Chongqing issued a red flood warning on June 22. Due to heavy rainfall in recent days, the Qijiang River’s Chongqing section on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River was expected to see the largest flooding since 1940, according to Chongqing hydrological monitoring station.
“Within the next eight hours, the water level would rise 10 to 11 meters, thus surpassing the safe level by 5.7 to 6.3 meters,” the station announced. Forty thousand residents downstream have been reportedly evacuated.
