Chinese government hackers have compromised the computers of a Navy contractor, stealing massive amounts of highly sensitive data related to undersea warfare — including secret plans to develop a supersonic anti-ship missile for use on U.S. submarines by 2020, according to American officials.
The breaches occurred in January and February, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. The hackers targeted a contractor who works for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a military organization headquartered in Newport, R.I., that conducts research and development for submarines and underwater weaponry.

The Western Hemisphere’s first major hurricane of 2018 is the Eastern Pacific’s Hurricane Aletta. Aletta put on a remarkable display of rapid intensification overnight Thursday, with the winds increasing by 70 mph in just 24 hours. Aletta was merely a tropical storm with 70 mph winds at 11 am EDT Thursday, but by Friday at 11 am, the hurricane had morphed into a fierce Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds. This rapid intensification episode was not well-forecast; the official NHC intensity forecast made at 11 am EDT Thursday called for Aletta to peak with 100 mph winds. The only other major tropical cyclones in the Northern Hemisphere thus far in 2018 have been the Western Pacific’s Typhoon Jelawat, which topped out as a Category 4 storm with 150 mph winds on March 30, and Tropical Cyclone Mekunu, which topped out as a Category 3 storm with 115 mph winds when it made landfall in Oman on May 25.

Yellowstone National Park’s largest geyser, Steamboat, is puzzling scientists after it erupted for the eighth time since March. The most recent eruption, occurring at 9:04 a.m. on Monday morning shot boiling-hot water hundreds of feet into the air, followed by hours of steam billowing out from the geyser.
Steamboat Geyser, unlike the regular Old Faithful Geyser, erupts very infrequently. Before this string of eruptions, Steamboat last erupted in 2014. Scientists are unsure why all of a sudden the geyser is experiencing a string of eruptions, something that has happened in the past but not for decades.

In an odd coincidence, earlier today we asked rhetorically “what could go wrong” if millions of Americans trust a DNA collecting company – in this case ancestry.com – with their genetic code. At almost the exact same time, Bloomberg reported that the Israeli-based consumer genealogy website, MyHeritage had been hacked, and that the email addresses and password information linked to more than 92 million user accounts have been “compromised.”
According to MyHeritage, its security officer had received a message from a researcher who unearthed a file named “myheritage” containing email addresses and hashed passwords of 92,283,889 of its users on a private server outside the company.

A few weeks back, the government of Sweden sent out a booklet to every household in the country urging citizens to prepare for war or other crises.
A few months back, they told citizens that they should be prepared to last for at least a week without any help from the government.

A major wildfire is sweeping through the Chernobyl nuclear disaster area. The authorities have deployed dozens of fire trucks as firefighting aircraft bombard the radioactive exclusion zone with massive amounts of water.
The fire inside the Chernobyl ‘dead zone,’ which is now part of Ukraine, started on Tuesday morning, when dry grass was ignited, local emergency services said in a statement. The wildfire subsequently reached a forest, where up to 10 hectares (24 acres) are now in flames.

Mother Nature’s wrath came down on an American Airlines plane after a hail storm shattered its windshield and damaged its nose cone, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing.
American Airlines flight AA1897, which departed from San Antonio just after midnight on Sunday, was only in the air for one hour before the pilots declared an emergency. That emergency was the hail storm wreaking serious damage to the aircraft’s windshield and nose cone.

I have found several locations in this chain of islands that are very interesting. At least two different sites show proof of having an ancient civilization being present in the area. This region is actually what is left of a massive mini-continent that was mostly submerged after rising ocean waters.
The two areas are similar in design and show clear indications of being worked by man. There are also no roads or access ways up to these locations. The french science centers and locations are near the ports and waterways. The entire landscape is rather stunning.
This is a location that most people don’t even realize exists. And there are no current reports of anything going on on these ridges or sites. There is also no info on any megalithic or ancient sites being discover on these ridges.

Now that the Trump global trade war ceasefire is over with both allies (Canada, EU, Mexico) and adversaries (China), the hot takes are coming in, and none more exhaustive than a note by Goldman Sachs released overnight, in which economist Alec Phillips writes that less than two weeks after Steve Mnuchin declared that the “trade war is on hold,” a statement which China trade hawk Peter Navarro subsequently blasted as inaccurate, Trump’s policy has shifted substantially and “following trade announcements over the last few days, the trade war does not appear to be “on hold” but simply “on”, leaving even longtime observers of trade policy confused about the direction from here.”
So how should one try to make sense of Trump’s unique, confusing negotiating style? According to Goldman, at the start of the Trump Administration, “reciprocity” was the watchword guiding trade policy…..
