Even as Donald Trump is desperate to show to the US population, and especially his voter base, some actual achievement before his first 100 days run out next weekend, prompting him to tell AP that he will unveil a “tremendous” tax ut plan next week (recall he did the same in February), the Trump administration is quietly preparing for the possibility of a government shutdown, even though the president and his staff believe one is unlikely to occur.
With the Senate reconvening on Monday and the House of Representatives on Tuesday after a two-week recess, lawmakers will have only four days to pass a spending package to keep the government open beyond April 28, when funding expires for numerous federal programs. “I think we want to keep the government open,” Trump said on Thursday, adding he thinks Congress can pass the funding legislation and perhaps also a revamped healthcare bill.
Trump’s wish may be problematic: as a reminder, the government will shut down midnight on April 28 if Congress cannot agree on a spending bill. As reported over the past week, the measure hit various snags over Trump’s demands to include funding for Trump’s border wall and a debate over money for an ObamaCare insurer subsidy program, both programs which virtually assure the spending bill will not pass.
As a result, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has begun to coordinate with government agencies to plan for a possible shutdown. “While we do not expect a lapse, prudence and common sense require routine assessments will be made,” OMB Director Mick Mulvaney said in a statement.
The office set up a phone call to go over the agencies’ shutdown plans, which could include steps such as furloughs for federal workers. The OMB said the plans were reviewed ahead of a possible shutdown last December and are unlikely to be revised…

It’s always interesting to observe “new discoveries” that corroborate the accuracy of the scientific information published by Billy Meier – often decades earlier.

FBI Director, James Comey and CIA Director Mike Pompeo are headed to New Zealand this weekend for a highly secretive meeting with the ‘Five Eyes’ Spying Network. The New Zealand Herald reports:
The highly secretive meeting being held in Queenstown this weekend is a gathering of intelligence and security agencies related to the Five Eyes spying network, the Herald understands.
Among the people believed to be attending are Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director James Comey and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director Mike Pompeo.
It is understood about 15 agencies which carry out intelligence for Five Eyes – the spying partnership of the United States, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand – are attending the conference.
In a statement released yesterday, a spokesman for Prime Minister Bill English confirmed a number of senior officials were coming for a conference hosted by the Government, but would not reveal what the conference was.
“Due to specific security requirements we cannot comment further at this time. However, as police have pointed out they are not aware of a visit to Queenstown by a current or former head of state.”

A State Department employee left over from the Obama Administration was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury on charges that she used her position to secure gifts from Chinese spies in an effort to defraud the United States government.Candace Marie Claiborne, 60, allegedly received thousands of dollars in gifts over five years, in addition to vacations, an apartment, Apple electronics, and tuition to a Chinese fashion school, the indictment charged, according to The Daily Caller.
The State Department employee then concealed the gifts and contacts with the Chinese, which violated her security-clearance requirement that she disclose any gifts from foreign nationals.
The arrest looks particularly bad for the Obama Administration, which has been accused of crooked activities since Trump won the presidency. According to various reports, Obama staffers who are still in the White House have been leaking sensitive materials in order to discredit President Trump. Claiborne isn’t known to be part of that effort, but her illegal activities speak to the kind of behavior that was occurring on Obama’s clock.
Claiborne had spent eight years in China. She had also spent time in Iraq, Sudan and several other foreign countries, according to the Washington post.
According to The Daily Caller, she wrote in a journal that she could “generate 20k in 1 year” through a Chinese agent, according to an affidavit.
The indictment charged that Claiborne knew that the Chinese agents she was involved with were spies, and after she had been caught, told co-conspirators to erase the evidence, which resulted in her also being charged with obstructing justice, according to The Post.
Although the Chinese nationals involved were not named, Claiborne apparently had known one of them since at least 2007 and the other since 2012.
The charges ranged from obstructing justice to making false statements to wire fraud.
She was arrested on March 29. If convicted of the wire fraud charge, Claiborne’s Washington home and her savings account would be subject to forfeiture. Additionally, she could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of obstructing an official proceeding and making false statements to the FBI.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary McCord said that pursuing those like Claiborne who have endangered national security for personal gain was a “key priority of the National Security Division” of the Justice Department.

The U.S. power grid appears to have been hit with multiple power outages affecting San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles.
Officials report that business, traffic and day-to-day life has come to a standstill in San Francisco, reportedly the worst hit of the three major cities currently experiencing outages.
Power companies in all three regions have yet to elaborate on the cause, though a fire at a substation was the original reason given by San Francisco officials.
A series of subsequent power outages in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City left commuters stranded and traffic backed up on Friday morning. Although the outages occurred around the same time, there is as of yet no evidence that they were connected by anything more than coincidence.
The first outage occurred at around 7:20 a.m. in New York, when the power went down at the 7th Avenue and 53rd Street subway station, which sent a shockwave of significant delays out from the hub and into the rest of the subway system. By 11:30 a.m. the city’s MTA confirmed that generators were running again in the station, although the New York subways were set to run delayed into the afternoon.
Later in the morning, power outages were reported in Los Angeles International Airport, as well as in several other areas around the city.
The San Francisco Fire Department was responding to more than 100 calls for service in the Financial District and beyond, including 20 elevators with people stuck inside, but reported no immediate injuries. Everywhere, sirens blared as engines maneuvered along streets jammed with traffic.
