On August 5, PEN America, a non-profit organization that protects free expression in the U.S. and the world, published a report disclosing that Hollywood—tempted by the huge Chinese market—has been censoring itself to please Beijing. This has become the business model in Hollywood. Experts believe that this problem reaches far beyond Hollywood.

This 94-page-long report pointed out that Hollywood, being the most influential artistic and cultural medium in the world, has more than billions of audiences watching its films. But in the past decade, the U.S. film industry has been impacted by Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) censorship. Many major Hollywood production companies and producers are increasingly self-censoring their casts, scripts, and movie sets. They even directly invite CCP censors to participate in the movie sets so that they can be advised on how to avoid being censored.

The report also mentioned the strategy of “Borrowing a boat to go out on the ocean” used by the CCP to globalize its propaganda in order to influence foreign audiences. The CCP used this strategy to reach people who can’t be reached by news. The report said that the CCP censors can decide whether a film is permitted to be screened and promoted, and when they can release the film within China. This creates a huge uncertainty and even great costs for the studios.

Chinese scholar Wu Zuo-Lai indicated that self-censorship is very common in China and that PEN America’s independent investigation is a reminder to the American public of the dangers of the CCP culture, and that not even cultural giants like Hollywood can escape the temptations of the CCP. He believes that the blame is on the previous U.S. administrations.

Wu said that there may be some training in Hollywood to show guidance on how to avoid CCP’s censorship. But this is not the problem for Hollywood only, all businesses face the same problem. Politicians in Europe and in the United States need to come together to confront the CCP. It is very meaningful that the Trump administration is now using national power to fight the CCP, including the bans on TikTok and WeChat.

President Trump recently signed two executive orders that will ban WeChat and TikTok in the United States after 45 days if they are not sold to an outside company. Many Asian-Americans support the idea and believe that mobile applications like these are tools used by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to monitor and brainwash its users. They also suggested banning more Chinese-run applications.

This news was immediately discussed among Asian-Americans. Many of them expressed to NTD reporters that they support the strong measures implemented by the U.S. and even with the banning of WeChat and TikTok. They believe that these applications are not only messaging applications but also function as spyware.

Many netizens applauded the U.S. government’s decision.

Chinese citizen, Mr. Yu, said: “I understand the appeal of these Asian-Americans but there is one point- if you can’t adapt to the U.S.’s free society which protects individual privacy, then you better go back to your home country.”

Mr. Yu indicated that these Asian-Americans can definitely use other means such as video chat or international calls to communicate with their relatives living in China. Or maybe it is best we all work together to fight for the people in China to be able to use Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and other softwares.

Currently, Microsoft is discussing with ByteDance ways to acquire TikTok. The negotiation deadline is September 15.

On Aug. 5, a group of Chinese people, mostly young students, returned to China from Thailand and had to go through a 14-day quarantine in a hotel in Yunnan Province. However, local authorities demanded that they turn in their passports and other ID documents before the quarantine. In addition, the quarantine fee is outrageously high. The returnees tried to resist, but police arrived at the hotel to threaten them.

On August 10, a day after the Five Eyes Alliance released a joint statement, the Hong Kong government arrested Jimmy Lai, his sons, and many other Hong Kong pro-democracy activists under the National Security Law. After the imposition of the National Security Law in Hong Kong, the Ministry of State Security of China and the Hong Kong government recently launched a series of actions to arrest students, to disqualify candidates from running for elections, and to postpone the legislative Council election.

On August 9, the U.S. Department of State released a joint statement by the Five Eyes Alliance condemning the CCP’s erosion of the Hong Kong people’s freedom. The statement ended with, “Beijing promised autonomy and freedom under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle to the Hong Kong people in the Sino-British Joint Declaration, a UN-registered treaty, and must honor its commitments.”

The next day after the release of the joint statement, the Hong Kong government arrested Jimmy Lai, the founder of Next Digital Limited, and his sons under the National Security Law. The headquarters of Next Digital Limited was also raided and searched by 200 Hong Kong police officers. Later, Next Digital Limited posted on Facebook indicating that they are not afraid of suppression, they will continue to speak up, they will secure their position and hang in there with Hong Kong.

Reuters reported a statement released by Steven Butler, Asia program coordinator of the Committee to Protect Journalists: “The arrest of media tycoon Jimmy Lai bears out the worst fears that Hong Kong’s national security law would be used to suppress critical pro-democracy opinion and restrict press freedom.”

Deutsche Welle (DW) reported that the United Nations Human Rights Council had also questioned the Hong Kong government six questions which include how the Hong Kong government ensures that the interpretation of the Basic Law by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress will not adversely affect people’s rights, requesting the Hong Kong Government to provide relevant details on the establishment of the independent human rights institution, requesting the Hong Kong government to explain how they can ensure that the National Security Law will not be in conflict with the International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

In addition, the Hong Kong government has been asked by the United Nations to explain in detail the legislative process of the National Security Law and its extraterritorial effects.

Taiwan’s New Power Party called on the government to step up its assistance to the people of Hong Kong by granting political asylum, and to amend Section 18 of the Laws and Regulations Regarding Hong Kong and Macau Affairs.

In a press conference held on Aug. 13, the New Power Party that was formed in 2015, expressed its concern over the deteriorating situation in Hong Kong. They pointed out that the Chinese-ruled city is at a critical juncture now that Jimmy Lai and Agnes Chow were arrested.

The New Power Party hopes for an amendment made to Section 18 of the Laws and Regulations Regarding Hong Kong and Macau Affairs in the upcoming meeting in the Legislative Council on Aug. 17. They hope to put forward specific steps and legal procedures in amendment so that Hongkongers who need to seek political asylum will have a standard to follow. If they are not qualified for political asylum, then they would be able to apply for another type of assistance.

Qiu Xian-Zhi, a member of the Legislative Council from the New Power Party, pointed out that both the United Kingdom and the United States have adopted special measures to deal with the situation in Hong Kong. He also urged the Mainland Affairs Council to offer more help to the people of Hong Kong.

Under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University aims to produce journalists adherent to the standards of “”Marxist journalism””. Recently, U.S. media revealed that for many years, some American corporations and media outlets have been supporting such training with human and financial resources. The trained journalists have started to work for Bloomerg and other renowned media outlets, spreading the scourge of communism all over the world. However, as U.S.-China relations worsen, U.S. media is gradually taking a stance to cut ties with the CCP.

On the official Tsinghua University website, the introduction of the School of Journalism and Communication clearly states that it “has been actively exploring the theory and practices of Marxist Journalism to applying the Marxist theory in observing the world, selecting and handling news production.”

The U.S. State Department recently disclosed that Tsinghua University has clear ties with the CCP on issues of technology and national security, and it has repeatedly launched cyber-attacks against the U.S. government.

The National Pulse report revealed that the alumni of the program have gone to work for western media outlets such as Bloomberg, while spreading the scourge of communism all over the world.

In addition, a recent report published by The Washington Free Beacon revealed The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal received more than $100,000 per month to run reprints of Chinese propaganda articles from the CCP mouthpiece, China Daily. Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Houston Chronicle, and other large regional newspapers have done similar deeds. In the past decade, The New York Times published more than 200 propaganda articles that covered up the CCP’s violations of human rights.

However, just recently The New York Times quietly deleted hundreds of propaganda ads paid by the CCP from its website. A New York Times spokesperson said that this action corresponded to the decision made earlier this year to stop accepting ads from Chinese state-run media, including China Daily.

Wang Ya-Qiu, a Chinese researcher for Human Rights Watch, urged other U.S. media outlets to end their relationships with the CCP.

Recently, a popular topic discussed among overseas Asians is the ban on TikTok and WeChat’s parent companies, ByteDance and Tencent, by President Trump. Some people support banning WeChat, but others do not.

On August 6, President Trump signed an executive order prohibiting any American individual or entity from engaging in any transaction on WeChat or with Tencent Holdings Ltd. WeChat threatens national security. The order will go into effect 45 days after the date of the executive order. The executive order indicated that “WeChat automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users. This data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans’ personal and proprietary information. WeChat, like TikTok, also reportedly censors content that the Chinese Communist Party deems politically sensitive and may also be used for disinformation campaigns that benefit the Chinese Communist Party.”

Dong Guang-Ping, a Chinese dissident from Henan province who is now living in the U.S., said: “There are many ways to communicate nowadays, for instance, Apple’s Facetime is free and convenient. Even if you need to communicate with people in China, you don’t have to contact them every day. If WeChat is really banned, then it will not affect basic living. It is not a necessity, you will get used to it after a few days.”

He further indicated that banning WeChat does impact overseas Asians but not to a destructive point. The action is also beneficial to the U.S. and Asians-Americans in the long run as it makes it harder for the CCP to infiltrate the U.S. “The CCP uses WeChat to recruit Asians-Americans to protest or organize activities in the U.S. WeChat is the tool it uses to spread propaganda.” he said.

On August 7, the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry of China claimed that the U.S. suppressing Chinese companies is an act of bullying that will eventually backfire.

Jin Xiu-Hong, an Asian-American, indicated that the people inside mainland China are not even allowed to use apps or internet services provided by other countries. So why did the CCP become so furious at the idea of banning WeChat in the U.S. to the point that it incited many overseas pro-CCP media and pro-CCP Chinese to protest?

As a tradition, high ranking CCP officials and senior politicians vacation in Beidaihe district near Beijing during the end of July and early August every year. As a result, security in Beidaihe has been significantly upgraded recently. Petitioners said that there are about 30,000 military police stationed in the area and that petitioners from all over the country were repatriated, detained, or imprisoned before they could appeal.

Every year when the CCP high ranking officials attend meetings in Beidaihe district, petitioners from all over the country swarm into the district. As a result, local security is extremely strict. Since August, many petitioners indicated that Beidaihe has become a forbidden area again, and those who went there to appeal have been detained or imprisoned.

Gu Guo-Ping, a retired university teacher in Shanghai, became a petitioner when his house was forcibly demolished. He told NTD that human rights activists and petitioners are all on the black list of the Public Security Bureau. As soon as they use their ID’s to purchase train tickets, the police will know immediately and be able to stop them. “When we come back to Shanghai from Beidaihe, we are basically detained, tortured, or imprisoned for at least a month or two. This is the least. Now it is upgraded in Shanghai, a lot more strict now. As long as you come back from Beidaihe, you are tortured and detained. It is very evil and cruel,” he said.

Gu said that he made six trips to Beidaihe, four of which he was returned to Shanghai and imprisoned. Another two times he was detained in a criminal detention for 30 days. Last year when he was sent back to Shanghai, he was beaten by someone who was hired by the Shanghai police which resulted in four of his ribs being broken. He further revealed that every year when the meeting in Beidaihe is held, the authorities have to spend hundreds of millions of yuan (about 14 million USD), and the security scale is astonishing. The number of security officers involved is about 30,000 people, 10,000 from the Public Security Bureau, 10,000 from the People’s Armed Police Force, and 10,000 from the military. They are stationed in the tourist areas, the security level is very high.

Gu Guo-Ping slammed the CCP’s dictatorship as disasters are everywhere. These so-called public servants, who enjoy all kinds of privileges, each have a villa, and need 30,000 military and police officers for special protection. They treat petitioners as enemies. These petitioners are being brutally suppressed as if they were needed to be controlled to maintain stability.

According to a report from the Civil Rights and Livelihood Watch, starting August 1, the public security, traffic officers, quality supervision and industry and commerce departments of Shaoyang city in Hunan have jointly conducted a comprehensive clean-up of production, sales, driving, and maintenance of electric bicycles in Shaoyang city.

As of August 7th, thousands of electric bicycles were confiscated and temporarily impounded. That day, large-scale clashes broke out between thousands of residents who were fed up with Shaoyang police. The residents gathered quickly on the streets and marched to the city government and department of traffic police, demanding the removal of restrictions that make ordinary people’s lives difficult.

On August 10, Taiwan’s government said that Chinese air force jets briefly crossed the mid-line of the Taiwan Strait and were tracked by Taiwanese missiles as U.S. health chief Alex Azar visited the island to offer President Donald Trump’s support.

On Sunday, August 9, Azar arrived in Taiwan, the highest-level U.S. official to visit in four decades.

This visit comes after a period of sharply deteriorating relations between China and the United States. China, which claims the island as its own, condemned the visit.

A senior Taiwan official familiar with the government’s security planning told Reuters that China was obviously “targeting” Azar’s visit with a “very risky” move given the Chinese jets were in range of Taiwan’s missiles.

The incursion was only the third time since 2016 that Taiwan has said Chinese jets had crossed the strait’s median line.

Data released by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on August 10, showed that prices in China continue to rise. The price for pork increased 85 percent and the price for eggs increased more than 40 percent in one month. Many Chinese citizens indicated that they could not afford to purchase pork for a long time now.

Harbin resident, Ms. Deng, indicated that many people have lost their jobs as a result of the CCP virus pandemic in China this year. With no relief from the government, it’s a problem to even have food to eat. “Because of this pandemic, we are locked up in the house with no jobs. Everything is so expensive now, vegetables and fruits are also expensive. Things are difficult for us. Since the start of the epidemic, we have only received a bottle of alcohol in our community,” she said.

It is said that the African swine fever and the heavy floods in south China are the main contributors to the increase of price in pork. African swine fever has spread to the entire country since its outbreak in Liaoning Province in August 2018. Heavy floods accelerated the spread of the virus from the dead pigs buried underground, leading to a decrease in supply of pork.

Southwest China’s Sichuan province was hit by torrential rains again, and several rivers had water levels rise above the safety level. The province issued a Red Alert for flash floods at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 11—which was the first top-level alert this year.

According to official reports, in Ya’an city—the worst-hit area—the storm caused 6 deaths and 5 people were missing.

In Sichuan’s capital city Chengdu, by 10 a.m. on Aug 11, 150 flights were delayed and 14 were cancelled due to the severe weather.

Recently, three U.S. Congressmen demanded six top U.S. universities including Harvard University and Yale University submit their records of donations from foreign governments, including China and other authoritarian countries, in the past five years. Experts believe that this action was taken to purge the CCP’s infiltration from within U.S. universities.

On August 3, three ranking members of the House Committee on Oversight and Freedom sent a letter to Harvard University, Yale University, University of Chicago, University of Delaware, New York University, and University of Pennsylvania, citing a U.S. law that requires them, no later than a week from now, to submit records of donations received from foreign governments, and contracts and agreements signed with foreign governments since January 2015. These foreign governments include China, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Russia.

According to the statistics presented in the letter, since 2015, the University of Chicago has declared 30 gifts or contracts totaling $23,059,862 from China, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Russia—all of which were anonymous. Section 117 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 requires colleges and universities to disclose contracts with, and gifts from, any foreign source of over $250,000 to the Department. The congressmen demand these six universities to be transparent about the sources of anonymous donations and gifts. For example, the universities need to disclose that whether the donations or gifts came from the Chinese government, the Communist Party of China or any affiliated organizations, any Chinese national, or any business primarily located in China.

Last month, Robert O’Brien, the U.S. National Security Advisor, indicated in his speech that in recent decades, U.S. policy toward China has been the greatest failure since the 1930s. Because the U.S. neglected to understand the true nature of the CCP’s ideology, it was allowed to infiltrate the entire world.

Lan Shu. a commentator on current affairs residing in the U.S. believes that it is very important for the U.S. government to understand the extent of foreign funds and donations in these universities. Only by clearing out past relationships with the CCP and its infiltration efforts, and the experts in the West who have been bribed by the CCP to speak on its behalf, can we avoid repeating the same mistakes in the policies toward China. He thinks that more universities will be investigated after these universities submit their records.

According to a U.S. government notice posted on Aug. 11, goods made in Hong Kong for export to the United States will need to be labelled as made in China after Sept. 25.

The move follows China’s imposition of a national security law on Hong Kong and a U.S. decision to end the former British colony’s special status under U.S. law, escalating bilateral tensions that were already rising over trade war tariffs and the handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection notice said that the latest step will see Hong Kong companies subject to the same trade war tariffs levied on mainland Chinese exporters, should they make products subject to these duties.

It said that 45 days after its publication, goods “must be marked to indicate that their origin is ‘China.’”

The step was taken after the United States determined that Hong Kong is “no longer sufficiently autonomous to justify differential treatment in relation to China.”

In retaliation, China imposed sanctions on 11 U.S. citizens including lawmakers from Trump’s Republican Party on Aug. 10.

Non-stop bursts of lightning illuminated the night sky in Shanghai on Aug. 10. Oriental Pearl TV Tower—a broadcasting station and sightseeing landmark in Shanghai, was hit squarely by a lightning bolt.

A local meteorological station issued a thunder and lightning Orange warning. A Metro line’s power supply equipment was also hit by lightning and ran into problems.

Chinese netizens expressed their excitement over the incident, because the TV tower serves as the mouthpiece of the Chinese communist regime. The Chinese phrase “being struck by thunderbolt” means that someone who has committed unpardonable sins will eventually receive a rightful punishment.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Chicago have seized more than 19,000 fake IDs in the first half of this year, with the majority arriving from China and Hong Kong.

According to a news release issued by the CBP, the fake driver’s licenses were intercepted at the International Mail Facility (IMF) at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport between Jan. 1 and June 30 this year.

CBP’s Ralph Piccirilli said in a statement: “These counterfeit driver’s licenses can lead to disastrous consequences. Criminal organizations use these counterfeit IDs to avoid attracting attention to their illegal activities.”

CBP said many of the fraudulent I.D.’s had the same photograph, but different details listed. A major cause for concern was that the bar code attached to the fake Michigan licenses worked.

The fake I.D.’s can lead to identity theft, worksite enforcement, critical infrastructure protection, and fraud linked to immigration-related crimes such as human smuggling and human trafficking.

Timothy Lemaux, CBP port director for Dallas-Fort Worth, warned against obtaining fraudulent identity documents overseas, as counterfeiters will have access to personal information. He said, “We’ll continue to collaborate with local law enforcement to educate the public, and anyone who is contemplating purchasing a counterfeit I.D. online, on the potential dangers of sharing your personal, identifiable information with a criminal element.”

In many regions of China, drenching rain and floods have weakened the earth, roads, buildings, and brick walls.

On Aug. 8, a landslide occurred in Yibin city of Sichuan province. Huge rocks rolled down off a hill, smashing three vehicles and injuring at least three people.

In Xi’an city of Shaanxi province, 10 meters of the city wall at Qin Palace—a king’s residence built in 1374 during the Ming Dynasty—collapsed after heavy rain on Aug. 8, injuring at least four people.

Shaanxi local media reported that bricks and mud falling from the wall blocked a nearby road, injuring four passersby and damaging three sedans and a bus.

On Aug. 9, Xiaogan county of Hubei province was inundated in water after a rainstorm. A brick wall collapsed, destroying many cars parked along the wall.

Some accidents have been purely the result of shoddy construction.

For instance, on Aug. 7, strong winds peeled off the exterior walls of two high rise buildings in Baynnur city, Inner Mongolia.

Presently, CCP high ranking officials are vacationing in the Beidaihe district near Beijing in Hebei province. As a result, petitioners from all over China who left their homes for business or travel to Beijing are all intercepted, repatriated, illegally arrested, and detained by police officers and personnel responsible for maintaining political stability. Beidaihe district even became a forbidden area where no petitioners can enter.

On August 10, petitioner Yang Guang-Mei from Chongqing told NTD that she, along with Tang Dai-Quan, Gu Chun, and Gu Yong-Tian, were intercepted while they were at the high-speed rail station in Xingtai city, Hebei province. The police officers took their ID’s without any explanation.

Yang’s case is not isolated. According to the information posted by Civil Rights and Livelihood Watch on August 9, incidents where petitioners going to Beijing to appeal are intercepted and suppressed have significantly increased recently.

In a recent report published by Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment, the CCP was said to have co-opted European political and business elites using “friendship groups”. These “friendship groups” seem to assist in educational and cultural exchanges between Europe and China, but they are in fact the mouthpieces and intermediaries that CCP proxies use to help with the CCP’s united front to divide Europe.

On July 1, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment (CSBA) released a publication called “Uncovering China’s Influence In Europe: How Friendship Groups Coopt European Elites”. The report pointed out that “friendship groups” serve as mouthpieces and intermediaries for advancing Beijing’s domestic priorities and foreign policy goals. These groups consist of local politicians and business elites who, through various public events, help get rid of any negative rhetoric about the CCP and support European policies that are favorable to the CCP.

The report discovered that the way these “friendship groups” operate is to cooperate in the CCP’s united front work, for instance, to promote “Belt and Road Initiative” in Europe. They also receive “donations” from the CCP. Officials of the groups once openly expressed that such groups support the foreign policy of the CCP. Chapter 4 of the report indicated that “The Italy-China Friendship Association (ICFA) is an example of how the CCP advances its goals, policies, and programs abroad at the national level. The president of the ICFA, Irene Pivetti, is a former President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies who has deep political and business connections in China.” She once publicly defended the CCP’s human rights violations and supported the Belt and Road Initiative.

The report further revealed that this phenomenon not only occurs in Europe, but also in North America, Australia, and New Zealand. The report recommended that Europe and Western countries as a whole should pay adequate attention to these “friendship groups” and that policymakers need to implement measured approaches and policies to monitor and push back against CCP’s infiltration.

The Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) was set up in 1954 and appears to be one of the friendship groups’ sponsors. The CSBA wrote: “it was tasked to develop people-to-people ties with countries that did not have formal diplomatic relations with the PRC.” It is a covert agency for various CCP spy agents to gather intelligence espionage. Under the name of “Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries,” they collect intelligence information from countries around the world.

In February this year, U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, indicated that the National Governors Association and the U.S.-China Governors’ Collaboration Summit are examples of foreign governmental institutions influenced by the CCP’s “Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries”.

A group of British lawmakers have urged the UK government to impose sanctions on Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and other senior officials, for allowing the police to use excessive violence and force on pro-democracy protesters.

In a report that discussed the treatment of aid workers during the protests, the lawmakers said the Hong Kong Police Force had “breached international humanitarian law and principles, international human rights, and the Sino-British Joint Declaration.”

The report said that humanitarian aid workers were subjected to “intimidation, harassment, threats, physical violence, and arrests” during the protests that began last year in response to the introduction of extradition law. Even doctors and nurses “received treatment that fell short of international human rights law.”

Lawmakers in the UK urged the UK government to “explore whether the targeted humanitarian aid workers fall within the purview of the Refugee Convention and consider how they could be best assisted.”

This informal cross-party said that “the UK should urgently impose Magnitsky-style sanctions on those responsible for permitting the excessive police violence at a high level in the administration, including but not limited to Chief Executive Carrie Lam and the Commissioner of Police.”

It was first set up in November 2019 in response to the escalating political and social crisis in Hong Kong, which had been triggered by the extradition law.
