Wu Quan, a lawyer from Hebei province was sentenced to 14 years in prison on charges of “extortion and blackmail” after exposing a corrupt official named Wang Jiang. Wang Jiang is the chairman of the Political Consultative in Zhangjiakou city.

Wu, while using his real name, exposed Wang’s crimes online. The report showed evidence that while Wang was Mayor and the Secretary of Zhuolu county, had forcibly requisitioned tens of thousands of acres of land from farmers, sold a distillery at a low price which led to the loss of state assets, and concealed the deaths of 12 people from two separate mining accidents.

The following day, Wu was arrested and asked the public to help gather evidence to incriminate Wu. Wu’s former defense attorney said the sentence was based on false charges.
