On July 6, the UK government announced sanctions against human rights abusers, including visa bans and assets freezes. It was the first time since leaving the European Union in January that Britain imposed its own sanctions for human-rights violations.
Dominic Raab, the U.K. Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, introduced the long awaited sanctions on human rights violators involved in extra-judicial killings, including political assassinations, torture, degrading treatment, forced labor, and servitude.
In violation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, the CCP passed the Hong Kong Security Law, which has allowed the international community to see the true nature of the CCP⁠—prompting countries to reposition their bilateral relations with China.

Joshua Wong, Ivan Lam, and Agnes Chow, former members of the pro-democratic organization Demosistō, were charged with illegal assembly because of their participation in the anti-extradition bill demonstrations last year.

The three defendants were released on bail and will return to court on August 5. Joshua Wong and Ivan Lam have denied all accusations. Agnes Chow decided to plead guilty considering her lack of a criminal record and the possibility she will be given a different sentence. With other protesters facing more critical difficulties, she urged everyone to not give up their beliefs in freedom and democracy whether they plead guilty or not.

Wong indicated that the National Security Law doesn’t target a small group of people; it affects the daily life of Hong Kong people. It will bring about more censorship in libraries, schools, and all types of governmental services.

While mainland China is still suffering from the CCP virus and the African swine flu, a suspected case of bubonic plague was reported in Bayannur city, Inner Mongolia on July 5. According to residents, the local authorities do not have any measures to control the plague.
The local government previously reported that the bubonic plague has the risk of being spread via human-to-human transmission.
Starting on July 5, Bayannur entered a “level 3” alert for plague prevention and will continue until the end of 2020.
The Epoch Times obtained internal government documents from Inner Mongolia, dated March and April of this year. One document revealed that “since the first outbreak on March 15, 21 sites in four leagues (a local jurisdiction) or municipalities in the region have reported an outbreak of the plague” among the local rodent populations. There are 12 leagues and municipalities in Inner Mongolia, meaning a third have reported an outbreak.
The plague was known as the “Black Death” in Europe and killed more than 50 million people in Europe in the 14th century.

A heavy storm dropped more than three inches of rain in Shanghai on July 6. As the water level of the Yangtze River has risen rapidly in the past week, the city’s drainage system was unable to discharge water efficiently. An international group of think tanks from 39 countries has signed a letter on July 3 supporting the people of Hong Kong, and condemning the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for imposing the draconian security law on the city.
The letter was signed by member organizations of the Economic Freedom of the World Network, which is led by Canada’s Fraser Institute.
On June 30, China’s rubber stamp legislature, the National People’s Congress (NPC), passed the Hong Kong security law, which is in direct violation of the “one nation, two systems” principle. It criminalizes individuals for any acts of subversion, secession, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces, with maximum penalties of life imprisonment.
The CCP will also establish a security bureau that would instruct and supervise the city government over the law’s implementation. Individuals who reside outside Hong Kong and who violate the security law would also be subject to prosecution.
The CCP has been attempting to strip away Hong Kong’s freedom and undermining the “one country, two systems” principle.
The open letter calls for a “”global response”” to the CCP’s threats. ”

Massive floods have affected China for nearly 2 months since mid-May. Tens of millions of people in 26 provinces and cities across the country have been affected. According to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), however, another round of heavy rainfall is expected to hit the southwestern part of the country, as well as the middle and lower sections of the Yangtze River.

Alarming flooding has been observed in 16 rivers, including the Changjiang and Le’an Rivers in Jiangxi, and the Shuiyang River in Anhui.

A flash flood in Zhangjiajie, Hunan province, was reported to have swept away students. It can be seen in the video posted by netizens that floods hit the back wall of the elementary school building, causing damage to classroom doors, windows, and playground fences. Parents, teachers, and children were all crying out in the muddy playground, looking for other missing children.

A landslide in Huanggang city buried nine people, among them a 3-year-old child, early on July 8 in China’s Hubei Province, amid some of the heaviest floodings the country has seen in decades.

Rescuers recovered five bodies, while an injured survivor, an 81-year-old woman, has been hospitalized, according to Chinese state media. Local authorities evacuated more than 40 villagers from the area while the search continued for those still believed buried in the debris.

A local villager who was among the evacuees expressed concern that those who are missing may not survive.

Swarms of grasshoppers invaded farmlands in Ningyuan and Quanzhou counties in China. This is the first time these areas have been hit by grasshoppers, with crops being severely destroyed. The local government did not provide any relief, and only sprayed one round of pesticides—which was not enough to stop the grasshoppers.

As of now, several towns in Quanzhou County have experienced the grasshopper plague, with Shaoshuizhen being the worst hit. The grasshoppers crawled all over residential yards, leaving residents unable to open their doors and windows.

A panic-stricken woman received bad news over the phone that she had become infected with the CCP virus. The video shows the woman panicking inside a Beijing shopping mall after having lunch at a restaurant.

The mall immediately closed for disinfection and all customers had to leave the premises. In addition, all staff members who were inside the mall from morning till noon had to take a nucleic acid test.

A local resident told the Chinese-language Epoch Times that this shopping mall is very popular and is located in a high traffic area. He believes that anyone who had contact with this woman would be identified as “high-risk individuals” by the barcode system.

The video of the incident quickly went viral on Chinese social media.

Nearly 14 million people have been affected by floodwaters caused by continuous torrential rain that ravaged 26 Chinese provinces. The flood devastated different areas throughout China and forced many people to abandon their homes.

In the Changping District of Beijing, property owners at Wayao Villa prepared bricks and fire extinguishers, and gathered at the villa’s entrance at 1 a.m. on June 29. They were trying to defend their homes against the armed police and the demolition team, who usually assault the villa during the early morning hours to forcibly tear down their homes.

Chinese authorities have recently been targeting these types of houses by labeling them as illegal construction. Under this accusation, property owners won’t get any compensation if they lose their homes to forced demolition.

Chinese netizens praised the residents for their bravery, and pointed out this is probably the first Hong Kong-style protest taking place in mainland China.

“Villagers at Hedong village of Liuzhou city, Guangxi Province, elected a representative, Zhang Chunming, to help them sue local officials for secretly selling their land. However, on June 29, local police kidnapped Zhang after they intercepted him on the road, and placed him in detention.
Police smashed Zhang’s car windows and forcibly took him away. They also confiscated the legal evidence for the lawsuit which Zhang kept inside his car.
Zhang used his cellphone to record the whole incident while being assaulted by the police.
He called out for help in the video. Afterward, hundreds of outraged villagers rushed to the police station to demand his release.”
