There are both domestic and overseas infections. There are cross transmissions with this unknown latent phase. It’s also required to wear masks in Shanghai. A person got infected after just 16 seconds of contact. Their encounter in a public place was recorded on a surveillance camera and was reported on TV just a few days ago.

Reporter: Have companies in Shanghai resumed operations?
Mr. Chen: Yes, there’s an order that industries resume production. Even hotels will open. But on March 29, Shanghai authorities closed hotels again. Amusement parks, zoos, and so on were open for a few days but are now closed.

Reporter: What does that mean?
Mr. Chen: That tells us a new outbreak of CCP virus infection is taking place in Shanghai.
Mr. Yin: I have seen more than 10 national chain hotels designated as quarantine sites. Other than that, nothing seems especially worrisome. That’s how it looks on the surface. But there’s no definitive answer about schools reopening which is concerning.

Reporter: Are schools set to re-open in September?
Mr. Yin: It is said so, but not officially.

Reporter: How do you make sense of that?
Mr. Yin: It’s clear there are new infections. Otherwise, it would be back to normal. The school should re-open. With all the propaganda, everything looks okay, and people don’t feel any sense of crisis. If you analyze it based on schools’ reopening dates, you realize there are still problems even though there’s no news on any isolation or new cases in our area.

Reporter: Are people alert or relaxed?
Mr. Yin: Not exactly relaxed. There’s not much gathering or chatting on the streets. Not many people stroll on the streets. People go out mainly for grocery shopping or errands.

Reporter: Shall we assume this border closing order suggests the outbreak is getting more serious than it was?
Mr. Hu: That’s for sure, it will only get serious. I heard that Hongkou Football Stadium had become a makeshift hospital. There are also 11 chain motels in Shanghai designated as quarantine sites.

Reporter: When did that happen?
Mr. Hu: I don’t know. It was never officially reported.
Yesterday, a friend’s nephew, who works at the Shanghai Hongqiao High-speed Railway Station, said that many of the high-speed train crews had been quarantined.

“As an average Wuhan resident, I did not receive any warning before our departure,” Kathy said she made plans to visit the US in January during the Chinese New Year break last October. Before her trip, she made a restaurant reservation to have New Year’s dinner with her family. Now thinking back on this, she finds it quite scary.

“The Chinese regime didn’t tell us anything… well actually, they did. The ‘stopped rumors,’ they said the epidemic is preventable and controllable, and this is why people are so angry about Dr. Li Wenliang’s death.”

Kathy said all the information was blocked in Wuhan, no one could access any news about the outbreak. One of her distant relatives’ entire family all passed away within a month.

Even though the outbreak has also happened in Silicon Valley, she feels differently than she did back when she was in China.

Kathy:
“Here, in the US, the news is very transparent. People here are not as anxious but are instead more rational. I can watch Trump’s briefing every time.”
“In China, how will people get compensated? No one has addressed this issue or on resolving societal issues. All in all, it is not transparent there.”
“After the CCP claimed the situation had been contained, they reported zero new domestic cases. I did not bother to look at their data anymore. The data they provided is useless.”

Although the outbreak disrupted Kathy’s original travel plan, she and her family cannot go back to China, she has found accommodation here with some help. Kathy said, “Whether we feel the fickleness of the world or we feel the universal love of humanity here, we are learning something new every day.” “Sometimes I don’t feel I am a tourist anymore, as I extend my stay here. I feel a sense of belonging, and it makes me feel that this is how a human being should be living life.”

In mainland China, taxi drivers owe money to their taxi companies every day as soon as they wake up, in the form of franchise rent. The industry is tough, with drivers working day and night all year round, only for their companies to take away most of the income.
But now, life has become even harder for taxi drivers all across China amid the impact of the CCP virus.

In Shantou City, Guangdong Province, in southeastern China, where taxi services have been suspended, drivers were on strike on March 30 demanding that their company offer them a lifeline.

Some unfurled a banner that read,
“Taxi business is in the doldrums amid epidemic. We can’t survive.
We ask for free rent for three months to tide over the crisis!”

The situation in Wuhan is so desperate that one resident said he would rather have the CCP continue lying about there being ‘zero new cases,’ and opening up the city, than keeping it locked up. Wuhan residents have been struggling for months now, unable to make an income, and relying on sparse donations.

Reporter: Regardless of the confirmed cases or suspected infections, there are no reports. What do you think of that?

Mr. Gao: We prefer there to be no reports so that the lockdown can be over sooner. The situation is too unbearable. Our main concern is to regain our freedom as soon as possible to be able to survive. So we prefer that they continue to lie by reporting zero new infections. That way they will remove the lockdown sooner. Without the lies, Wuhan will continue to be locked down. We have nothing to eat, and no job, but we’ve got to survive. Between contracting a virus and survival, which one is important? Survival is more important.

Mr. Gao: We either die from the virus or we die from starvation. We’ll starve to death if we are stuck at home. We’ll die from the infection if we go out. Either way, we’ll die. I’d rather die from the virus. I don’t want to starve to death. I have to try to make a living for myself.
We have no government. The regime will not give us money for basic expenditures. We have no extra savings. No cash. There are still utility bills and mortgages to pay. Many people have loans, but no money.
For over two months, there’s no help from the regime, how can you survive? Our monthly earnings could only maintain the minimum needs. For two months, there are no earnings. How can we keep living like this?
Especially to the people in Wuhan, it is said that there are donations from the entire nation, supplied to us. No, we’re not getting anything! Donated fruits? No! Donated veggies? No. Donated oil, rice? No! Zero!
But we have bills to pay. We have no other option but to purchase highly-priced produce, rice, and oil. We have to buy them to feed ourselves. Where’s the money? No money. That means death. There’s no money to buy anything. So, I’d prefer if the regime continues making phony statements of zero cases. The sooner they lift the lockdown, the sooner we’ll be able to make some money on our own. It’s better than starving to death.

Reporter: There was news about many people starving to death at home.
1450 Mr. Gao: Not many, there’s no report of that now. I have seen a couple of cases. Not many of them, but it did happen.
In my community, it was announced that they would go door-to-door to check people’s temperatures every day. People from the community staff came three times so far. They did not check my temperature. The first time they came to book vegetables for us, but we had to pay ourselves. The second time was to deliver rice. But I fell asleep, and it was after 9 p.m. I fell asleep and did not get the rice. It’s been 59 days since the lockdown, and only once did I enjoy eating a fish provided by the regime. The third time they came to ask if I had registered for the health code. That’s about it in my community.
