The Trump administration dialed up its response to threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and formally rejected nearly all of Beijing’s major territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement: “Beijing’s claims to offshore resources across most of the South China Sea are completely unlawful, as is its campaign of bullying to control them.”

China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan have competing claims in the South China Sea. Beijing’s claims are the largest, covering almost all of the waterway.

Pompeo said, “Beijing uses intimidation to undermine the sovereign rights of Southeast Asian coastal states in the South China Sea, bully them out of offshore resources, assert unilateral dominion, and replace international law with ‘might makes right.’”

Pompeo also said, “The world will not allow Beijing to treat the South China Sea as its maritime empire. We stand with the international community in defense of freedom of the seas and respect for sovereignty and reject any push to impose ‘might makes right’ in the South China Sea or the wider region.

According to a business survey released on July 13, compared to a month ago, more companies are now thinking of moving out of Hong Kong as a result of Beijing’s newly-implemented National Security Law.

The National Security Law criminalizes individuals for any acts of subversion, secession, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The law could impose a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

More than half (51%) said the implementation of the law made them feel less safe living and working in Hong Kong, while only 26% said the law made them feel safer.

Disastrous floods in southern China are severe, affecting nearly 34 million people, and at least 27 provinces and cities. Some residents were critical saying that several reservoirs were opened simultaneously at midnight without the public’s knowledge. In addition, the Fenghuang (Phoenix) ancient town in Hunan Province was hit by heavy rain at the end of June. While residents were busy rebuilding after the flood, the CCP’s state-run media reported that the river in the ancient town was surrounded by mist and looked like a fairyland.

On July 12, Chinese Chairman Xi Jinping admitted that “the flood control situation is very serious.” In She County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province, many rivers’ water levels have risen, and have been flooding villages, bridges, urban areas, and crops. Economic losses are difficult to estimate.

On July 10, a tea manufacturer owner in She County, Anhui Province, couldn’t help crying after all 3,000 tons of tea leaves were soaked in water. Mr. Wu said that this owner suffered a lot of losses, but there were many other victims who were not reported.

Mr. Wu said that seeking compensation from the government won’t work if only one or two people speak out. People need to all speak up.

The CCP mouthpiece media Chinanew.com viewed it differently regarding the disastrous floods. The report said that on July 1, the Tuojiang River in the Phoenix ancient town was covered with mist, as if it were covered with a white gauze. The video showed that lots of tourists were on the bridge, taking photos in the thin water mist, and there were pedestrians on the arch bridge, as if they were in a “fairyland.” However, looking at the video uploaded by a netizen on July 11, the arch bridge was still flooded at both ends, and pedestrians cannot pass over it at all.

Poyang Lake, Dongting Lake and Honghu Lake are the three largest freshwater lakes connected to the Yangtze River in the middle reach of the river basin.

Whenever flooding of the Yangtze River becomes a serious problem, Chinese authorities tend to sacrifice rural areas and townships dotted around these lakes. In other words, floodwaters would be diverted into these towns and villages, in an effort to save heavily populated metropolitan areas along the Yangtze River, such as Wuhan, Nanjing, and Shanghai.

On July 14, local authorities ordered residents near Poyang Lake and Honghu Lake to evacuate immediately as water could be released from reservoirs and lakes at any time.

“To Freedom” is the first political book, Hong Kong publisher Raymond Yeung has taken on. After Beijing introduced the National Security Law, the book’s original printer bailed, and two other printers declined, he said.

Another printer agreed to take it anonymously, but wants to get a better sense of how the law is implemented first.

Just as demand for political books was surging in Hong Kong after a year of protests, Hong Kong’s once unbridled and prolific independent publishers are now censoring themselves in the face of the new law.

Hong Kong authorities say freedom of speech remains intact, but in the past two weeks public libraries have taken some books off the shelves, shops have removed protest-related decorations and the slogan “Liberate Hong Kong! Revolution of our times” has been declared illegal.

Jimmy Pang, a veteran local publisher, said 2020 is “the most terrifying year” because of the security law and the economic downturn that was already hurting publishers.

Pang is also a spokesman for 50 exhibitors that plan to participate in this year’s annual Hong Kong Book Fair. Originally planned for this week, the fair normally draws some needed revenue for publishers, but was delayed at last minute until further notice due to the recent spike in coronavirus cases around the territory.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council, which organizes the fair, has told exhibitors not to display what it called “unlawful books,” but did not explain further.

Days after the United States punished CCP officials linked to the persecution of Muslim minorities in China, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) announced sanctions against four American officials and a U.S. entity on July 13.

Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Sam Brownback, and the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China, have all been sanctioned for their public opposition of the CCP’s treatments and persecution of Uyghurs.

Last week the U.S. announced sanctions against Chen Quanguo, the Party secretary of the Xinjiang region; Zhu Hailun, a former deputy Party secretary of the region; Wang Mingshan, director of the Xinjiang Public Security Bureau; Huo Liujun, former Party secretary of the bureau; and the bureau itself.

Brownback praised that move, saying it served as “accountability a long time coming.” The sanctions show the Trump administration “will protect religious freedom at all costs,” he said.

On July 13, China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters that affairs in Xinjiang are “purely China’s internal affairs, the United States has no right or grounds to interfere.”

In order to take the control of students’ minds, the Chinese Communist Party has started to clean out all the “illegal” and “inadequate” books from primary and high school libraries. More than 100,000 books have been removed and many have even been burned. Scholars have pointed out that this is similar to the burning of books during the Cultural Revolution.

Reuters reported that the Ministry of Education called on schools to carry out an “inspection and cleaning program” of books on October 15, 2019. At least 30 provinces have “cleaned” their libraries and removed hundreds of thousands of offending books. Some were even burned.

After the cleaning, schools were directed by the Ministry of Education to place new books such as “Communist Manifesto and the New Era,” ”The Poems of Mao Zedong,” and “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” the influential 19th-century abolitionist novel of slavery in America.

Recently, the Ministry of Education of China has also demanded that, starting from the new school year in September, primary and secondary schools are required to adopt the revised teaching materials, especially textbooks on ideology and politics, language and history, and to “strictly comply with the enforcement” of the law. The revised teaching materials significantly increased the number of works reflecting the so-called “revolutionary tradition and spirit of the Chinese Communist Party” to praise the so-called “great achievements” of Chinese Communist leaders and revolutionary heroes.

Wu Zuo-Lai, a Chinese scholar residing in the United States, believes that what the CCP is trying to control people’s minds so that they are afraid to read, purchase, publish, research, give lectures, or teach content that it doesn’t like and then form an ideology. This ideology will result in the following generations unable to see historical truth, diversity of thoughts, points of view, and ideas. This will lead China to be the next North Korea.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro says he expects President Donald Trump will take “strong action” against China’s largest messaging app WeChat, owned by Tencent, and TikTok, owned by ByteDance. These two apps have attracted heightened scrutiny due to surveillance and censorship concerns.

Navarro didn’t elaborate on whether the president was considering a U.S. ban on the Chinese-owned apps, although he said the president wouldn’t rule it out.

Navarro’s comments come after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last week that the Trump administration is considering banning Chinese social media apps, including TikTok, which is among the fastest-growing digital platforms in history.

When Navarro was asked if Americans should download the app, he replied: “Only if you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.”

Chinese virologist Yan Limeng, who secretly fled to the United States from Hong Kong in April, revealed that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) worked together to conceal evidence of the potential spread of the the novel coronavirus among humans when the outbreak first emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.

Yan was a researcher in virology and immunology at the University of Hong Kong’s school of public health. Fearing that her life may be in danger, Yan fled to the United States on April 28. She made a public appearance on July 10 during a Fox News interview and claimed that the Chinese regime had known about the human-to-human transmission of the CCP virus in late December. She said that the WHO and the CCP have worked together to cover up the truth.

Yan was one of the first scientists in the world to study the new coronavirus, and that her laboratory, which specializes in influenza viruses and pandemics, is a reference laboratory for the WHO. She said that her supervisor secretly asked her to investigate the situation in mainland China.
Yan revealed that she had been researching a SARS-like virus variant spreading out from mainland China since late December 2019.
However, the Chinese regime refused to allow foreign experts to investigate, including those from Hong Kong.

Yan said that while she was en route to the United States, her family members were harassed by Chinese national security officers in their hometown. Since then, she has been attacked and ridiculed by Chinese authorities online.

Yan has repeatedly said that her coming forward, to tell the truth, has nothing to do with politics, as human lives are at stake. She said the CCP virus is extremely dangerous as the infection rate is high, and a vaccine has not yet been developed because scientists don’t understand the virus.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered Huawei equipment to be purged completely from Britain’s 5G network by 2027. The seven-year lag will please British telecoms operators such as BT, Vodafone, and Three, which had feared they would be forced to spend billions of pounds to rip out Huawei equipment much faster.

From the end of the year, it will be illegal for operators to buy any 5G equipment from Huawei, Britain’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Oliver Dowden told parliament.

Sun Qian, a Chinese Canadian who practices Falun Gong, has been illegally detained by the Chinese Communist Party. Recently, she was sentenced to 8 years in prison by Beijing’s Chaoyang People’s Court. This case has been highly publicized. Sun’s former defense lawyer, Xie Yan-Yi, indicated that the trial is a total violation of the legal process and the result is illegal and invalid. In addition, an insider revealed that Sun’s mother has reported the illegal activities of several of the CCP’s agencies.

An insider who is quite informed about the case revealed to NTD that Sun Qian’s mother wrote letters to the Beijing Chaoyang People’s Court, pointing out that Sun’s case is a false accusation as a result of Public Security officials colluding with criminal gangs with the intention to embezzle foreign assets. The insider said that Sun’s mother, Li Yun-Xiu, questioned the related authorities in the letter: “Sun follows Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance, and is a good person. What law did she break? Who is the victim? Is the victim dead or hurt? If the Public Security Bureau cannot provide relative evidence to these questions, how can the judge make such a verdict? Besides, Article 300 of the Criminal Law addresses cults and according to the Law of China, it does not apply to Falun Gong. All Falun Gong books and documents are legal in China. Sun Qian should have many rights listed in the Constitution.”

When Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, visited China in December 2017, he mentioned Sun’s case to Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang. Deputy Prime Minister of Canada Chrystia Freeland, many government official leaders, Miss World of Canada Anastasia Lin, and Canadian citizens have all been calling out the CCP to release Sun Qian.

Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Irwin Cotler, said that the previous abuse and torture suffered by Sun Qian was brutal.

Today no one knows the torture she suffered in solitary confinement or how many threats she was subjected to. The sentencing of Sun Qian is an attempt by the Chinese Communist Party to convict an innocent person, not because of anything she has done, but simply because of her belief in truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.

Liu Li-Peng who worked at Sina Weibo and at Leshi Internet Information and Technology Corp., fled to the U.S. from China this year.

In recent interviews with The Epoch Times and NTD, he exposed the Chinese Communist Party’s increasingly severe censorship, information control, and manipulation of public opinion that is being exported overseas to threaten freedom of speech in free societies.

Liu said that the Chinese Communist Party recruits staff within the system, from universities, colleges and high schools and all kinds of prisoners to form a group of internet commentators, commonly known as “Wumao (fifty cents)” to carry out the CCP’s operational orders and control public opinion.

Liu estimated that there are about 1 million to 2 million review editors belonging to Chinese private departments, the size is comparable to internet commentators. And the most sensitive words that the CCP fears are “June 4th” and “Falun Gong”. Liu said that as the CCP tightens the control of speech, internet censorship gets worse and worse, controlling public opinion and suppressing ideology. He said: “The CCP just keeps erasing people’s memories, the memory of the internet, and the ability of the internet to remember, and then keeps distorting the truth.”

Liu now cherishes freedom of speech after he arrived in the U.S.

Liu Li-Peng is disgusted with the CCP’s censorship. He collected many censorship orders and related documents and has offered them to the Committee to Protect Journalists and Canadian Citizen Lab for research.

FBI director Christopher Wray called out the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for using different tactics in stealing U.S. technology and trade secrets during his speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C. He warned that the United States will hold China accountable for its malign activities.

Wray spent nearly an hour detailing the CCP’s infiltration tactics. He said that the FBI opens a new China-related counterintelligence case every 10 hours. And of the current 5,000 open cases, the CCP alone accounts for nearly half of them. The number of cases of economic espionage linked to the Chinese regime has increased by 1,300% in the last 10 years, Wray said. Now, the CCP is even targeting U.S. medical, pharmaceutical, and academic institutions in an attempt to steal COVID-19 research.

Experts support the FBI’s claims.

The U.S. Department of Justice launched the China Action Plan in November 2018 to address national security threats from the CCP, including theft of U.S. trade secrets, intellectual property, hacking, and economic espionage activities.

The Thousand Talents recruitment plan, which aims to attract top experts around the world to work on projects in China, has drawn scrutiny from U.S. officials, who say it facilitates the transfer of sensitive American technology and know-how to China.

Wray warned that the United States will no longer tolerate the CCP’s repeated attempts in stealing intellectual property.

Soon after the Chinese regime implemented its national security law in Hong Kong, it opened a national security office in the city. The office has sweeping power with immunity from local jurisdiction. Article 43 of the new law gives the police unprecedented power to carry out the so-called national security activities. Experts believe that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is imposing its authoritarian model in Hong Kong to preserve its one-party rule and stability.

Article 43 of the national security law grants Hong Kong police seven unprecedented special powers to carry out security measures. Some of these special powers include:

– Search private properties without a warrant
– Require internet service providers to provide user data and to remove messages from their platforms that are deemed offensive or “endanger” the law
– Freeze assets and confiscate properties of those accused of violating or “endangering” the law
– Require foreign and Taiwanese political organizations and agents to provide information on activities concerning Hong Kong

A netizen said that there are only 7.5 million residents in Hong Kong, so why is it that as soon as the security law is introduced, all those who can walk or climb want to move out and run away?
Another netizen said that Hong Kong will not be the same if all of its people left the city, leaving behind corruption, abuse of power, and illegal laws.

Commentators believe that the CCP maintains its political power by instigating fear among the people.

The Trump administration plans to finalize regulations this week that will bar the U.S. government from buying goods or services from any company that uses products from five Chinese companies including Huawei, Hikvision and Dahua, a U.S. official told Reuters exclusively.

This is likely to have sweeping effects since any U.S. company that wants to sell high-tech devices to the U.S. government must certify that none of the components come from Huawei, Hikvision, Dahua, Hytera and ZTE. That could impact the sale of surveillance equipment, cameras, two-way radios and various mobile devices including smartphones.

Many of these Chinese tech firms were already on U.S. blacklist list–barring them from buying any components from U.S. companies without White House permission.

Huawei did not respond to a request for comment. None of the other Chinese companies targeted could be reached.

The ban is set to go into effect on August 13th.
