The worldwide demand for masks during the pandemic is through the roof. This supposedly good market for the Chinese manufacturers has brought challenges, supply shortages, and disruptions. The problems are caused by the oil and gas industry in China being a monopoly. Thus, the raw materials are only available to those certain privileged groups.
Lidi (alias) is a shareholder in a sanitary products company in Yiwu, Zhejiang. Driven by the huge market, the company is also producing masks. He mentioned, the melt-blown fabric (a continuous filament polymer) is only available through agents with good connections with Sinopec, the China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation. Therefore, any other sources of melt-blown fabric in China would only supply fake products.
