Many Wuhan residents contracted the CCP virus because they visited the hospital for medical care of other illnesses, not knowing about the outbreak and the severity of human transmission.
Ms. Yang’s daughter visited the doctor on January 16. On the 19th, she developed a fever and died 18 days later. Ms. Yang went to the local government to redress the injustice.
Consequently, she was locked in her apartment. Her cell phone line was cut off and so was her connection to the outside world. The Epoch Times received the recording of her visit at the local government office.

Chinese human rights lawyers and their families have been under tight control during the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) two sessions. Among them is Xu Yan, the wife of Beijing lawyer Yu Wensheng who was arrested in 2018 and hasn’t been heard of since. Xu Yan has been monitored since before the two sessions and spoke about her situation in a May 22 interview with NTD.
Xu said, “A national security officer in Shijingshan, Beijing, called her on May 15 and told me to come downstairs and meet with them. When I refused to cooperate, they berated her on the phone. Then, on May 18 and19, she found that someone followed her when she went out. Since May 20, they have been on monitoring duty outside the apartment building.”
“I don’t know how long they are going to monitor me,” Xu said.
“I went out yesterday, and was followed by them. They didn’t stop me from going out, but I don’t know what will happen today. There were many times when they wouldn’t even let me go out. They were on duty downstairs this morning,” she added.
Xu asked for people in the international community to pay more attention to her situation as well as to her husband’s case. “There is still no information about Yu Wensheng’s case. He has been unlawfully detained for a long time without trial, which seriously violates the law and is very inhumane,” she said.
She also called on the CCP to immediately issue a verdict according to the law, acquitting and releasing her husband as soon as possible.
Yu Wensheng was arrested by Beijing police in January 2018 for representing Falun Gong practitioners and “709” lawyer Wang Quanzhang. Since then, his family, friends and even lawyers haven’t been able to see him.
In April of 2018, Yu Wensheng was arrested by the Jiangsu police for “inciting subversion of state power.” His case was handled in secret last May, and no judgment has been pronounced so far.
During these past two years, Xu has been summoned, interrogated, detained and abused by the police many times for her public activism calling for her husband’s release. She has met with many foreign ambassadors in China who told her they would continue to pay attention to his case.

Zhang Pancheng, a young man who recorded a video to publicly criticize the CCP’s one-party dictatorship, was released from prison on May 20.
Talking to the Chinese-language Epoch Times about Zhang’s incarceration, Beijing-based human rights advocate Li Bohong revealed that prison guards had his blood drawn dozens of times without asking for his permission or explaining the necessity of the tests.
Zhang said he was imprisoned together with another young man, Qi Yiyuan, who was arrested for speaking negatively about the CCP.
In November 2018, Zhang had broadcast a live video of Qi protesting at the entrance of Zhongnanhai. Qi was wearing black with the characters “Defend freedom of speech, free human rights lawyers, restore lawyers’ qualifications” printed on the front, and “Oppose Xi’s ban on free commenting and his act in opposition to right principles, oppose the CCP’s one-party dictatorship” printed on the back.
Before they were arrested by the authorities, Zhang managed to share the video on WeChat. On April 4, 2020, a CCP court sentenced Qi to 2 years and Zhang to 1.5 years in prison for the crime of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.”
During a prison visit, Qi told his lawyer Liang Xiaojun that he had shown his support for an Falun Gong prisoner of conscience who was on hunger strike. He said he had joined the Falun Gong practitioner to shout: “Falun Dafa is Good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is Good.”
Another human rights advocate Chen Hongwang had been told by the detention center that Zhang would be released at 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. on May 20. He had planned to join Li and the Zhang family in receiving the young man upon his release from prison.
But Chen ended up being grounded at home by local authorities as police acted to limit travel around the capital ahead of the CCP’s “Two Sessions” annual meeting.
“Once the meeting started, (people’s movements) were all controlled. People either get grounded at home, or get forced to travel.”
Around 7 a.m. on May 20, Zhang’s family arrived at the detention center in Beijing’s Xicheng District with Li to await Zhang’s release. It was not until 10 a.m. that they saw Zhang come running out of the detention center, escorted by more than ten men.
Li said that Zhang had become thin and pale after likely malnourishment in prison.
“He said that when he was in prison, his blood was drawn plenty of times.
He said it was around dozens of times,” Li said.
“His health condition, from what I can tell, he is lacking nutrition.
The skin color is pale and yellow, that’s a sign of being physically weak.
His mental state is still vibrant, probably supported by his spiritual strength.”
When asked whether he knew anything about Qi’s situation, Li said he had not been able to visit the young man. But “I have heard that Liang Xiaojun can visit Qi, because he is his lawyer,” he added.
Qi Yiyuan was born in 1991 in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, and had studied in Australia for two years. Zhang Pancheng was born in 1995 and grew up as a left-behind child in rural Gansu Province. He once worked as a security guard at Peking University.

A parent was furious when he learned that his child, a second grade student, was taught at school to listen and place trust in the Chinese Communist Party and not to trust their parents. In a WeChat group where teachers and parents regularly communicate and share information, he questioned the teacher as to why students were taught to disbelieve parents.
WeChat voice message:
I actually don’t want to discuss this in the group chat, but I have to speak out. Tell me, how do you expect young kids to discern right from wrong by themselves? You told every student in class, “Do not trust your parents. You enjoy free education at school, which means, the Chinese Communist Party raises you up. It is the Party that provides free education. Therefore, when you are at home, do not trust your parents 100%.”
Will my kid still listen to me if you teach him this way? Does it mean that what my parents taught us was all fake?
Every day I ask my son what he learned in school. He would tell me what the teachers said in class.
Now you told all these kids that “it is the Party that provided funds for you to receive education. When your parents say they are raising you, it is not true.” Actually, you should have told them, your parents are taxpayers, and the Chinese government uses the tax money to give you free education. If you put it this way, I have no problem accepting it. However, you are telling the kids that they should not feel grateful towards their parents, which is very wrong.
You are basically saying that the Chinese government used the money out of their own pocket to provide free education to students, and therefore it is the Party that raised these children, not the parents. You are telling these kids that they should not always trust their parents, and they do not need to feel thankful towards their parents.
In addition, when you talked about how Lei Feng died, you said that Lei Feng was trying to save a truck that ran into problems. As he could not find a rock to stop the wheel, he used his human body to stop it. Lei Feng died, but he saved those people inside the truck and he saved the truck, a public property.
Aren’t you teaching these kids to give up their own lives so casually, and even to use human bodies to block a wheel?
I always tell my kid that your life is most precious. When there is a fire, run away as fast as you can. Human lives are more precious than any material things.
Conclusion/Explanation:
Lei Feng was a communist soldier and legend in China who became famous after he died in 1962 at the age of 22. He was touted by state propaganda as a selfless and zealous person devoted to the Communist Party, to Mao Zedong and the people of China. Some stories about him were fabricated lies but were taught in Chinese schools generation after generation.
Brainwashing propaganda has become a lot worse since the onset of the pandemic as the Chinese authorities have tightened control on public opinions. A Wuhan resident recently told the Epoch Times that in her daughter’s middle school, students are encouraged to report on their teachers to higher authorities if a teacher has made comments in class to criticize the Chinese regime.

The Senate passed the Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act on May 20, dropping a bomb on the Chinese stock market. The lawmakers who initiated the bill expressed hope that it would help prevent Chinese companies from committing fraud in the United States.
The Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act, sponsored by Republican Senator John Kennedy and Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen, was passed by unanimous consent on May 21. According to the Act, securities of a company are prohibited from being listed on any of the U.S. securities exchanges if the company has failed to comply with the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board’s (PCAOB) audits for three years in a row. Specifically, the bill requires a company to prove it’s not owned or controlled by a foreign government if the PCAOB is unable to audit specified reports because the company uses a foreign accounting firm not subject to inspection by the board.
John Kennedy, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, tweeted on May 20 that: “It’s asinine we’re giving Chinese companies the chance to exploit hard working Americans because we don’t insist on examining their books. I hope the House sends this bill to POTUS to protect Americans and their savings.”
Kennedy’s tweet on Tuesday stated: “The Chinese Communist Party cheats, and the Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act would stop them from cheating on U.S. stock exchanges. We can’t let foreign threats to Americans’ retirement funds take root in our exchanges.”
Kennedy said in a statement: “There are plenty of markets all over the world open to cheaters, but America can’t afford to be one of them.”
On May 20, Chinese technology stocks fell on the news, with Alibaba closing down more than 2% and Baidu down 1.12%. The credit history of China Concepts Stocks hasn’t been good. Chinese companies listed in the U.S., such as Luckin Coffee, also face increased scrutiny. The Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act still needs to be passed by the House of Representatives and signed by President Trump to become law.

On May 24th, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed that The West has tolerated the CCP’s authoritarian regime for too long, and the virus is making countries better understand the nature of the CCP. He also spoke out against the Australian state of Victoria’s plan to sign the “Belt and Road Initiative” with the CCP, which he said could “present real risks.”
On May 24th, Outsiders, a TV program that airs on Australian Sky News, interviewed Pompeo. He once again criticized the CCP, particularly for fully demonstrating its authoritarian nature during the pandemic.
hU.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo: “Those are the things I think the world could see. It saw that the [CCP’s] reflex is to cover up, to hide, not to protect and secure and keep safe. Those are the kind of things that authoritarian regimes do by nature.”
Pompeo expressed that the West has tolerated the CCP for too long, and that countries around the world are beginning to wake up to the nature of the CCP as a result of the outbreak.
U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo: “My comments the other day reflected what has been decades of western tolerance of behaviors that we don’t accept from any place else, and the nature of the CCP, now I think has become clearer as a result of this coronavirus.”
Moreover, in response to Victoria’s plan to sign the “Belt and Road” project with the CCP, Pompeo said the price of a country’s participation could be to make concessions to the the CCP, and that to ensure the security of the Five Eyes Alliance intelligence network, the U.S. “will simply disconnect” with Australia if there are perceived security problems.
U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo: “Nearly each one of them has some cost to it. There’s often money loaned at concessional rates, or cond itions placed in the debt documents, or government concessions that have to be made to the CCP in order to get those ‘Belt and Road’ initiative projects built. Those present real risks to the people in that region, real risk to the country, and frankly, they built up the capacity of the CCP to do harm.”
At the end of his interview, Pompeo emphasized that the CCP’s act of blaming other countries for the origin of the virus was not only to deflect international attention, but also to make the Chinese people continuously “subservient to the CCP itself.”

The Trump administration is closing a loophole that allows Huawei to get around U.S. trade restrictions and get its hands on advanced U.S. technology.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is threatening retaliation after Washington closed a loophole—one that allowed Huawei to sidestep U.S. export controls and buy semiconductors from global chipmakers.
Last year, the Trump administration placed restrictions on U.S. companies selling to Huawei. The president didn’t want sensitive and advanced U.S. technology powering the Chinese military, which Huawei is linked to. But the telecom giant found a way around the rule.
Instead of buying directly from U.S. companies, it would buy from overseas manufacturers licensed to use U.S. technology in their chips. That won’t be so easy anymore. All global chipmakers will need to obtain a U.S. license before selling to Huawei and most manufacturers rely on equipment produced by U.S. companies.
The CCP is not happy about this. It’s threatening to cause trouble for U.S. companies like Apple, Cisco, and Boeing. Huawei needs semiconductors for its smartphones—it’s now the second largest manufacturer in the world. It also needs the chips to power its 5G ambitions.
President Trump has been telling allies to exclude Huawei gear from their 5G networks because its equipment could be used by China for spying. The new restrictions come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing, triggered by what the United States calls the regime’s mishandling of the pandemic.

Newsweek revealed on May 12 a recent report from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
“The CIA believes China tried to prevent the World Health Organization from sounding the alarm on the coronavirus outbreak in January—a time when Beijing was stockpiling medical supplies from around the world,” the report said.

A non-partisan student society is demanding that universities and colleges in the United States close down China’s Confucius Institutes that have been teaching students communist Chinese perceptions.
The Chinese Communist Party-backed Confucius Institutes have been under fire for years for suppressing free speech and promoting an officially approved by slanted perception of Chinese history, among other things. But a newly-formed non-profit society of college students across the United States is pushing back.
The Athenai Society is demanding that American academic institutions shut down the CCP’s Confucius Institutes all across the country.
Rory O’Connor, the President of Athenai Institute, said: “We’re setting up more than 25 Athenai societies across the country to go after Confucius Institutes and to confront authoritarian influence and protect academic freedom with the rights of students. We are doing that with effectively no money.”
To date, at least 86 Confucius Institutes are being propped up by American universities, colleges, and school districts.
Hanban, an office within China’s Ministry of Education, says the program aims “to promote Chinese language and culture in foreign countries.” But education and China experts have criticized them for trying to shape students’ perceptions of China by limiting teaching to CCP-approved content. Their staff go as far as teaching that Tibet and Taiwan are Chinese territories, and also avoid talking about the regime’s human rights abuses and political history.
Rory O’Connor, the President of Athenai Institute, continued saying: “If we don’t have an accurate perception of China, if we don’t have an accurate understanding of the Chinese Communist Party, we can’t actually make effective, well informed decisions. And that has implications, that has costs, that has consequences.”
O’Connor also said that Chinese students are the most affected by Confucius Institutes. He said there were some incidents where people from these institutes or other Chinese organizations physically intimidated his friends from Hong Kong at UC Davis.
Ultimately, he wants them to be held accountable, which he said isn’t happening because universities acquiesce to their demands.
O’Connor expressed: “When you’re having a totalitarian government preventing people from being able to speak out, and the university just says ‘tough luck, we don’t want to infringe upon their freedom,’ it’s just wrong, and that’s what’s happening.”
A U.S. subcommittee has reported that from 2006 to 2018, China pumped over $158 million in funding to U.S. schools for Confucius Institutes. But nearly 70 percent of universities and colleges failed to report that they each got $250,000 or more in foreign gifts from Hanban.
The Athenai Institute’s Washington Appeal says that academic bodies can choose to continue to benefit from an authoritarian state, or they can choose to stand on the right side of history.
But they can’t do both.

The air in Hong Kong filled again with tear gas on May 24 after months of relative quiet during the pandemic lockdowns.
Thousands returned to the streets to voice their opposition to Beijing’s proposal for a “national security” law that was presented at the Chinese regime’s rubber-stamp legislature this week—bypassing the Hong Kong legislative council.
According to Hong Kong police, at least 180 protesters had been arrested as of Sunday 10 p.m.
Beijing’s move was met with international criticism as critics argued that the law would undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms, which the Chinese regime promised to preserve after the city’s sovereignty was handed over from Britain to China in 1997.
Planned March
Netizens on Hong Kong’s social media quickly called for a march on Hong Kong Island from Causeway Bay to Wan Chai beginning at 1 p.m. local time on Sunday.
The groups held banners and placards voicing their opposition to the CCP’s national security law that they see as destroying the promises made between the British government and the Chinese regime under the Sino-British Joint Declaration.
Crowds of demonstrators dressed in black flouted coronavirus social distancing measures to gather in the Causeway Bay district, a popular shopping area, and chant slogans such as “Stand with Hong Kong,” “Liberate Hong Kong” and “Revolution of our times.”
They repeated the longstanding “five demands” of prior demonstrations, including for universal suffrage and an independent inquiry into instances of police violence.
Before the march took off, a large number of police officers were seen gathering in Causeway Bay, including patrols at the local metro station, where they stopped people for inspection.
Police fired the first shot of tear gas at around 1:30 p.m. local time outside the local shopping mall Hysan Place in Causeway Bay in an effort to disperse protesters. The first arrest was made about 20 minutes later.
At 2:30 p.m. local time, the Hong Kong government issued a statement saying that “rioters” had thrown items at police officers and blocked roads with miscellaneous objects. It added that the police were using “minimum necessary force, including tear gas” to disperse “rioters.”
Police have since fired multiple rounds of tear gas and pepper spray. Journalists covering the protests were also hit.
The local police were already gearing up for a possible confrontation with protesters earlier in the day, with a police water cannon vehicle parked outside of the Hong Kong Liaison Office in the morning, the Hong Kong branch of The Epoch Times reported.
At around 3:20 p.m. local time, a police water cannon fired at protesters and journalists near Canal Road Flyover.
Lee Cheuk-yan, the alliance’s chairman, told local media that Beijing was “digging its own grave” by proposing the national security law.
Recently, over 200 parliamentarians and policymakers from 23 countries issued a joint statement, saying that China’s law is a “flagrant breach of the Sino-British Joint Declaration.”

In Shulan City, located in China’s northeastern Jilin Province, a woman was recently found to have contracted the CCP virus on May 7 and subsequently a cluster spread was identified involving 16 people who had come into contact with her.
She works as a laundry woman in the Shulan Police Department, and her husband is a police officer. Consequently, the Police Department was completely shut down. Many employees in the police department and education department are currently under quarantine.
The Epoch Times was able to speak to three locals in Shulan.

The University of Queensland (UQ) is threatening to expel a student activist for organizing several pro-Hong Kong rallies on UQ’s main campus, and for criticizing the school’s relationship with the Chinese regime. An internal email from UQ shows a member of its communications team asking the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor to notify the Chinese Consulate about the pro-Hong Kong protests.
Drew Pavlou, a 20-year-old philosophy student, organized several demonstrations in support of Hong Kong protesters, and criticized the Chinese regime’s repression of Uyghurs and Tibetans.
Following the protests and Pavlou’s criticism of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) human rights abuses and the university’s ties to the regime, he was summoned to a disciplinary hearing on April 27, 2020.May 20.
Pavlou walked out of the hearing after UQ’s disciplinary panel refused to provide access to documents he had sought for his defense. UQ published the internal emails on July 24, 2019 after Pavlou gave a press conference in which he questioned UQ’s relationship with Beijing.

When employees of Songsen Textile Company went to work on Monday, May 18, they found that all the sewing machines were gone and there was no electricity.
Songsen Textile Company is a garment and bedding maker in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province. The company owner did not notify the employees of the shutdown, and furtively removed all the machines over the weekend.

The Shanghai plant of the global leader in the electric car industry, Tesla, did not reopen as scheduled on May 6 after the May 1 Labor Day Holiday in mainland China, raising concerns.
Tesla’s headquarters is located in Los Angeles and the plant in Shanghai joined its production line in 2019. The temporary shutdown was confirmed by an employee of the Tesla plant who said that it was due to the impact of the pandemic. According to Chinese media, the shutdown of the plant in Shanghai was a result of a “component shortage” from overseas.
In response to this, a Tesla China official released a statement: “Tesla Shanghai is adjusting to normal production due to test run[s] and maintenance of production lines that were carried out during the recent holidays,” and “all work is being executed according to plan.”
Mr. Zhang, an employee at the Tesla plant confirmed to NTD that the shutdown is due to the impact of the pandemic.
Journalist: “Why did Tesla not open for work as scheduled? Is it because of the pandemic?”
Mr. Zhang: “Yes.”
Journalist: “When will the plant open for work then?”
Mr. Zhang: “We don’t know.”
A customer service agent for Tesla, on the other hand, indicated that they do not have any information on the factory.
Customer service agent: “We do not have any information concerning the shutdown or the reopening. You need to refer back to our official website.”
According to Auto Annual Ring’s report, the localization rate of Tesla ’s Shanghai plant was about 30% and highly relies on the overseas supply chain. As the pandemic continues to worsen in the U.S., not only did Tesla discontinue its production but Ford, GM, Fiat, Chrysler, and other North American plants have also shut down temporarily.
In addition, the Detroit Auto Show announced its cancellation and the supply chain of auto parts has been hit hard as well. For instance, many internationally renowned auto parts suppliers such as Bosch, Aisin, ZF, and others have different degrees of production shutdowns.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) announced that N-95 masks produced by Chinese car manufacturer BYD failed to pass an inspection, and that BYD has been denied approval. The decision will have a significant impact on BYD’s $1 billion mask deal with the state of California. The federal regulator said after an investigation that BYD’s factories in Shenzhen and Changsha, China, were in “not acceptable” states, and declined to give specific reasons as to why the masks were denied approval.
In early April, California Governor Gavin Newsom placed a $1 billion mask order with BYD, demanding a monthly supply of 150 million N95 masks and 50 million medical masks, with a deposit of nearly $500 million. The deal has raised substantial concerns with the public. The company must return nearly $250 million to California, since delays in getting federal certification prevented it from providing the N95 masks on time.
So far, the FDA has revoked authorization for more than 60 Chinese mask manufacturers. Only 14 remaining Chinese companies are still allowed to export masks to the United States.

When the CCP’s annual political meetings began on May 21 in Beijing, a delegate drove his sedan into the bike lane and almost knocked down a cyclist.

Black-clad protesters and tear gas returned to Hong Kong’s streets on Sunday (May 24).
But if you’re suffering from a sense of deja vu – here’s what’s new: these are the biggest protests since lockdown restrictions began.
The reason: Beijing’s plan to impose national security laws on the city.
Thousands marched through Causeway Bay amid fears that the ‘one country, two systems’ formula – which guarantees broader freedoms for the global financial hub than exist on the mainland, is under threat from China’s tightening grip.
Democratic Party politician Lam Cheuk-Ting said the situation is critical:
“We are worried that the Chinese Communist Party is using the evil law to further suppress Hong Kong people.”
Sunday’s rally was initially organized against a controversial national anthem bill, but the proposed national security laws sparked calls for more people to take to the streets.
Police fired teargas to disperse crowds in chaotic scenes reminiscent of last year’s at times violent mass protests and some protesters tried to set up roadblocks.
China has dismissed an international outcry over the proposed legislation as “meddling” and says the laws are “necessary” and will not harm Hong Kong’s autonomy or foreign investors.
But the backlash against Beijing’s play intensified on Saturday (May 23) as 200 political figures from around the world said in a statement that the proposed laws are a quote: “comprehensive assault on the city’s autonomy, rule of law and fundamental freedoms.”
