The U.S. embassy in China has announced that ambassador Terry Branstad will retire and leave Beijing early next month.

Branstad, 73, is a former governor of Iowa. He first forged ties with President Xi Jinping several decades ago when Xi visited Iowa.

Last week, Branstad tried to publish an article in China’s ‘People’s Daily’ titled “Resetting the Relationship Based on Reciprocity.” The “People’s Daily” refused to publish it. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, it shows how much the Chinese regime fears “their own people’s free-thinking” and the “free world’s judgment” about their governing practices inside China.

Pompeo said Branstad’s contributions will have ‘lasting, positive effects on U.S. foreign policy’ for decades to come.

At the end of August, 12 Hong Kongers were arrested by the CCP’s maritime police while trying to flee to Taiwan by sea. They were detained secretly for more than 20 days. On September 13, the Yantian Branch of the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau announced that the 12 people had been under criminal detention on suspicion of illegally crossing the border. These 12 people, including “Hong Kong Story” member Li Yuxuan and other Hong Kong youths who had participated in the anti-extradition movement, were intercepted by the Guangdong Coast Guard on their way to Taiwan on August 23 and detained in the Shenzhen Yantian Detention Center.

On September 11, the U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo stated that The United States is “deeply disturbed that Hong Kong democracy activists, arrested two weeks ago, have been denied access to lawyers of their choice. We hope Chief Executive Lam’s stated commitment to protecting the rights of Hong Kong residents is more than just words.”

Jiang initially agreed to the scheme because he thought he was contributing to the nation’s epidemic crisis. Jiang owns Shenzhen Jipingyong Tech Company, a Shenzhen-based e-commerce company. He procured the medical supplies through his company that has an office in South Korea where Jiang is based.

Huang Zhongnan, his broker in China, told Jiang that the medical supplies would be donated to frontline healthcare workers or ordinary citizens who needed it to fend against the spread of COVID-19.

But Huang later revealed that the medical supplies were handed off to officials in government and foundations, who sold them for a profit.

Jiang decided to go public with his story to unveil the corruption in China.

A Chinese company with links to Beijing’s military and secretive intelligence arm has amassed the personal details of more than 35,000 Australians as part of a giant global database targeting influential figures and their families,

The company, Zhenhua Data, is tied to the People’s Liberation Army, Ministry of State Security, and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and has collated the profiles of 2.4 million people across the world.

The data contains information on 35,558 Australian individuals, including prominent people in politics, business, law, academia, and defence. It includes birth dates, addresses, marital statuses, and political leanings.

Bank records, job applications and psychological profiles were also included in the data, much of which was taken from public documents, including news articles, criminal records, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok.

However, 20 percent of the data is not open source, including confidential documents, indicating that the information was obtained through hacking or the dark web.

The database was leaked by an anonymous employee of Zhenhua Data and discovered by Professor Chris Balding, who worked at Peking University until 2018 when he fled to Vietnam over safety concerns.

Beijing has cultivated relationships with overseas Chinese-language media via major global conferences headlined by Communist Party leaders. Experts say it is part of CCP’s broader united front work. The revelations come after four Chinese nationals and journalists were denied re-entry into Australia following allegations they engaged in espionage or foreign interference.

Since 2013, 92 Chinese-language media outlets from Australia have taken part in the Global Chinese Language Media Forum.

The conference is backed by major Chinese Communist Party (CCP) organs, including the Information Office of the State Council, Beijing’s internet censorship arm; China News Service, the second-largest state-run media in the country; and the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office—which has been accused of influence activities.

The CCP has stepped up its efforts to persecute Falun Gong while facing pandemic, floods, economic downturn, food crises, and a total stalemate in international relations. Some CCP’s internal documents that have been exposed a few days ago show that the persecution of Falun Gong has been integrated into CCP’s various political activities, from the assessment of the leadership team, “anti-pornography”, “safety construction”, and “village revitalization”. Even in the strategies of pandemic prevention and control, there are contents related to suppressing Falun Gong.

According to a confidential document issued by the Organization Department of the Fuyang Municipal Party Committee of Anhui Province, the degree of suppressing Falun Gong has been included as the assessment indicators and scoring standards to assess the leadership and the party building of the municipalities and provincial cities in Anhui Province.

Mainland human rights lawyers Xie Yanyi and Xie Yang pointed out in an open letter to the European Union: “Today, the biggest human rights issue is in China, and China’s biggest human rights issue is the issue of Falun Gong.” They said, “with Falun Gong treated in injustice, the country is in danger!”

Recently, two Australian journalists stationed in China were raided by the Chinese National Security Police in the middle of the night and were restricted from leaving China. The CCP did not explain the reason for such action, but after the Foreign Ministry of Australia stepped in, two journalists have returned to Australia safely. This unprecedented event accelerated the deterioration of the relationship between Australia and China. Presently, there is no Australian journalist stationed in China.

Due to the pandemic, the Australian-China relation took a turn for the worse earlier this year. The CCP is unsatisfied with Australia calling for an independent investigation into the origin of the CCP virus, and thus has been repeatedly retaliating against Australia. Recently, the Australian government has raised a travel alert, warning Australian nationals in China of the risk of arbitrary arrest.

After receiving advice from the Australian Embassy about their safety last week, Bill Birtles, a journalist from Australia Broadcasting Corporation, and Michael Smith, a journalist from Australian Financial Review, were both raided at home in midnight of September 3 by Chinese National Security Police. They were interrogated by the police with bright light and were told that “they have been restricted from leaving the country”. The police warned that they must stay and cooperate with the “national security investigation”.

After being interrogated, two journalists feared being disappeared and immediately took shelter at Australian Embassy in Beijing and Shanghai respectively. On September 7, they returned to Australia safely after Australian Foreign Ministry stepped in. After arriving in Australia, both journalists said that it is a relief to be back to the country with genuine rule of law. As they look back at their rush departure from China, they believe that this is a political move from Beijing.

According to a new report by the National Association of Scholars (NAS), the College Board has partnered closely with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for over a decade, allowing Beijing to influence Chinese language and culture teaching in K-12 classrooms across the United States.

On September 6, the report released found that the College Board, a New York-based nonprofit best known for administering the SAT and AP standardized exams for college admissions, worked with the CCP to develop an AP (Advanced Placement) Chinese language and culture course for high schools, helped China gain control over training for Chinese-language teaching in the country, and strongly promoted Beijing-funded Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms.

Billed as Chinese language and culture programs, Confucius Institutes and Classrooms have drawn heavy criticism over its role in spreading Chinese propaganda and suppressing free speech on college campuses and K-12 classrooms.

At the report’s online launch hosted by The Epoch Times “American Thought Leaders” program, Rachelle Peterson, the report author and NAS senior research fellow, said: “China has managed to build out an entire educational system before the public caught on to what has happened.

The findings come amid heightened scrutiny over the CCP’s efforts to influence American universities, as well as its aggressive campaign to steal U.S. research and technology.

U.S. Revokes Over 1,000 Visas of Chinese Nationals Due to Military Links

On Sept. 9, a State Department spokesperson said that the United States has revoked more than 1,000 visas of Chinese nationals over military links.

The Department spokesperson told The Epoch Times in a statement: “We continue to welcome legitimate students and scholars from China who do not further the Chinese Communist Party’s goals of military dominance.”

Starting from June 1, the State Department began implementing a proclamation issued in late May by President Donald Trump. The proclamation was to limit Beijing’s ability to leverage Chinese graduate students and researchers to steal U.S. technologies, intellectual property, and information to develop advanced military capabilities.

Australian Report Discloses CCP’s Coercive Diplomacy

The latest report released by Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) exposed how the CCP has used “coercive diplomacy” in the past decade to force and bully other governments or corporations to comply with it. The report called on every nation to come together to resist the CCP. However, experts believe that decoupling from the CCP is the solution to the problem.

On September 1, Australian Strategic Policy Institute published a report called “The Chinese Communist Party’s Coercive Diplomacy” in which CCP’s “coercive diplomacy” used to suppress every single country in the world for the past decade is detailed. The report has been tracking the CCP’s use of coercive diplomacy from 2010 to 2019 and recorded 152 cases of coercive diplomacy, with 100 cases targeted foreign governments and 52 cases targeted at certain companies. Taiwan is also affected.

The report mentioned that the CCP’s coercive tactics include economic and non-economic measures. Economic measures can take place in trade sanctions, investment restrictions, tourism bans, and popular boycotts. Non-economic measures can include arbitrary detention, restrictions on official travel, and state-issued threats.

Trump: Ending Dependence on China in the Next Four Years

President Trump held a rally in Winston Salem, North Carolina, on Sept. 8, stating his policy agenda for the next term, including ending dependence on China, promoting the return of enterprises, and strengthening law enforcement. He also reiterated that this election is crucial.

President Trump said: “While I’m President, America will remain the No.1 producer of oil and natural gas on Earth and we will remain energy independent.” Trump also promised to end U.S. manufacturing’s dependence on China.

Trump also accused Biden of allowing the CCP to plunder a large number of American jobs during his 47 years in office and pointed out that if Biden is elected, the United States will face a series of disasters.

Pompeo Tells Southeast Asia to Stand up to China; Shun Its Firms

On September 10, the United States’ top diplomat urged Southeast Asian countries to stand up to maritime bullying by China and to reassess business deals with its state firms, adding to heated exchanges between two powers jostling for influence.

Speaking remotely to foreign ministers of the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the region should be confident in the United States and know it can bank on its support.

ASEAN has said it does not want to take sides amid friction over a recent spike in military activities by both powers in the South China Sea and ahead of a November election in which U.S. President Donald Trump will tout his tough stand against China.

From Houston to the small town of Esbjerg in Denmark, the Chinese regime has its eyes on Chinese nationals and foreigners around the world—people it hopes to influence into furthering Beijing’s interests.

Recently, The Epoch Times obtained a leaked government document that disclosed a list revealing that the Chinese regime seeks to “cultivate talent” in a wide breadth of sectors and countries.

For decades, Beijing has maintained such talent-recruitment programs, such as the widely scrutinized “Thousand Talents Plan,” which lures overseas Chinese and foreign experts into working in China’s science and tech sectors—to help fulfill its ambition of turning China into a high-tech manufacturing powerhouse.

Japan, India, Australia Plan New Global Supply Chain to Counter China

Experts say that Japan, India, and Australia are planning a new global supply network and are working out an initiative called the Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI) to reduce dependency on China.

They say that the initiative is a result of the emerging geopolitics in the post-coronavirus world.

Satoru Nagao, a visiting fellow at Hudson Institute and an expert on India–U.S.–Japan security cooperation, told The Epoch Times in an email: “This cooperation is well-related to current U.S. policy toward China. Washington has an interest in preventing Beijing from gaining the wealth it needs to rapidly modernize its military.”

Hong Kong in Shock After Police Tackle a 12-Year-Old Girl

Footage of two officers tackling a 12-year-old girl to the ground on a Hong Kong street over the weekend has ignited a fresh outpouring of anger amid ongoing criticisms of police violence.

Video shared widely on social media showed police kettling a group of people on a sidewalk in the district of Mong Kok. The girl, who was in the crowd, then started to run away. Shouting “stand still!,” an officer chased her as another tackled her to the ground; a third then joined to restrain her.

Since mass pro-democracy protests erupted in the city last June, Hong Kong police have come under growing criticism over excessive use of force in handling protesters. Incidents last year include alleged sexual assault of female students, indiscriminately pepper spraying and beating train passengers, and a two-week-long siege of college campuses.

CCP Honors Medical Workers, but Not Whistleblower

On September 8, the Chinese regime held a ceremony honoring medical experts who contributed to controlling the virus. Communist leader Xi Jinping claimed his control over the virus proves what he calls the “incomparably strong leadership of the Communist Party.”

But Chinese netizens noticed one name was missing among the honored. Doctor Li Wenliang, the whistleblower from Wuhan, tried to alert the public to the infectious virus as early as December.

He was summoned by Chinese police for what they deemed spreading rumors online and later died from the virus. Li’s Weibo account has since become China’s virtual wailing wall—or memorial wall—with over 1 million comments.

Since at least 2003, the College Board has partnered closely with the Chinese government to design an AP Chinese Language and Culture course, serving as a recruiter for Chinese government initiatives, and helping the Chinese Communist Party design and gain control over American teacher training programs.

As the administer of the SAT and the Advanced Placement tests, the College Board reaches more than 2 million students annually and exerts significant influence over schools, teachers, parents, and policymakers.

In this event, reporter and author Rachelle Peterson, a senior research fellow at the National Association of Scholars, will present the findings of Corrupting the College Board.

We’ll also hear from Jan Jekielek, senior editor of The Epoch Times; Rory O’Connor, president and chairman of Athenai Institute; and Bruce Gilley, professor of political science at Portland State University.

U.S. Considering Blacklisting Huawei’s Chip Supplier

The U.S. is considering blacklisting Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), the largest Chinese semiconductor manufacturer, and investigating its ties to the Chinese military. Since SMIC is the provider of microchips for Huawei, the situation is getting worse for Huawei.

On Sept. 4, Reuters quoted an official from the U.S. Defense Department saying that the Trump administration is considering whether to add China’s top chipmaker SMIC to a trade blacklist. A current U.S. official and two former U.S. officials revealed to Reuters that the U.S. is investigating the relationship between SMIC and the Chinese military.

China Unveils Global Data Security Initiative, Targets U.S. Clean Network

The United States continues to warn the international community to guard against the CCP’s high-tech companies. On September 8, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that the CCP is launching a Global Data Security Initiative which will not require Chinese companies to steal overseas data in violation of the laws of other countries. Strategy experts said that this is a disguised version of the Belt and Road Initiative and the CCP will not relax its espionage. The Wall Street Journal also pointed out that the CCP’s initiative is meant to counter the U.S Clean Network plan.

On Sept. 8, Foreign Minister Yi attended the Global Digital Governance Seminar held in Beijing. He stated that the CCP’s “Global Data Security Initiative” maintains open, secure, and stable global supply chains; opposes undermining key infrastructure or data theft by using information technology, and forces firms to store data generated overseas in their home countries.

Trump Again Raises Prospect of ‘Decoupling’ U.S. Economy From China

On Sept. 7, President Donald Trump again raised the prospect of decoupling the U.S. economy from Beijing, to bring back manufacturing jobs from China and key supply chains back to the United States.

As the presidential election nears, Trump has pledged as part of his reelection bid to reduce the nation’s reliance on China as the world’s biggest manufacturer. Last month, the president floated the idea of a complete decoupling from China during his second term, meaning cutting off economic ties for national and strategic reasons.

Tens of thousands of students and parents in Inner Mongolia walked out of classrooms and staged protests after authorities announced that local Mongolian-Chinese bilingual schools would stop teaching Mongolian. Parents rushed to pick up their children from school.

Hongkongers Arrested at Sea ‘Will Have to Be Dealt With’ by Mainland China

On Sept. 8, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said that twelve people from Hong Kong who were arrested as they reportedly sailed to Taiwan for political asylum will “have to be dealt with” by mainland China, but the city government would try to provide assistance.

On Aug. 23, Chinese authorities arrested the 12 people after intercepting a boat off the coast of the southern mainland province of Guangdong. Local media have reported they were headed to Taiwan to apply for political asylum.

Lam said in a regular weekly press conference: “The question is not a question of simply getting (them) back. If these Hong Kong residents were arrested for breaching mainland offenses, then they have to be dealt with according to the mainland laws and in accordance to the jurisdiction before any other things could happen.”

O’Brien told reporters at a briefing: “There’s always going to be propaganda. There’s always going to be efforts to influence us. We know the Chinese have taken the most active role.”

The national security advisor concurred with Attorney General William Barr’s comments earlier this week that China, rather than Russia, poses the greatest threat to U.S. election security. O’Brien said he agreed with Barr’s assessment “100 percent.”

O’Brien described President Donald Trump as the first president to stand up to the Chinese in 40 years, saying the administration has taken “strong action” in confronting the regime’s unfair trade practices, theft of U.S. intellectual property, and human rights abuses.

The administration recently sanctioned Chinese officials and a paramilitary group over their role in repressing Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. It’s also sanctioned Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam and other Hong Kong and Chinese officials for undermining freedoms in the city.

Pompeo: President Trump Evaluates China’s IP Theft

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says President Trump is looking into ways to prevent intellectual property theft by Chinese nationals and students.

In an interview with a DC Radio show, Pompeo said: “The Chinese Communist Party has stolen hundreds of billions of dollars of intellectual property, and with that tens and hundreds of thousands of American jobs. They’ve stolen this information, either by taking it through cyber means or, … by their people actively working inside of our places of research.”

Pompeo said previous administrations have turned a blind eye and President Trump is the first to take it seriously.

China Forcibly Collects Blood Samples From Falun Gong Practitioners

On August 2, when Shen Fang, a 70-year-old Falun Gong practitioner living in Shanghai, refused to open the door to four police officers who arrived at her apartment, they called up a locksmith and broke in. Despite her protests, the four pinned her down, grabbed her wrist, and scratched her hand multiple times to draw her blood.

The blood sampling was “required by the state,” they repeatedly told her.

One police officer shouted while covering his badge number: “The law doesn’t apply to you guys. We’re going to wipe you all out!”

According to Minghui.org, a U.S.-based clearinghouse that keeps track of the Chinese regime’s persecution of Falun Gong, dozens of adherents of the spiritual practice Falun Gong have faced similar ordeals across the country in recent months.

Falun Gong, a spiritual practice with a set of meditative exercises and moral teachings based on truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance, has been brutally suppressed in China since 1999. Over the past two decades, hundreds of thousands of adherents have been thrown into labor camps, detention centers, “reeducation” facilities, and psychiatric hospitals, where they are tortured to coerce them into renouncing their faith, according to the Falun Dafa Information Center.

The recent blood testing especially raises concern in the context of mounting evidence that the Chinese regime is commodifying prisoners of conscience by forcibly removing their organs and selling them for transplant surgery.

As U.S.-China relations become increasingly tense, the chances of a U.S.-China decoupling has drawn increasing attention. Some economists believe that if the United States joins hands with its allies in decoupling from the CCP, it will cause a huge blow to China’s economy, dropping its GDP growth to 1.6%. Australia, America, Japan, and India could formalize their quadrilateral strategic security ties at an in-person ministerial meeting in Delhi in the coming weeks.

On Aug. 31, in an online seminar at the annual U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum, the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. State Department Stephen Biegun said the Indo-Pacific was lacking strong multilateral structures.

He said: “It is a reality that the Indo-Pacific region is actually lacking in strong multilateral structures. They don’t have anything of the fortitude of NATO or the European Union.”

“The strongest institutions in Asia oftentimes are not inclusive enough, and so … there is certainly an invitation there at some point to formalize a structure like this.”

Ethnic Mongolians Petition Against Beijing’s Language Suppression

Tens of thousands of ethnic Mongolians have signed a petition in protest against Beijing’s new push to promote the country’s official language Mandarin in Inner Mongolia, a move that some have described as “cultural genocide.”

Last week, widespread anger began brewing in the northern Chinese region of Inner Mongolia after authorities announced they would introduce Mandarin-only teaching to local schools and replace Mongolian-language textbooks with standardized Chinese versions for core courses that range from history, politics, to literature.

The new policy has sparked fear among ethnic Mongols in the region that it would gradually wipe out their culture and endanger their very identity.

Over the past week, throngs of students, teachers, and parents have gathered at local school grounds, singing and chanting slogans in their native tongue while refusing to go back to the classroom, videos circulating on the internet show.

Maysak was the second typhoon to slam northeastern China and the Korean Peninsula in the past ten days.

Last week, Typhoon Bavi flooded roads and vehicles in China’s Liaoning Province along the coast on Aug. 27. Some regions in Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Inner Mongolia were also affected.

It is very rare for a Typhoon to strike China’s northeastern regions. Bavi was the first typhoon that slammed Liaoning Province since 1964. Compared with Liaoning, which has a partial coastline, Heilongjiang and Jilin are further away from the open sea. It is therefore even more unusual for a Typhoon to hit these two provinces directly.

US Launches Ideological Counterattack; CCP Diplomats Are Restricted in US

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently announced restrictions on Chinese diplomats who will need approval from the U.S. to visit university campuses, meet with local government officials, and host any cultural events. Experts believe that this is an ideological counterattack from the U.S. against the CCP.

On September 2, the Secretary of State announced that “the Department of State will now require senior PRC diplomats in the United States to receive approval to visit U.S. university campuses and to meet with local government officials. Cultural events with an audience larger than 50 people hosted by the PRC embassy and consular posts outside of mission properties will also require Department of State approval.”

Pompeo said that “PRC authorities implement a system of opaque approval processes designed to prevent American diplomats from conducting regular business and connecting with the Chinese people.” The attempts from U.S. diplomats “to host cultural events, secure official meetings, and visit university campuses are regularly obstructed.” Pompeo further explained that the reason why the U.S. demanded that all official PRC embassy and consular social media accounts be properly identified as PRC government accounts is because the U.S. Embassy is denied access to PRC social media and because Chinese citizens are blocked from using social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.

Pompeo also revealed that the next step taken by the U.S. will be to implement measures to prevent U.S. universities from CCP’s threats. On September 1, Pompeo indicated in an interview with Fox News that hopefully all Confucius Institutes will be removed from the U.S. by the end of the year.

A long article by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mouthpiece Xinhua News Agency that lambasted U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for criticizing the communist regime has unexpectedly backfired, as Chinese netizens expressed support for Pompeo and criticized the CCP.

On August 25, Xinhua published a 30,000-word article to criticize the speech Pompeo delivered outside the Nixon Presidential Library in California on July 23. Xinhua said it was “a total negation of the China-U.S. relations” and “malicious attacks” on the CCP’s political system, and “undermines the CCP’s relations with the Chinese people.” It then excerpted 26 passages from Pompeo’s speech, and criticized them one by one.

In its first passage, Xinhua quoted and combined three partial sentences from Pompeo’s speech: “The Chinese people are completely distinct from the Chinese Communist Party. … The biggest lie that they tell is to think that they speak for 1.4 billion people. … The CCP fears the Chinese people’s honest opinions more than any foe.”

Summer Snow, Hail, and Monsoon Floods Continue to Ravage China

China is seeing its longest monsoon season and record rainfalls this year. Moreover, areas outside the “monsoon territory,” such as northeastern China, were also hit by torrential rains on Sept. 1, causing serious flooding.

Sichuan Province, located in southwest China, was one of the worst flooded regions in August. Just a few days earlier, locals were busy cleaning up the mess when previous flood waters receded. Unexpectedly, another round of heavy downpours flooded cities and villages again on Aug 30.

Mount Wutai is home to a number of China’s most famous and well-respected Buddhist temples. On Aug. 27, Mount Wutai was hit by a rare snow, and tourists had to purchase or rent winter jackets to keep warm.

An intense hail storm battered Baotou, capital city of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on Sept. 1. The ground was covered by a thick layer of hail stones.

On the same day, Beijing was also hit by hail, along with heavy rains and strong winds.

Chinese Citizen Journalist Goes on Hunger Strike for Wrongful Prosecution

Zhang Zhan, a Shanghai citizen journalist, was arrested while conducting interviews in Wuhan during the epidemic and was subsequently taken into criminal detention. Recently, this case has been sent to the prosecutor’s office for review and prosecution.

It was reported that Zhang Zhan has been on a hunger strike in the detention center so she is physically weak. Because she was doing interviews in Wuhan during the epidemic, she was arrested by the CCP for picking quarrels and provoking trouble. According to her family members, they have been forcibly feeding Zhang Zhan since she was on a hunger strike in the detention center. Zhang’s health is extremely bad.

In early February, Zhang Zhan went to Wuhan to report the local situation during the epidemic. She visited hospitals’ emergency rooms, interviewed patients who went to fever clinics, went to Wuhan train station to interview travellers, and visited factories to report underemployment. She then uploaded and published her interview content to social media such as WeChat, Twitter, and YouTube.

On May 14, she was arrested in a hotel in Wuhan. On May 15, she was detained by Shanghai police and is currently detained at the Pudong New District Detention Center. Mr. Lu from Wuhan indicated that going on hunger strike is to fight for basic human rights.

On August 31, David Stilwell, the assistant secretary of State for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, announced a significant adjustment to the U.S. policy toward Taiwan. He also reiterated the U.S. stance on the “One-China” policy, emphasizing that the U.S. has no position on Taiwan sovereignty.

David Stilwell attended a seminar hosted by The Heritage Foundation in which he indicated that the U.S. will follow the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the three joint communiques between Washington and Beijing, and the Six Assurances provided by President Reagan to Taipei in 1982 as the guidelines for the U.S. policy toward Taiwan. These significant adjustments are still well within the boundaries of the one-China policy of the U.S.

Stilwell recognized Taiwan’s great success in battling against the CCP virus and also recognized the fact that Taiwan is the “critical node in global high-tech trade flows and U.S. technology supply chains, including for semiconductors and smart machinery.” He indicated that the U.S. looks forward to working with “trusted partners like Taiwan” and will “ensure that next-generation technologies, data, and intellectual property are protected from theft and manipulation by malign actors.”

German Foreign Minister: E.U. Wants Respect for Hongkonger’s Rights

On September 1, Germany’s foreign minister told his Chinese counterpart that the European Union remains concerned about the Hong Kong national security law and wants Hongkongers’ rights promised in the Basic Law to be respected.

The Basic Law refers to Hong Kong’s mini-constitution, drafted upon the city’s transfer of sovereignty from Britain to China. The document guarantees Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms not enjoyed in mainland China.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas made the remarks during talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was visiting Berlin amid local protests over the Chinese regime’s human rights abuses not only in Hong Kong but also in Xinjiang and other parts of the country.

Beijing enacted a national security law, which went into effect on June 30, criminalizing any acts Beijing determines to be subversion, secession, and collusion with foreign forces, with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
