Nine members of the Venezuelan armed forces have been imprisoned for taking part in a plot to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro five years ago, after courts rejected their final appeal.
The military men were sentenced to a minimum of five years in jail for “preparing in 2014 an insurrectional and destabilizing movement, called Operation Jericho, against the government,” according to a statement from the Venezuelan court. Their sentence was handed down after multiple appeals were rejected and dismissed by lower courts and a court-martial.

President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia would deploy its first regiment of hypersonic nuclear-capable missiles next year, saying the move meant his country now had a new type of strategic weapon.
Putin was speaking after overseeing what the Kremlin said was a pre-deployment test of the new missile system, called Avangard.
“This test, which has just finished, ended with complete success,” Putin told a government meeting.

Gold rose 1 percent to scale a six-month peak on Monday as sliding stock markets and concerns about a global economic slowdown sapped risk sentiment, driving investors to seek safety in the precious metal.
Spot gold XAU= was trading at $1,268.49 per ounce at 1:57 p.m. EST (1857 GMT) in thin trade ahead of Tuesday’s Christmas holiday. The metal hit its highest since late June at $1,269.49 earlier in the session.
U.S. gold futures GCv1 settled up 1.1 percent at $1,271.80 per ounce.
“Gold has continued to be firm here in the course of equity market weakness and an ongoing bevy of factors that are concerns for the market such as trade wars, interest rate hikes and others,” said David Meger, director of metals trading at High Ridge Futures.

A surge in earthquakes have been plaguing Sicily after Europe’s highest and most active volcano began spewing lava from a new fracture. Mount Etna’s eruption covered nearby villages in ash and shut down the Catania airport.
Mount Etna marked Christmas celebrations with a spike in seismic activity, causing a new fracture to open up at the base of a southeast crater at around 11 am Monday morning. Soon after, lava flows began pouring out of the crack, eventually sending an ash column spewing eastward into the sky. People on the mountainside were urged to evacuate the area immediately.

A tsunami triggered by a volcano has hit coastlines along the Sunda Strait in western Indonesia, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 160 others, local officials say. The death toll is expected to rise.
It happened late on Saturday when an eruption intensified at Mount Anak Krakatau, which is located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. It’s believed to have caused an underwater landslide, which in turn triggered a tsunami.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency. said at least 20 people were killed and 165 others have been injured. The death toll is expected to rise because some communities have not yet been reached.
“The tsunami was not triggered by an earthquake,” he said. “It’s possible that it was triggered by an underwater landslide due to the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. At the same time there was high tide because of the full moon. So there was a combination of natural phenomena, tsunami and high tide.”
