was the perfect type to promote chemical chain reactions, the sort that lead to the formation of amino acids, RNA and DNA.
According to the research team from the Riken and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, this heat source would have fueled geysers rich in organic chemistry – the type that you also get in deep-sea hydrothermal vents.
The advantage of a nuclear-powered geyser though is that the temperature of the water column never reaches boiling point. In many cases, long-chain organic compounds break down in water that greatly exceeds this temperature, which makes hydrothermal vents a touch-and-go place for early, fragile life to develop.
So how did the researchers work this out? Essentially, they came up with a mathematic model that looked at the best available evidence.
One piece of evidence they referred to were the famous Miller-Urey experiments. Conducted from 1952 onwards, these two pioneering researchers added several gases that were found in the early Earth’s atmosphere – water, methane, ammonia and hydrogen.
Adding a spark to simulate lightning strikes, they found that amino acids spontaneously appeared. In 2007, after Miller died, the original vials were examined and found to contain more amino acid types than have ever been detected in natural conditions.
This new study notes that the energy of these “lightning strikes” is identical to that of their proposed U-235 nuclear reactor, at least at the peripheries – and unlike lightning, which is fairly sterilizing, radiation provides a slow burn heat source.
There’s more to the model than this, but the premise is undoubtedly solid. Radiation in the minds of most is thought of as a life-killer, but it’s rather remarkable to think that it may have started life in the first place.
Of course, if this model is correct, then astrobiologists may look to the icy geysers and seas of other worlds, and wonder if the same story of life played out there.

In the hopes of communicating with any aliens out there, scientists will send messages to potentially-habitable planets next year.
Rather than waiting for extra terrestrials to contact Earth, experts have decided to pre-emptively send signals into space.
But not everyone is convinced by the plan, with experts including Professor Stephen Hawking, warning that if aliens discovered Earth, it could ‘end life on Earth’.
San Francisco-based non-profit organization METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) International plans to start sending signals into space for extra terrestrials starting in 2018.
Douglas Vakoch, president of METI, said: ‘If we want to start an exchange over the course of many generations, we want to learn and share information.’
Mr Vakoch spoke of the need to send more complex signals out into the universe last year in an interview with Forbes.

A mysterious fanged sea creature that washed up on a beach in Texas following Hurricane Harvey has been identified.
Preeti Desai found the decaying fish on a beach in Texas City, and asked Twitter for help.
She posted several photos with the caption: “Okay, biology twitter, what the heck is this?”
Her request was passed to biologist and eel specialist Dr Kenneth Tighe, who believes it is a fangtooth snake-eel.
He said it may also be a garden or conger eel, because “all three of these species occur off Texas and have large fang-like teeth”.
It is thought that Hurricane Harvey, which brought strong winds and flooding to Texas, could explain why the creature was washed up.
The fangtooth snake-eel, also known as a “tusky” eel, is usually found in waters between 30 and 90 metres deep in the western Atlantic ocean.
Ms Desai, who was at the beach assessing the damage from the hurricane, told the BBC: “It was completely unexpected, it’s not something that you’d typically see on a beach. I thought it could be something from the deep sea that might have washed on to shore.”
“My main reaction was curiosity, to figure out what the heck it was,” she added.
Ms Desai said she posted the images on Twitter because she knows a lot of scientists use it, and a friend soon responded and contacted Dr Tighe.
“I follow a lot of scientists and researchers. There’s such a great community of these folks that are very helpful, especially when it comes to answering questions about the world or identifying animals and plants,” she said.
She said she left the eel on the beach “to let nature take its course”.

The Giants of Mont’e Prama are sculptures between two and two and a half meters in height believed to have been created by the Nuragic civilization, an ancient culture that inhabited the island of Sardinia between the XVIII and II century AD.
Interestingly, NO written records of this civilization have been discovered apart from a few possible short epigraphic documents belonging to the last stages of the Nuragic civilization.
Researchers have not yet agreed upon whether the Nuragic culture originated from the island itself or are perhaps related to the mysterious Sea Peoples, which ravaged the Mediterranean coast between the fourteenth and thirteenth centuries BC.
In the latter case, they would have arrived in Sardinia after being defeated in their failed invasion of Egypt between the thirteenth and twelfth century BC.
The Giants or Colossi, as some scholars have called them, were found in 1974 near the town of Cabras, west of the island. They represent warriors, archers, and fighters with shields.
But one of their most outstanding features, besides their extremely large size, are the eyes formed by two concentric discs.
Experts are unsure whether the massive statues are a representation of mythological heroes or gods. Some of the massive statues were found next to ancient tombs, reason why experts believe the statues may have been arranged around it as guardians.
But experts cannot say for sure as to what the statues really were. They may well have belonged to a nearby temple not yet found.
In March of 2015, after 40 years of study and restoration, the Giants were presented to the public at the National Archaeological Museum in Cagliari and the Goat Museum.
In total, with the more than five thousand ancient pieces found, 33 Giants have been successfully rebuilt. Two new pieces were found in September 2016, with the particularity that they are complete and intact.

According to a group of scientists, at least nine known exoplanets are in an ideal position to witness Earth transit in front of the Sun, making our planet visible to possible extraterrestrial astronomers.

This is the conclusion of a curious study that scientists from the Queen’s University of Belfast and the Max Planck Institute have published in the Monthly Notices magazine of the Royal Astronomical Society.
Thanks to astronomical facilities and missions like SuperWASP and Kepler, we have now discovered thousands of planets orbiting stars other than our Sun, and precisely on some of those exoplanets advanced alien civilizations may have developed throughout the centuries, capable of searching for worlds other than theirs with life.
The vast majority of the exoplanets are located when they cross in front of their host stars in what is known as “transits”, which allow astronomers to see the light of the host star dim slightly at regular intervals each time the exoplanet passes between us, the observer, and the distant star.
In the newly published study, the authors reverse the concept and ask: “How would an alien observer see our solar system and Earth?”
To answer this question, they identified parts of the distant sky from which various planets of our solar system would pass in front of the Sun – the so-called “transit zones” – concluding that the inner planets of our solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) are more likely to be found than the more distant “Jovian” planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), despite their much larger size.
“Larger planets would naturally block out more light as they pass in front of their star,” commented lead author Robert Wells, a PhD student at Queen’s University Belfast. “However the more important factor is actually how close the planet is to its parent star – since the inner planets of our solar system are much closer to the Sun than the gas giants, they’ll be more likely to be seen in transit.”
In order to search for worlds where civilizations would have the best chance to detect our Solar System, astronomers scanned parts of the sky from which more than one planet could be seen passing in front of our Sun.

The declassified CIA documents show that in 1955 an American espionage informant claimed to have met with Adolf Hitler in Colombia and as evidence provided pictures of himself with the Fuehrer more than a decade after his alleged suicide.
It seems that a back of recently declassified CIA documents seem to confirm the authenticity of some FBI files regarding Adolf Hitler which claim that the Nazi leader escaped safely from Germany after the fall of the Nazi empire, and fled to South America.
The set of documents indicates how in 1955, the Western Hemisphere Division of the Central Intelligence Agency received a secret paper titled “Operational: Adolf Hitler,” from the acting CIA station chief in Venezuela. The documented pointed out that one of his sources received a tip that Hitler was alive and well in Argentina.
This, however, wasn’t the first time such claims were made. The CIA tips only seemed to authentic conclusions drawn for earlier FBI documents that also claimed a number of ‘top-secret sources’ said Hitler was alive and well in South America.
Phillip Citroen, a former SS trooper who alleged he was in communication with Hitler, claims the ‘führer’ moved from Colombia to Argentina sometime in January of 1955.
The declassified CIA documents suggest Citroen had photographed himself with Adolf Hitler—and the image was included in the CIA memo. Hitler is supposedly on the right of the image.
The CIA document states:
“CIEMLOY—A Friend stated that during the latter part of September 1955, a Phillip CITROEN, former German SS trooper stated to him confidentially that Afold Hitler was still alive. Citroen claimed tho had contacted Hitler once a month in Colombia in his trip from Maracaibo to that country as an employee of the NKSM Shipping Company in Maracaibo. Citroen dedicated to CIEMLODY—a friend that he took an image of Hitler not too long ago, but did not show the photograph. He also stated that Hitler left Colombia for Argentina around January of 1955. Citroen commented that in as much as ten years have passed since the end of the World War II; the allies could no longer prosecute Hitler as a criminal of war.”

New research has revealed fascinating details about Aboriginal Australians and Pacific Islanders, who according to experts, carry genetic material of an unknown human species.
The new research suggests people from Papua New Guinea and northeast Australia have traces of DNA belonging to an unidentified, extinct human species.
Apparently, there is still much that geneticists and scientists do not understand about this crucial moment in human history, and it seems that research on the subject is raising more questions than answers.
In 2016, researchers at Harvard Medical School published the findings of a comprehensive study of the human genome of all areas of the world and discovered something astounding about the Australian aboriginal population.
They appear to have genetic markers that indicate they are descendants of a yet unidentified human species.
“We’re missing a population, or we’re misunderstanding something about the relationships,” Ryan Bohlender, a statistical geneticist at the University of Texas, told Tina Hesman Saey at Science News.
Bohlender and his colleagues have been researching the amount of extinct hominid DNA that modern humans still carry today. To the surprise of many, they say they’ve found discrepancies in previous studies that suggest our mingling with Neanderthals and Denisovans isn’t the entire evolutionary story.
It’s believed that between 100,000 and 60,000 years ago, our ancestors migrated out of Africa, making contact with other hominid species inhabiting the Eurasian landmass. Experts believe that this contact left a mark on our species that is still present today.
“Our main goal is to understand how our race got to the point where it is, but in order to do that, we must first study the DNA of the ancient tribes,” explained Mallick Swapan, leading scientist of the study, and an expert who has been studying the origins of the human genome for most of his career.
He explained that the new study gathered the genetic data of 142 different human populations scattered around the world that was underrepresented in large-scale studies so far.
According to Swapan, the most incredible revelation of this new study is that the genetic code of the Australian aborigines shows that they carry the DNA markers that indicate the ancient crossbred with an unknown “human” species.
Although it was initially suspected that unusual DNA markers might indicate that Aboriginal ancestors interbred with the elusive ancient species known as Denisovans, this hypothesis turned out to be incorrect.
After the analysis, scientists discovered that DNA markers were distinct from Denisovan markers, leading them to the conclusion that they had found traces of an entirely new form of ancient human species.
It is known that the native peoples of Australia are descendants of the first people who came to the continent from Africa about 50,000 years ago.
It has been assumed that aborigines were isolated from the rest of the world for thousands of years and therefore scientists thought that their genetic code would be relatively homogeneous.
Surprisingly, this turned out not to be the case.
“The genetic signatures of an Australian Aboriginal from eastern Australia and western Australia are as different as those of a person from Europe and an Asian person,” Swapan said.
The incredible diversity in the genetic code of the native peoples of Australia, in addition to the peculiar genetic marker that indicates that they interbred with an unknown human species in the past, indicates that there is still much more to discover about the ancient history of humanity.

Ten members of an uncontacted Amazonian tribe have been slaughtered by gold miners in Brazil, government workers believe.
Funai, the agency responsible for protecting the tribes, says the men were collecting eggs along the Amazon river when they came across the miners and were killed.
The miners then went to a bar in a town along the Colombian border where they bragged about the massacre and showed off a carved paddle which they claim was taken from the men.
Agency workers say they miners boasted about cutting up the tribesmen’s bodies and throwing them into the river, though later claimed ‘it was kill or be killed’.
Funai has now lodged an official complaint to the government over the issue, the New York Times reports, prompting authorities to open an investigation.

Pope Francis has been caught on camera attempting to steer his flock away from Jesus Christ, warning that “having a personal relationship with Jesus is dangerous and very harmful“.
Breaking with centuries of Christian tradition, Pope Francis told a crowd of 33,000 Catholics in Rome that “a personal, direct, immediate relationship with Jesus Christ” must be avoided at all costs.
The speech took place on June 25.
