On Monday, May 11, the United States began to tighten travel visas for Chinese journalists, to protect U.S. National Security. The United States Department of Homeland Security announced that the new measure took effect on May 11, and this new rule will limit visas for Chinese reporters to a 90-day period, with the option to extend. Previously, such visas were usually unrestricted and did not need to be extended.
A senior Department of Homeland Security official said the new rules would allow the department to review Chinese journalist visa applications more frequently and would likely reduce the overall number of Chinese journalists in the United States. “It’s going to create greater national security protections,” the official said.
The new rules will not apply to journalists with passports from Hong Kong or Macau, China’s two semi-autonomous territories, according to DHS.
In March this year, the Chinese Communist Party expelled American journalists from the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post from China.

In Shenyang city, located in China’s northeast, a second wave of the CCP virus outbreak has occurred at the city’s No. 463 Hospital, which resulted in its lockdown. Residents revealed that quite a few people have contracted the virus, but local authorities are not reporting the situation.
The authorities have adopted a large-scale quarantine. Some Twitter users disclosed that the cost for the 14-day quarantine in Shenyang is 8,286 yuan ($1,167), which is even more expensive than that in Shanghai. Some residents criticized the authorities of profiteering from the pandemic.
State-run media reported on May 15 that the latest outbreak began in Shulan city located in China’s Jilin province and then spread to Shenyang. At present, more than 7,500 people have been isolated and under observation in Shenyang and have been receiving the nucleic acid test. The reopening of schools has been postponed again. Some Twitter users revealed that the 14-day quarantine fee in Shenyang—including food, lodging, and testing—is 8,286 yuan ($1,167), which is higher than the cost in Shanghai. They said that the hospital runs like a black market by profiting from the pandemic.
Shenyang resident Mr. Li disclosed that because many people were infected at the hospital, it was closed the day before, but local authorities are covering up the situation.

Tian Yuxi, a 24-year-old woman, went to Wuhan Union Hospital on Jan. 16. She contracted COVID-19 while in the hospital and died on Feb. 6.
Tian’s mother, Yang Min, took to the streets on May 11 to plead for her daughter’s rights. Wearing a large “injustice” sign on her back, Yang went to the municipal complaints office to file a petition. She carried her daughter’s portrait and two cardboard signs that read “The government conceals the truth about the epidemic” and “Give me back my daughter.” Four unidentified men stopped her and dragged away.
Yang told Epoch Times that she had three demands:
1. Investigate the legal responsibility and crimes against humanity committed by officials at every level who concealed the epidemic, hid the truth, and publicly apologize to the families of all of the victims.
2. Compensate me for the economic and spiritual loss in my family.
3. I reserve the right to appeal to the media networks to explain the need for the law to be enforced.
“If we had known about this virus, we would not have gone to the hospital and my child would not have left,” Yang said.

Even though we haven’t seen many reports about the pandemic from Beijing, the regime has been on high alert regarding spread of the CCP virus. A recent recording of a local health official returning a phone call to a resident revealed how large amounts of data are being manipulated to monitor and control citizens during the outbreak.
Ms. Liu of Chaoyang City, Beijing, had just given birth to a baby. The authorities notified her that she was designated a close contact of someone infected and was now under mandated quarantine. After many phone calls, Ms. Liu could not get official confirmation of her status. She filed a complaint to the local health center. On February 14, a phone call between Ms. Liu and the director of a local health center revealed that there was a secret list of people considered to be at high risk of infection. This list, which local officials were unaware of, had been compiled by the central government.

Tommy Yuen (Yuen Man On), a Hong Kong singer who supports Hong Kong’s protests against the Extradition Bill, recently had his Facebook fan page with 80,000 fans suddenly closed by Facebook and could not even search for his own name. After much effort, the fan page was reopened on May 3rd. He expressed in an interview with The Epoch Times that he has a fear of “being disappeared” and suspects that Facebook is being manipulated and controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.
Tommy Yuen has been managing his Facebook fan page since August 2019 and since then, many pro-communist netizens have been attacking him for his posts and reporting them to Facebook. For nearly two weeks, his posts about police brutality have been deleted and he was accused of “spreading discriminatory speech against the police” by Facebook. Yuen suspects that Facebook in Hong Kong might have been controlled by the CCP, who does not want the public to know about the problems of police brutality.
Yuen said: “The posts are all about police brutality and it makes me think that Facebook is trying to help the CCP hide the information about police brutality because all my posts about police brutality have been reported.”
On the night of April 30, when Yuen was posting on Facebook calling citizens to register to vote as soon as possible, he noticed that his Facebook was completely shut down. He could not leave comments nor publish posts, and later his fan page was blocked.
He said: “The fan page was deleted without any warning. Facebook did not send notification, usually it warns you with a page blockage of 7 days or 14 days, but this time there was no warning at all. I am worried, worried about what had happened. I am very worried.”
The night’s live performance was forced to be canceled because the fan page was blocked. All the preparations went to waste and there was no way for him to notify his fans about the cancelation of the performance.
Yuen indicated that after his Facebook fan page was blocked, there was no channel to appeal to Facebook and his name did not even seem to appear in the search on Facebook. He feels a fear of “being disappeared.”
He continued: “The worst part is that I could not even appeal to Facebook when I should be able to normally. When I tried to appeal, a blank page came out and there was nothing written there. And then, I was trying to search my name, Tommy Yuen Man On, on Facebook, no results showed up. I did not exist. This is horrifying, do you understand?”
Yuen believes that if Facebook can suddenly silence a public figure without recourse, then it will be able to do this to any account in the future, so he must come forward and speak up.

By May 10, Russia recorded more than 10,000 daily new cases of CCP virus infections for seven days in a row. Many Chinese petrochemical workers in Russia wish to return to China, but they can’t afford the expensive air tickets. They organized a strike, hoping that Chinese authorities will provide assistance to help them get back home.
A video released on May 8 showed a huge crowd of workers gathering in a plaza. There is a blue gate-like structure with a Chinese slogan couplet in white stating, “Happily enjoy our work while we are here, return home safe and sound when the job is done.”
An insider revealed that these workers had been on strike for three consecutive days, but as of now, the Chinese authorities have taken no action to assist them.

On April 26, the China Human Rights Lawyers group issued a statement to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the CCP stripping Tang Jitian and Liu Wei of their lawyer licenses. The group also called on the CCP to comply with international conventions as well as the constitution to protect human and lawyers’ rights.
In the statement, the Chinese Human Rights Lawyers group stated that the CCP launched revised laws in 2010 and wrongfully revoked Liu Wei and Tang Jitian’s licenses. The CCP authorities demonstrated their arrogance by abusing power and persecuting human rights lawyers.
The CCP ’s suppression of human rights lawyers can be traced back before 2010. One notable case is Gao Zhisheng, a well-known human rights lawyer whose license was stripped by the CCP and was secretly abducted and tortured in 2006 for representing Falun Gong practitioners, Christians, and other faith groups.

President Tsai Ing-wen was sworn in for her second and final term on Wednesday in a ceremony at Taiwan’s presidential palace in Taipei. Gloria Tso reports.
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-Wen was sworn in for her second and final term on Wednesday (May 20) and made her message loud and clear; that Taiwan strongly rejects China’s claims of sovereignty over the island.
“Both sides have a duty to find a way to coexist over the long term and prevent the intensification of antagonism and differences. I also expect the leader of the other side (China) to take up equal responsibility to stabilize the long-term development of cross-strait relations together.”
In her speech at Taipei’s presidential palace, Tsai said Taiwan could not accept becoming part of China under its “one country, two systems” offer, which is supposed to guarantee autonomy.
But Tsai called for talks with China so that both sides could coexist.
Tsai led Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party to a landslide victory in January vowing to stand up to China.
Recently, Taiwan has also accused China of keeping it out of the World Health Organization.
During her speech, Tsai said Taiwan would continue seeking active participation in international bodies.
“Over the next four years, we will continue to fight for our participation in international organizations, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with our allies, and bolster ties with the United States, Japan, Europe, and other like-minded countries.”
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo congratulated Tsai on Tuesday (May 19) praising her quote “courage and vision in leading Taiwan’s vibrant democracy.”
Meanwhile, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said on Wednesday that China would not tolerate any talks about Taiwan’s independence.

Hong Kong netizens launched Mother’s Day flashmob rallies on May 10th, but they were chased away by the Hong Kong riot police. A 13-year-old student reporter, Lu, from Student Depth Media was surrounded by the police, and later was taken to the police station and detained more than an hour before being released.

The trains in Wuhan were mostly empty last month. Now people seemed to have let down their guard. On May 8, many people took the metro to go to work. Although everyone was wearing a mask, it was impossible to maintain a safe distance between people.
Chinese netizens expressed their concerns that there are two major issues that pose serious health risks.
First, Chinese-made diagnostic kits were only 30-35% accurate. That means 65-70% asymptomatic patients will have a false negative test result, and they are free to move around.
Second, passengers are in close proximity in buses and trains. One of the netizens said, “How come the local authorities never thought about increasing the metro frequencies to help passengers maintain social distancing?”

The CCP virus has prompted the manufacturing industry to consider diversifying its supply chains. According to reports from Indian newspaper The Economic Times, Apple is planning to shift nearly a fifth of its production from China to India. Experts say the scale of investment, around $40 billion over the next five years, could also make India the largest exporter of Apple products, the report said.
Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said in an interview: “We are really doing that, so as a part of this trip, the maps facility will be several hundred million dollars. And so all of these things add up to a significant amount of economic activity.”
Cook started investing in India four years ago. As the pandemic takes a toll on the global economy, supply chains are shifting away from China. Apple is accelerating its plans to open factories in India. According to The Economic Times, the Indian government in March approved the Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for large-scale electronics manufacturing. The goal of the PLI is to increase the production of electronic components, semiconductors, and mobile phone components, creating 200,000 new jobs over five years. Indian officials revealed that Apple is considering shifting 20 percent of its production capacity out of China, which sums up to around $40 billion in investment over the next five years, The Economic Times reported.
Vice President of Taishin Securities Investment Advisory, Huang Wenqing said: “(The U.S. block on China’s) technology, as well as the tariff trade barrier, are issues that might heat up again in the future. Therefore, it is likely that China-based production bases, such as Honghai [Foxconn], will start to shift their production capacity outwards.”
Although 90 percent of Apple’s products are currently assembled in China, its main supplier—Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn—has long begun laying out strategies (to build factories) in India. Foxconn signed a pact with India in August 2015 to invest $5 billion over five years. In fact, Foxconn manufactured and assembled the iPhone XR in India last year.
Wistron Corp has long begun producing affordable versions of the iPhone SE, as well as the subsequent iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 related products in South India since 2017.
Some experts say that Apple has not only focused on the domestic market, but has also gone further to make India a major production and export hub.
Industry Analyst of Taiwan Institute of Economic Research, Qiu Shifang said (during a phone interview): “In the past, Apple’s main production capacity was highly concentrated in China, which made it difficult to shift its production elsewhere. The supply chain of Taiwanese manufacturers may also be required to match the needs of downstream original brand manufacturers (OBM). For component manufacturers, the apparent overall elongation in the supply chain will make them face a certain degree of challenge.”
According to The Nikkei, Apple plans to transfer up to 30 percent of production of its popular Airpods from China to Vietnam, amounting to about 3 to 4 million pairs. Apple’s plan to shift its production capacity away from China in the medium to long term has clearly become an irreversible trend.

On Apr. 27, several media in mainland China reported that Qingpu District in Shanghai successfully sold two residential land plots. China Merchants Shekou Industrial Zone Holdings won the bid on the two parcels to the north of Songze Avenue, Qingpu District, for $4.037 billion yuan ($571 million USD), with a floor price of $23,559 yuan ($3,335 USD) per square meter, a premium rate of 12.84%.
China Merchants Shekou Industrial Zone Holdings is a city development and operation flagship enterprise of China Merchants Group. It is also an important participant of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
The video below takes place in a residential community on the north side of Songze Avenue in Shanghai. The residential community has 11 buildings, and police ordered a number of excavators to demolish the buildings. In an authoritarian state, citizens have no way to express their dissent. They can only watch their homes being torn down and record videos of their discontent.
