Recently, police in Hong Kong issued arrest warrants for six pro-democracy activists who fled Hong Kong, including one U.S. citizen. This is the first time Beijing used the National Security Law to suppress activists who are physically overseas. Experts believe that Beijing fears international pressure and if Beijing is trying to intimidate Hongkongers overseas with arrest warrants, it may backfire on them.

Beijing ignored international condemnation and forced the implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong on July 1.

The National Security Law implemented in Hong Kong is commonly seen by experts as the CCP’s blatant attempt to break the original promise of “one country, two systems” and to completely deprive Hongkongers of their remaining freedom, turning Hong Kong into a city like those of mainland China.

Jin Zhong, chief editor of Hong Kong Open Magazine said, “This is called shooting yourself in the foot. The result is totally the opposite of what they imagined. It will only make the overseas Chinese people more sympathetic towards Hongkongers and people in other countries—including those in Europe and the United States—who understand and care about Hong Kong will be more sympathetic and supportive toward Hong Kong.”
