As Microsoft joined forces with Walmart to try to acquire TikTok, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) suddenly adjusted its policy on technology export restrictions. According to the new restriction, ByteDance must be granted permission by Beijing to sell TikTok in the U.S. This has contributed uncertain aspects to the case.
On the night of August 30, ByteDance released a statement saying that it will strictly abide by the new rules when handling business related to technology exports.
He Liangmao, the co-founder of Media Analytica, indicated that the CCP deliberately blocked the acquisition of TikTok by a U.S. company for fear that some shadowy core data would be discovered by the United States.
Previously, the Trump administration demanded ByteDance to sell TikTok to American companies or choose to be banned in the United States over national security concerns. As of now, Microsoft, Oracle Corporation, and Walmart have expressed their interest in acquiring TikTok.
According to The Financial Times, insiders who are close to the TikTok sale negotiations said that ByteDance may quickly reach an agreement with U.S. companies but any deal will likely be opposed by the CCP. Insiders also said that longer time will now be needed to assess any deal after the new export control restrictions.
Chinese-Australian TV News Anchor Arrested by Chinese Regime
A Chinese Australian news anchor at CGTN, the international arm of the Chinese regime’s state broadcaster, has been detained in Beijing amid testy relations between Canberra and Beijing.
Australian foreign minister Marise Payne confirmed the arrest of Cheng Lei, a Chinese-born, naturalized Australian citizen and host of a business show that airs on the Chinese state-owned network. According to a ministry statement released on August 31, Beijing notified the Australian government of Cheng’s detention more than two weeks ago.
The statement reads: “Australian officials had an initial consular visit with Ms. Cheng at a detention facility via video link on 27 August and will continue to provide assistance and support to her and her family.”
The foreign minister said the department wouldn’t provide further comment, “owing to the Government’s privacy obligations.” Chinese authorities haven’t explained why Cheng was arrested.
Cheng, 49, is the second Chinese Australian detained by Chinese authorities since 2019, as bilateral tensions escalated over issues such as trade, Beijing’s tightening control on Hong Kong, and the Chinese regime’s handling of the CCP virus outbreak.

China: Shoddy Construction Causes Many Deaths and Injuries
Shoddy construction in China has cost the lives of many. On the morning of Aug. 29, when a big group celebrated a loved one’s 80th birthday inside a restaurant, the cement building suddenly collapsed. The incident took place at Chenzhuang Village in Shanxi Province. So far, 29 people have died and 7 were seriously injured.
According to a witness, he saw the rescue team carry out five people from the debris. All these people’s faces were beyond recognition.
More Chinese Cities Suffer Waterlogging in Late August
Local governments in China have spent billions on infrastructure projects in recent years. Most Chinese cities look modern and attractive with new communities, shopping districts, and extensive subways. However, it only takes a rainstorm to reveal the other side of these “image projects”: the terrible performance of the underground drainage system.
On Aug. 26, heavy rain battered Guangzhou, one of the four first-tier cities in China. Flash floods started to build up within an hour. By the time the three-hour rain stopped, many cars on the road were trapped in “rivers”. Also on the same day, a torrential rain mixed with hail, slammed Baoding City, Hebei Province.
Qinghai Autonomous Region borders Xinjiang and Tibet to the west and is a region that usually suffers from drought. However, on Aug. 29, the first rainstorm of the year quickly flooded Xining City, the capital of Qinghai.
Leaked: Chinese Officials Refused to Follow President Xi’s Orders
Since Chinese leader Xi Jinping came to power in 2012, he has launched an overarching anti-corruption campaign to rid the Chinese Communist Party of his political rivals. Since 2014, Xi targeted corrupt officials involved in the Qinling villas and sought to demolish the structures.
Among them is the former Party boss for the northwestern province of Shaanxi, Zhao Zhengyong, who received a two-year suspended death sentence for graft. Zhao was known to have close ties to former Party paramount leader Jiang Zemin. A faction loyal to Jiang is opposed to Xi’s leadership.
But an internal government document about the Qinling “anti-graft” project revealed that demolition work has continually stalled, and that some villas were still in operation.
China commentators analyzed that this indicates Xi is not yet successful in ridding the Party of disloyal officials and getting his subordinates to fall in line.

According to local media reports, mainland Chinese authorities detained more than 10 Hongkongers who were fleeing to Taiwan on a boat.
On Aug. 26, the Chinese regime’s coast guard confirmed on social media that its Guangdong forces intercepted a boat and arrested a group “suspected of illegally crossing the border” around 9 p.m. on Aug. 23 and has opened an investigation. The post said two of the arrested people were surnamed Tang and Li.
Under Chinese criminal law, the violation could result in up to a year in jail, along with fines.
Citing anonymous sources, Hong Kong media reported that the group consists of 12 Hong Kong youths who were crossing the South China Sea en route to Taiwan, in a bid to obtain political asylum there.
One of the people aboard was identified as pro-democracy activist Andy Li, whom the media said helped draft a report published this month that detailed abuses of power by Hong Kong police.
On Aug. 27, Hong Kong police commissioner Chris Tang Ping-Keung said at a press conference that he was aware of the arrests, but said he didn’t have further details, as the city’s law enforcement personnel weren’t involved in the operation.
Tang said cases involving Hongkongers who are arrested on the mainland while accused of violating mainland laws will be handled by local authorities according to Chinese regulations.

Cyprus, a small Mediterranean country that is a member of the European Nation, has become a “new world” for wealthy Chinese immigrants in recent years. A newly exposed investigation found about 500 Chinese billionaires and officials successfully obtained the “golden passport” from the country. Experts believe that many people have realized that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is collapsing soon, so they are trying to save themselves before this happens.
In recent years, Chinese media also admitted that many millionaires and billionaires in China all choose to transfer their accumulated wealth to foreign countries and change their nationalities.
Sheng Xue, a Chinese-Canadian author said that she knows some Chinese people that hold passports of small Central American countries. It is safer for them to hide their assets and identities there. “They are afraid to be sanctioned, to have their sources of wealth investigated, and to be held accountable for their inhumane crimes committed in countries like the Five Eyes Alliance. Therefore, they are willing to choose those small unknown countries,” she explained. They knew that the Party must collapse sooner or later so they had to flee before the crisis happened.
Previously, Xin Ziling, an expert on China’s institutional system, had revealed in an interview with The Epoch Times that before the 18th National People’s Congress, the CCP had conducted an internal investigation in which it found more than 85 percent of the CCP officials were prepared to flee the Party and family members of these officials had already settled in foreign countries. Xin Ziling said that Xi Jinping admitted in a conference in June 2016 that the CCP has reached the brink of collapsing. Hu Jintao and Wang Qishan have also issued several warnings over the crisis.

A recent investigation done by Australian media revealed that the Chinese Communist Party is taking advantage of the loopholes of Australian laws. The CCP secretly recruited dozens of Australian top investigative scholars to join the “Thousand Talents Plan” or other recruitment programs. This news shocked the Australian government. Many federal members have called on the Australian Parliament to conduct an investigation.
On August 24, The Australian, a broadsheet newspaper published in Australia, revealed a list of 32 scientists, including four non-Chinese scientists, who were recruited by the CCP into the “Thousand Talents Plan” and other similar recruitment programs with high salaries. The research of these scholars covers highly sophisticated fields such as Artificial Intelligence and quantum technology. They are from the top Australian universities and research institutions. While being employed in Australia, they frequently returned to China and applied for patents in China. Some of them have as many as 30 patents.
Li Yuanhua, former associate professor at Capital Normal University, said: “For instance, there are at least five people from the University of New South Wales on this list. Some of these professors receive 12 million AUD a year in funding from the Australian government. To the CCP, it is like spending a small amount of money to benefit individual researchers who will sell the results of their research for far more money than it offered. To Australia, having a group of scholars like these is simply equivalent to betraying national interests.”

Beijing has suspended beef imports from a fifth Australian slaughterhouse, just hours after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced new laws which could spell the end of controversial Chinese-backed agreements in Australia, including Victoria’s Belt and Road Initiative and the Confucius Institutes.
The Chinese General Administration of Customs suspended imports from Queensland beef producer, and family-owned business, John Dee Warwick.
On Aug. 27, the announcement alleged that the drug chloramphenicol was detected in sirloin meat from the slaughterhouse.
The department has notified John Dee Warwick of the suspension, ordered an investigation, and to report back in 45 days.
On May 13, the Chinese authorities suspended imports from four Australian slaughterhouses. At the time, Trade Minister Simon Birmingham noted the suspensions appeared to target “highly technical issues.”

Retired history teacher Yen Zhihua authored a book that disclosed facts about the Great Famine that occurred in Fuling District, Sichuan province from 1959 to 1962. The book was seen by media outside China. Recently, the CCP retaliated by having the Chongqing government suspend Yen Zhihua’s retirement pension and falsely accusing him of being a wanted fugitive.
Yen Zhihua, who retired from Chongqing Fuling Vocational Education Center, is also an independent scholar. He spent 30 years researching the Great Famine and wrote an 800,000-word monograph titled “The 1.4 million folks who were starved to death in the cage of the People’s Commune–documentary on the rural communist movement in Fuling region of Sichuan Province.”
During the process of writing the treatise, he visited nearly 20 counties in two regions in Sichuan Province and interviewed more than 100 witnesses and people who were involved, including local district secretary and production team leaders and members of the People’s Commune.
After his investigation, Yen Zhihua discovered that the Great Famine didn’t last for the government-stated three years, it lasted for four and a half years. The Great Famine started in early 1959 and ended in the first half of 1963. Yen said: “According to the historic documents and information I have read, and based on investigating a large number of people involved, the number of people who died of starvation throughout China is between 75 million and 125 million.”
Because he exposed the truth, and his findings were seen by people outside China, the Chinese Communist Party suspended his pension in August this year.
He indicated that he used to be concerned about what he would say when exposing the CCP in the past and would only say 80 percent of what he knows. But now that his pension is suspended, he will say whatever he has to say in the future.

In Shenzhen, China, a 21-year-old man‘s business was affected because his WeChat account was blocked. He repeatedly appealed to Tencent to no avail. Recently, he committed suicide by jumping off from the 11th floor of the Tencent User Reception Center, arousing public attention.
On August 25, Tang Ren (pseudonym), a Shenzhen resident, said that his younger brother’s WeChat account had been blocked many times, and repeated appeals have failed. Being unable to receive payment normally for his business after his WeChat account was blocked, he went to Tencent to find out why.
On the evening of August 15, Tang Ren’s brother went to Tencent but couldn’t find anyone again, so he jumped off the building’s 11th floor of the Tencent User Reception Center. Tencent insiders argued that the deceased’s WeChat account was blocked due to violations and that the account could be unblocked in a few days. Tang Ren said that there was a selfie video in his brother’s cell phone explaining why he commited suicide, but the police did not mention it. At present, Tang Ren has submitted the video to relevant departments, hoping Tencent will give an explanation. The local police said that the incident is currently under investigation. On this matter, a mainland netizen, Ms. Jian said that the Wechat account will be blocked as long as the government considers there are sensitive remarks.
Mr. Hu, a mainland netizen, said that Tencent is acting for the government. With the backing of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), huge problems, even homicides, can be trivialized. WeChat has more than one billion users worldwide and is also commonly used by overseas Chinese. However, Tencent has long assisted the CCP in monitoring users. In recent years, it has been reported that Chinese netizens have been arrested, detained, and even sentenced because of their speech on WeChat. On August 6, the United States announced sanctions on the CCP controlled WeChat and accused it posing a threat to U.S. national security.

Recently, the United States is ramping up its efforts to combat Chinese espionage and influence on college campuses.
It comes as the administration is using an “all-of-government” national security approach to counter the Chinese Communist Party infiltration. The controversial Chinese-backed Confucius Institutes are particularly under scrutiny over concerns it pushes propaganda and restricts freedom of expression in U.S. classrooms.
Meanwhile, a number of high profile speakers including national security adviser Robert O’Brien and FBI Director Christopher Wray, have given highly critical and lengthy speeches criticizing China’s regime. These speeches were unprecedented in their scope.
Today we have Brian Kennedy on the show to talk about the threat China’s influence poses in the United States. Brian is currently the Chairman of the Committee on the Present Danger: China, and also the author of “Communist China’s War Inside America,” available on Amazon now.

For three years on and off, Li Dianqi worked for about 17 hours a day making cheap clothing—from bras to trousers—in a Chinese prison. She worked for no pay and faced punishment by prison guards if she failed to meet production quotas.
One time, a team of about 60 workers who couldn’t reach their quota were forced to work for three days straight, not allowed to eat or go to the bathroom. The guards would shock the prisoners with electric batons whenever they dozed off.
Li described the prison, Liaoning Women’s Prison, located in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, as “not a place for humans to stay.”
“They arrest you and make you work. You work like animals,” Li said.
Li, now 69 and living in New York, was imprisoned at the facility from 2007 to 2010 for refusing to give up her belief in the spiritual practice Falun Gong. The Chinese regime has maintained an expansive persecution campaign against Falun Gong since 1999, after the practice surged in popularity to roughly 100 million adherents, according to official estimates.
In addition to clothes, the prison made a range of goods destined for export in the global supply chain, from artificial flowers to cosmetics to Halloween toys.
The Chinese regime’s forced labor practices have drawn fresh scrutiny as U.S. customs officials in recent months clamped down on imports made with Chinese prison labor. Since September 2019, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued four detention orders against Chinese companies, barring their goods from entering the country.

With more than 850 million internet users in China, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has become increasingly aggressive in internet censoring and blocking. Recently, The Epoch Times received an internal document of the CCP that showed municipalities in Henan province used human resources and materials to create hot topics or so-called “authoritative messages” to suppress negative public opinion.
In September 2016, 113 people in Shangcai county were wanted for impersonating soldiers in a nationwide wire fraud scheme. The media even exposed the fact that fraud had become a “business” in this very poor county and that each family in these local villages had tens of thousands of RMB in cash. This had obtained a great concern on the internet after the news was exposed. However, the hot topic of “the Cultural Festival of Shangcai County” suddenly appeared and was highly discussed. Slowly, people were distracted from the scandal. This seemingly unrelated “cultural festival” was recently proven to have been orchestrated by the local government to control public opinion.
Later, the internet commentators from Zhumadian city and Shangcai county forwarded a large amount of posts related to this “cultural festival” and also proactively set up discussions in relevant forums. Within 48 hours, more than 1,000 posts were commented and forwarded. At the time, there were more than 1,500 official internet commentators.
Moreover, 720 platforms in Zhumadian city participated in the online reviews at the time and more new media from the city also joined. Together they hyped up the hot topics to divert public attention. Tang Jingyuan, a commentator on current affairs residing in the U.S., indicated that this entire event showed that the use of lies to gain public support is deeply rooted in the marrow of the CCP.
“Creating incidents for new hot topics” is one of the ways the CCP suppresses negative public opinion. The internal document showed that another common tactic used to suppress information is publishing so-called “authoritative official information” that is full of lies.
The Epoch Times also made public “the Internet Assessment 2016-2017 Yearbook” of Shangqiu city and of Sanmenxia city in which instances of government occupying public opinion space to suppress negative reporting were evident. The authorities not only target the public when it comes to managing public opinion, but also demand an internal unified approach, or else they will be held accountable.
Experts believe that the CCP mobilizes a lot of manpower and resources to carry out systematic falsifications in these domestic social events, not to mention the major events such as the CCP virus pandemic. The CCP’s lies are not a matter of “yes or no” but a matter of “how many and how little”.

On August 25, Sweden’s Public Health Agency announced that more than 3,700 Swedes were erroneously told they had the CCP virus due to defects in testing kits made in China.
The incorrect results affected nine regions in the country in a 5-month span between March and mid-August, during which people who had mild or no symptoms at all received false positive outcomes.
The agency indicated that the same kind of testing kits have been shipped to many countries other than Sweden, and that it has informed corresponding authorities in Europe and the World Health Organization.
According to its website, BGI distributes COVID-19 testing kits to more than 80 countries in the world, with a production capacity of around 2 million.
Defective medical supplies from China, such as masks and testing kits, have previously drawn backlash from countries that received them, including Finland, Britain, Ireland, Canada, and Spain.

Ling Shuang, a well-known online writer from Shanghai, was sentenced to eight months in prison for criticizing the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Recently, he revealed to Radio Free Asia that he was hospitalized due to a stroke. After he was released from prison and during the time he was in the hospital, the local authorities cut off his cell phone and internet services in an attempt to silence him. He was also forced to relocate.
Ling revealed to Radio Free Asia that he suffered a stroke shortly after he was released from prison at the end of May. While he was hospitalized, the local authorities cut off his cell phone and internet services. He suspected that the reason behind this act was to prevent him from writing and speaking up on the internet. To this day, Ling has not recovered from the stroke and has no means to communicate with the outside world.
Ling had once criticized former CCP leader Mao Zedong and political movements such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution on the internet. On the night of Sept. 25, 2019, police broke into his house and arrested him after he spent 15 minutes talking to his friend on LINE, an international app for instant communication.
In April this year, he was sentenced to eight months in prison for “slandering Mao Zedong.” In addition to cutting off cell phone and internet services, Ling’s landlord asked him to move out as soon as possible, which was an order passed down from the local neighborhood association.
Yang Zhanqing, former Chinese senior non-government organizer, said that Ling’s situation showed that the local government sees dissidents as enemies and is afraid that these people would affect their administrative performance.
Teng Biao, a human rights lawyer, indicated that in China, it is normal for rights activists to continue suffering from suppression even after they have been released and have stopped engaging in human rights activities. The retaliation from authorities serves as a warning to the outside world that if you go against the regime, you may end up in a bad situation. The punishment doesn’t end after serving time in prison.

Young and middle-aged residents of coastal regions near China’s Yellow Sea had never seen a typhoon before. The last time a typhoon swept through the area was in 1964.
On the morning of Aug. 27, Typhoon Bavi made landfall in an area near the China-North Korea border, damaging homes and buildings, flooded roads, and toppling utility poles in North Korea.
China’s coastal city of Dalian located in Liaoning Province suspended all business and school operations, as well as train services.
Bavi packed maximum winds of 82 miles per hour near the eye of the storm. It was the strongest storm to develop in the Yellow Sea in the past 70 years.
Even before the arrival of Bavi, heavy rainstorms had already flooded Liaoning’s capital city of Shenyang on Aug. 24 and the coastal city of Qingdao in Shandong Province on Aug. 26. The city’s airport runways were flooded and flights had to land on runways that were covered in several inches of water.
The northeastern region of China is the country’s agricultural base. Autumn crops such as corn, soybeans, and rice are about to fully mature. Typhoon Bavi will inevitably cause huge losses to farmers in the affected area.
Bavi is the 8th typhoon to have formed in the Pacific this year. So far all eight typhoons have circumvented Taiwan, leaving the island state largely unscathed.

The U.S. government will remove Chinese apps such as TikTok and WeChat that present great threats in the U.S. in order to protect the privacy of American businesses and people and to minimize national security risks. Many countries have also followed the footsteps. After banning iQiYi in Taiwan, an online video platform based in Beijing, the Taiwanese government further announced a fine imposed on “Taobao Taiwan” and demanded it to withdraw its investment or make corrections within six months. Experts believe that Tencent may be the next target to be banned.
Following the recent shutdown of iQiyi, the Taiwanese government announced on August 24 that “Taobao Taiwan” has investment coming from mainland China. In addition to the fine, the company has a deadline of six months to withdraw its investment or make corrections. In October last year, Taobao Taiwan, a platform belonging to the Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group, was officially launched in Taiwan and operates under a brand license to the branch of a British company in Taiwan, Claddagh Venture Investment Limited.
It is understood that the User Service Agreement and Privacy Policy of Taobao Taiwan clearly states that by agreeing to the Agreement, members in Taiwan authorize Alibaba Group to use their personal information and to transfer their transaction information to Alibaba’s server located in China. Such a requirement may pose a security risk to users in Taiwan.
Experts believe that mainland investors may circumvent investment audits to enter Taiwan in the future.
Sheng Xue, a Chinese-Canadian author, indicated that the CCP’s infiltration and aggression in the world is everywhere, especially through the method of economic trade. This has created a huge impact on the entire world.
A netizen said that the Taiwanese government acted faster than the U.S. government. Another said that Taiwan did a great job. One also said that he has long stopped using Tencent and iQiYi because these are not representative of a free market environment and fair competition.
Recently, India blocked dozens of Chinese mobile apps, including TikTok, and also changed the rule by limiting Chinese investments in India. Bloomberg reported that India’s Ministry of External Affairs has been told that Chinese businessmen, scholars, industry experts, and advocacy groups will need prior clearance before being granted a visa.

The same tragic story that happened in Wuhan six months ago is now occurring in Xinjiang region again, when thousands of residents in high rise buildings shouted and screamed into the night in despair.
Xinjiang’s capital city Urumqi has been under strict lockdown for nearly 40 days, since authorities announced a resurgence of the CCP virus on July 16.
An Urumqi resident recorded the heartbreaking scene of people living in surrounding buildings screaming together to vent their frustration. It is clearly audible that the videographer himself was sobbing when filming.
In addition, residents in sealed-off buildings were asked to eat less, so as to produce less waste and remain inside for a longer time! The following is a WeChat voice message from a community manager.

Since the peak of China’s CCP virus pandemic in February, a three-color health code has ruled the lives of roughly 1 billion Chinese people, assessing whether they can move around freely or must stay in quarantine.
Enabled by the Chinese regime’s ubiquitous use of big data and overzealous attempts to stop COVID-19 spread, the mini-app rates each individual’s health with a green, yellow, and red code. The app is embedded within the super-app WeChat that citizens use for nearly all aspects of daily life, from paying for food to booking doctor’s appointments.
Authorities scan the barcode on people’s phones to check if an individual is virus-free, has had contact with virus patients, is COVID-19 positive, or exhibits symptoms of the virus.
While authorities haven’t explicitly mandated the usage of the app, the barcode must be scanned when boarding a bus or subway, checking into a hotel, entering a supermarket, and entering or leaving their residential district.
The collection and handling of sensitive personal data by WeChat have unsettled some cybersecurity experts, who worry that such information may apply to areas far beyond health and feed into the state’s surveillance machine.
Information remains limited about how people’s data is stored, but public reports and leaked documents suggest that WeChat is working closely with Chinese police and sharing the data without users’ knowledge.
Internal and public records both show that police authorities have access to the health code’s data.
The Epoch Times obtained an internal announcement from Xiong’an New Area, a state-backed megacity project in Hebei Province, that noted that the local police bureau would be “in charge of big data analysis, data mining, and in-depth application” of the health code.

The latest report published by Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) indicates that the CCP has established 600 “talent-recruitment stations” targeting overseas top professionals. The depth and breadth of the recruitment network is far greater than previously estimated by western countries.
Tien Yuan, a commentator on current affairs, indicated that the details and the accuracy of the CCP’s talent-recruitment programs reported in this research far surpass the total of past similar studies. It exposes the fact that the CCP’s talent-recruitment network has reached all major countries in the West, even in countries that are not particularly outstanding in terms of technology.
The report mentioned that over 80 percent of the talent-recruitment programs are run at a subnational level, and that the number of scientists attracted by it may be seven times more than national programs.
Zhang Xiaogang, a Chinese-Australian scholar, indicated that the CCP has a long history of infiltration and intelligence theft from the West, which poses a very serious threat to the United States and Australia. Zhang also pointed out that Australian technical professionals have a great understanding of the U.S. and by cooperating with the CCP, they betrayed the core confidential intelligence and national interests of both countries.
The report also mentioned many examples of economic espionage. In March 2019, Cao Guangzhi, a former employee at Tesla, was sued by the company for uploading more than 300,000 copies of files related to the source code for Tesla autopilot features to his personal iCloud account. In 2009, Cao Guangzhi and his three friends established the Association of Wenzhou PhDs USA. This association signed a cooperation agreement with the Wenzhou United Front to recruit talents in the U.S.
At the press conference held on August 21, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China responded to a question related to this report denying all facts revealed in the report and claiming that ASPI is an anti-China organization that created absurd fabrications.
However, Zhang Xiaogang pointed out that the author of the report, Alex Joske, is a researcher of Chinese descent who understands China very well. Dozens of investigation reports that Alex did have precisely pointed out the real problems of China. This report exposing CCP’s overseas talent hunting is even more informative and accurate.

About 500 people in a rural area of eastern China have fallen ill from the bacteria Shigella, which causes dysentery. Many suspect that the bacteria came from tap water, which was contaminated during earlier flooding.
Since Aug. 19, many seniors and children in Baoyi town in Anhui province, went to the town’s hospital to seek treatment for fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Doctors identified the disease as bacterial infection from Shigella. Chinese state media did not have any coverage of the incident until Aug. 23.
Villagers suspect that their tap water was contaminated by floodwater, which overflowed into the town’s water source, Wabu Lake.
Currently, tap water service in Baoyi town has been suspended, and villagers have to fetch water from neighboring towns.
