One month after Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green grandstanded on the floor “I do not do this for political purposes,” a second Democrat has now formally introduced his own article of impeachment against Trump. California Rep Brad Sherman follows the same path as Green, accusing the president of obstructing justice during the federal investigation of Russia’s 2016 election interference.
As a reminder, Green’s criticisms in June focused on Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey, who was leading the administration’s probe into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 elections.
The chances of anything coming from Mars have taken a downward turn with the finding that the surface of the red planet contains a “toxic cocktail” of chemicals that can wipe out living organisms.
Experiments with compounds found in the Martian soil show that they are turned into potent bactericides by the ultraviolet light that bathes the planet, effectively sterilising the upper layers of the dusty landscape.
The discovery has wide-ranging implications for the hunt for alien life on the fourth rock from the sun and suggests that missions will have to dig deep underground to find past or present life if it lurks there. The most hospitable environment may lie two or three metres beneath the surface where the soil and any organisms are shielded from intense radiation. “At those depths, it’s possible Martian life may survive,” said Jennifer Wadsworth, a postgraduate astrobiologist at Edinburgh University.
Wadsworth’s research was driven by the discovery of powerful oxidants known as perchlorates in the Martian soil some years back. Hints of perchlorates first showed up in tests performed by Nasa’s Viking lander missions 40 years ago, but were confirmed recently by the space agency’s Phoenix lander and Mars rover, Curiosity. In 2015, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted signs of perchlorates in what appeared to be wet and briny streaks that seeped down Martian gullies and crater walls.
Many scientists suspected that perchlorates would be toxic for microbial Martians, but in theory at least, alien bacteria might find a way to use the chemicals as an energy source. If life could thrive in perchlorate-rich brines, then aliens might be thriving in the damp patches on Mars.
Working with Charles Cockell, an astrobiologist at Edinburgh, Wadsworth looked at what happened to Bacillus subtilis, a common soil bacterium and regular Earthly contaminant found on space probes, when it was mixed with magnesium perchlorate and blasted with ultraviolet rays similar to those witnessed on Mars. She found that the bugs were wiped out twice as fast when perchlorate was present. Other perchlorates found on Mars had a similar bactericidal effect.
One of the world’s largest icebergs ever recorded has sheared off from the Larsen C ice shelf on the Antarctic peninsula.
The rift, or crack, in the ice shelf – which are floating sheets of ice connected to land — began in 2010 and has grown steadily since then.
Now, the iceberg, which is roughly the size of Delaware, will gracefully drift away from the ice shelf over the next few weeks.
As for what happens next, the berg could remain in the region, where the ocean is quite cold, and stick around for years, perhaps even decades. Or it may move north where it would melt more quickly.

Banks and credit card issuers will no longer be allowed to use private arbitration clauses to prevent class action lawsuits, thanks to a new rule set forth by the CFPB. The new rules have been two years in the making.
CFPB chief Richard Cordray said in a statement that through the clause, people are forced to “go it alone or give up.”
“Our new rule will stop companies from sidestepping the courts and ensure that people who are harmed together can take action together,” he added.
Some form of mandatory arbitration clause is utilized by banks representing 44 percent of insured deposits and by card issuers who represent more than half of the total credit card debt, the CFPB reported in 2015.
The clauses usually call for private mediated disputes that do not take place in public courts. This virtually eliminates any attempt of a class action lawsuit by a band of consumers. While the new rule does not stop companies from including arbitration agreements in contracts, it does stop them from avoiding class action lawsuits.

Enrollment at the University of Missouri (Mizzou) has continued plummeting, with the 25 percent decline reported in 2016 increasing to a 35 percent decline, according to a figure reported Sunday.

A C-130 has crashed in LeFlore County, claiming at least five lives, officials said.
Sheriff Ricky Banks said there are five confirmed dead as of 6:15 p.m. and that there are supposed to be nine people aboard.
LeFlore County deputy coroner Will Gnemi has confirmed that the coroner’s office has been called to the scene. He said they are still looking for victims, so he doesn’t know.
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency Director Lee Smithson said the plane is a C-130. It crashed on the Sunflower-Leflore county line, he said.
He said it’s also unknown to him at this point if the plane came from the Tennessee National Guard or if it is active duty Air Force, but the preliminary report is that it came from the Millington base.

The US has begun naval exercises with Japan and India, with the US Navy saying the drills will help the countries tackle maritime threats in the Asia-Pacific region. China says it hopes the cooperation isn’t aimed against a “third country.”
The US Navy, the Indian Navy, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) began the Malabar 2017 exercises in Chennai, India, on Sunday, according to the US Pacific Fleet.
The annual drills are aimed at addressing “the variety of shared threats to maritime security in the Indo-Asia Pacific,” the Navy said last week.

More than half of the memos former FBI chief James Comey wrote as personal recollections of his conversations with President Trump about the Russia investigation have been determined to contain classified information, according to interviews with officials familiar with the documents.
