A large complex of thunderstorms that parked out over Lake Michigan on Saturday afternoon produced what’s known as a meteotsunami. Translated literally, a meteotsunami means a large wave caused by weather. Strong winds combined with a drop in pressure pushed water toward the eastern Lake Michigan shoreline and then rippled south, into Grand Traverse Bay.

On June 13, the city of Qingdao was suddenly engulfed by convective weather caused by strong winds, hail and thunderstorms. A large number of trees in the urban area were broken, blocking traffic damaging cars vehicles. And some sea creatures started to fall from the sky. A brain-eating amoeba has been detected in the Louisiana water system – the third time the potentially deadly organism has been found in the same district since 2015.
Naegleria fowleri, a parasite which causes fatal brain swelling and tissue destruction, was identified in Terrebonne water. All freshwater sources in the parish have been affected, including drinking water, water in the bayous and pools, and water used for showers and baths.

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has been fiercely erupting for well over a month. Now, residents are finding little green gems that have fallen out of the sky during Kilauea’s eruption.
The green gems are olivine crystals, a common mineral found in Hawaii’s lava. At jewelry quality, the mineral is called peridot. As the volcano erupts, it blasts apart molten lava, allowing for green olivine minerals to be separated from the rest of the melt and fall as tiny gemstones.

Yellowstone National Park’s Steamboat Geyser is the region’s largest and up until 2018, it’s also erupted quite infrequently, often lying quiet for years. But over the past few months it has sprung to life and now seems to be erupting somewhat on a schedule, at least for the moment. Just after 1 a.m. Monday it sent boiling water hundreds of feet in to the air for the ninth time this year.
