Black-clad protesters and tear gas returned to Hong Kong’s streets on Sunday (May 24).
But if you’re suffering from a sense of deja vu – here’s what’s new: these are the biggest protests since lockdown restrictions began.
The reason: Beijing’s plan to impose national security laws on the city.
Thousands marched through Causeway Bay amid fears that the ‘one country, two systems’ formula – which guarantees broader freedoms for the global financial hub than exist on the mainland, is under threat from China’s tightening grip.
Democratic Party politician Lam Cheuk-Ting said the situation is critical:
“We are worried that the Chinese Communist Party is using the evil law to further suppress Hong Kong people.”
Sunday’s rally was initially organized against a controversial national anthem bill, but the proposed national security laws sparked calls for more people to take to the streets.
Police fired teargas to disperse crowds in chaotic scenes reminiscent of last year’s at times violent mass protests and some protesters tried to set up roadblocks.
China has dismissed an international outcry over the proposed legislation as “meddling” and says the laws are “necessary” and will not harm Hong Kong’s autonomy or foreign investors.
But the backlash against Beijing’s play intensified on Saturday (May 23) as 200 political figures from around the world said in a statement that the proposed laws are a quote: “comprehensive assault on the city’s autonomy, rule of law and fundamental freedoms.”

During a Cabinet meeting at the White House on May 19th, President Trump said the trade deal between the U.S. and China “seems to mean less” to him, after seeing the way they handled the pandemic. He also questioned why the CCP let the virus spread all over the world.
President Trump said: “I feel differently now about that deal than I did three months ago. We will see what all happens, but it’s been a very disappointing situation. Very disappointing thing happened with China because the plague flowed in and that wasn’t supposed to happen and it could have been stopped.”
Trump explained to the reporters that the trade deal with China now seems not that important. Trump said: “It just seems to mean less to me.”
The President also questioned why the regime didn’t allow the U.S. to go into China during the early outbreak to help stem the virus spread. He said he was ‘disappointed’ with China.
Trump said: “So why is it that it was blocked very effectively from leaving that area and going into China? But it went out to the rest of the world, including the United States.”
The talk of blocking borders continued. Trump said they are considering a travel ban from Brazil given the current situation there. He doesn’t want people coming in and infecting Americans.
Trump said: ”Brazil has gone more or less herd, you know what that is, and they’re having problems.” resource
The health ministry of Brazil reported on May 19th that Brazil has over 271,628 confirmed cases, the third most in the world after Russia and the U.S. Scientists believe that Brazil’s testing capabilities are insufficient, so the actual number of infected cases may be 15 to 20 times higher. When asked about lifting travel restrictions between the United States and Europe, Trump said that it will have to wait until the U.S. and Europe are both doing well.
