The ham radio license seems one of the bigger preparedness mysteries. Communications will be very important in any event, whether a local event, a regional event (usually weather), or an all out, nationwide event. The previous requirement of knowing Morse Code was enough to scare many away. Fortunately things have changed for the better, at least for Private Defense Network (PDN) purposes.
An amateur radio license is really a license to experiment. This does not concern us, initially. Many of you will get hooked and go on to experiment, and we encourage that. There is much to know about ham radio and best learned on the job.
This article is designed to get you on the air in a week or less, with a radio, for around $100. Usually less.
Since we are taking a different approach attaining your ham radio license, we suggest you first get a radio. Youโve seen this if youโve been looking: The Baofeng ( http://ift.tt/2rPpGRP ) is probably the best beginnerโs radio. Well, itโs cheap and it works well enough for a first time user. After you get your license you may find yourself in a spiral of more capable and expensive radios, but the Baofeng will work. Breaking a thirty some dollar radio is much better than breaking one that costs several hundred dollars. (Trust us: Weโve done it.) Buying the Baofeng will give you something tangible to play with while studying for the test. You can program it and listen to radio traffic. Instructions and videos are available on the net. How and where to begin
Earning your license requires you to pass a test. There are three different licenses available. This study method works well for the first two, the technician and General license. The third, the Extra Class license, is its own animal. The technician license will get you talking regionally and will be most useful for local communications in a disaster: Getting news in and out of the area or communicating with family members in a bad situation. The General class license opens up regional and worldwide communications, independent of infrastructure.
The tests are structured to help you earn your license without spending months or years understanding the subject. The technician test consists of 35 questions from a pool of 426. Each question has four multiple choice answers. Passing the test requires you to answer 26 of these questions correctly. These tests are administered monthly by Volunteer Examiners from the American Radio and Relay League (ARRL). There is no charge for the license, but the ARRL charges $15 to cover the costs of administering the test. That $15 and the $50 or so dollars you spent on the Baofeng and accessories gets you to the โ100 dollars or lessโ.

President Donald Trump expressed his condolences to the family of Otto Warmbier after the American college student passed away Monday following his detention in North Korea.
โMelania and I offer our deepest condolences to the family of Otto Warmbier on his untimely passing. There is nothing more tragic for a parent than to lose a child in the prime of life,โ Trump said in an official statement. โOur thoughts and prayers are with Ottoโs family and friends, and all who loved him.โ
Warmbier, 22, was arrested and imprisoned in North Korea after being found guilty of stealing a propaganda poster. He was released last week while in a coma for which the exact causes remain unknown.
Doctors who were treating him in Cincinnati said that Warmbier suffered a catastrophic brain injury shortly after his conviction around April 2016. He was detained in North Korea for 17 months.
Trump said in his statement: โOttoโs fate deepens my Administrationโs determination to prevent such tragedies from befalling innocent people at the hands of regimes that do not respect the rule of law or basic human decency. The United States once again condemns the brutality of the North Korean regime as we mourn its latest victim.โ

The Clintonโs have always been masters at โrunning out the clockโ itโs a tactic theyโve used successfully since 1978, when Bill Clinton became the youngest governor of Arkansas, and it seems that the Democrats have been using that exact political tactic of delay, hinder, detain and slow down the investigation on the terror attacks of September 11th 2012, in Benghazi, Libya, with the hope of โrunning out the clock.โ
However Congressman Gowdy isnโt someone easily intimidated or influenced into ending the investigation early until every rock is overturned, perhaps to the dismay of those Democratโs sitting on the committee and no doubt with the Obama White House.
The bogus issue once again raised by Clinton operatives was the original agreed time line of two years, by House Selection Committee in completing the investigation.
Which prompted an irritated Gowdy to respond in a scathing letter to Defense Secretary Ash Carter, singling out both the Pentagon chief and one of his top lieutenants, โintentionally mischaracterizes both the nature of the Committeeโs investigation and its interaction with the Department of Defense.โ
Gowdy continued: โIt is also riddled with factual inaccuracies, which not only does a disservice to the public but also does a disservice to the women and men who work for the Department of Defense,โ he continued. โYour staff is welcome to waste taxpayer dollars writing partisan, factually deficient letters to our Committee, coordinate the language with House Democrats, and then leak it to the media. That is your prerogativeโ.
Thereโs little doubt that the American people are getting perhaps for the first time, a โbirds-eye-viewโ of just how corrupt and deceitful our government has become, to the point of attempting to cover-up even the murder of 4-brave Americans tasked with protecting Americaโs interest and then being betrayed by those tasked with protecting them, and then stating; โwhat difference does it make?โ
