A study shows there is something in the western environment which increases asthma and allergies.
From study: Our findings suggest a strong influence of the environment on the development of asthma and allergic diseases throughout the life course. The prevalence of asthma is generally higher in second generation than first generation immigrants. With length of residence in the host country the prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases increases steadily. These findings are consistent across study populations, host countries, and children as well as adults. Differences have been found to be significant when tested in a linear model, as well as when comparing between early and later age of migration, and between shorter and longer time of residence.”
As big tech in the US faces increased opposition from its own employees over Pentagon contracts, the head of Microsoft Corporation appears to have decided to throw his weight behind the US military and to offer them full support.
Microsoft is βgoing to provide the US military with access to the best technology … all the technology we create. Full stop,β Brad Smith, the president of the tech giant, said at the Reagan National Defense Forum, held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.
Smith also sought to explain his decision, saying his company actually wants βSilicon Valley to know just how ethical and honorable a tradition the military has.β He argued that the military should not be left out of global technological progress in the field of artificial intelligence, which is βof importance to everybody and not just young people who happen to live on the West Coast.β
βIn an engineered context, we might take the ability of the microbes to give up electrons, then use [those electrons] to talk to something like an autonomous vehicle. Then you can start imagining that you can create an electrical signal when the bacteria encounters some molecule in their environment,β NRL researcher Sarah Glaven said at a November event put on by the Johns Hopkins Universityβs Applied Physics Lab.

A 12-foot-sinkhole swallowed a man’s car as he was driving to work Saturday morning on Clyde Drive near Lem Turner Road.
JEA said the car was spinning around in circles in the sinkhole when they arrived at the scene.
The driver wasn’t hurt, but was shaken up.
βNext thing I know I just heard something go ‘bam,’ and the car just went up and under and started spinning,β Tyrone Oakes said.
He said he climbed out of the driverβs seat and on top of his car until the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department was able to pull him out of the hole.
βI was sitting on top of my car. They handed me the lifeline long pole, told me to jump, when I jumped I didnβt feel the bottom,β he said.
