A disused TV tower in the Russian city of Ekaterinburg was demolished on Saturday as part of reconstruction plans for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The demolition took place despite protests from locals who believed the eye-catching structure had become a recognizable part of the city’s heritage.
Construction on the tower began in 1983 but was halted in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was believed to be the world’s tallest abandoned structure, standing at 214 metres with 26 floors and no lift.
Local media report that the structure will be replaced with an ice-hockey arena that can seat up to 15,000 fans.

A rescue operation was underway on Friday after 150 whales became stranded in Hamelin Bay, 315 kilometres south of Perth in Western Australia. The mammals are believed to be short-finned pilot whales. The stranded animals were first spotted by a commercial fisherman early on Friday. Later in the day, only 15 whales were still alive.
