WeChat Pay and Alipay are the two most popular mobile payment methods in China, and they both provide a downloadable App for smartphone users. While almost all young and middle-aged Chinese have abandoned traditional payment methods, senior citizens who don’t know how to use smartphone technology usually stick to their old-fashioned cell phones and use credit cards to make payments.

When everyone was ordered to stay indoors during the past several months, the seniors ran into great difficulties. In the following video released from Tianjin, many seniors went to the natural gas provider to make up for missing payments. They have lived without natural gas ever since the utility bill was past due.

Transition: In late March, an old man who tried to go out for a walk was blocked by guards at the community checkpoint. The new lockdown rule required that everyone must scan their QR codes before entering or leaving the area. The old man explained that his phone did not have such an app. Instead of helping him install the app, a guard quarrelled with him and then started a fight with him.

A more tragic incident occurred in Wuhan on March 3. An old couple committed suicide together by jumping off their building. According to their neighbors, they lived alone and did not know how to order food online.

On Monday, May 19, U.S. President Donald Trump openly published a letter to Director-General Dr. Tedros of the WHO on Twitter, condemning the various failures of the organization in response to the pandemic. President Trump wrote, “if the WHO does not commit to major substantive improvements within 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the WHO permanent and reconsider our membership in the organization.”

On the same day, President Trump indicated to reporters that the Chinese Communist Party needs to be responsible for the pandemic and that the World Health Organization is the “puppet of China.”

In the open letter, President Trump stated that “the WHO consistently ignored credible reports of the virus spreading in Wuhan in early December 2019 or even earlier. The WHO failed to independently investigate credible reports that conflicted directly with the Chinese government’s official accounts.”

He criticized that the WHO was not willing to share important information with the world due to political reasons.

Despite receiving international recognition for their performance on epidemic control, Taiwan was still not invited to this year’s World Health Assembly (WHA). On this issue, Taiwanese Minister of Health Chen Shih-chung expressed that the WHO needs Taiwan. President Tsai Ing-wen also visited the Central Epidemic Command Center prior to her inauguration and invited the epidemic control team to attend the ceremony.

On the eve of May 20th, President Tsai Ing-wen personally visited the Central Epidemic Command Center to invite the national epidemic prevention team to the inauguration ceremony. She also brought in 10 types of “Tainan Good Noodles,” a gift from Huang Wei-cher, the mayor of Tainan.h

Tsai said: “(I brought in) ten kinds of ‘Tainan Good Noodles’ to show my gratitude to you all. May our epidemic prevention efforts be exhaustive in all aspects. Everyone here is a hero in the hearts of our people. I think, in fact, this noodle should later on be called ‘the Heroes’ Noodles.’”

In a video called “The Taiwan Model” it says: “People who are honest are braver than those who deceive themselves.” Tsai posted the video on Facebook on May 19, documenting the “Taiwan Model” in every part of society: “Many unsung heroes hold fast to their posts, the government and the people stood united to together protect Taiwan.” Though only 5 minutes long, the video has touched many netizens. The “Taiwan Model” also received great international recognition, however, Taiwan was still not invited to the World Health Assembly this year.

Tsai said, “The Secretariat of the WHO, under pressure, once again turned us down in inviting us to attend the WHA. I want to use this opportunity to seriously express my dissent. Taiwan will not give up its participation in international affairs just because it has been suppressed, and we will continue to work hard.”

Minister of Health Chen also added, “The WHO needs us. Many countries in the world, many leaders and representatives have said, it is not about pleading for Taiwan to join the WHO, but that the WHO also needs Taiwan. (Many) people have seen the Taiwan Model’s success,” in reference to U.S. Secretary of Health Alex Azar’s speech at the WHA in support of Taiwan’s participation. Chen said that the health of 23 million people should never be sacrificed for politics, and that despite the fact that Taiwan has not been able to enter the WHA for more than three years, the world has seen Taiwan’s efforts.

Wuhan authorities are currently collecting throat swab samples from 11 million residents in the city in order to identify asymptomatic CCP virus patients. Referred to as the “10-Day Battle” by communist authorities, it implies that one million specimens are to be collected each day.

The first two days of testing were caught on video, showing that local residents complained about the unsanitary conditions. The medical workers who were collecting throat samples did not change or disinfect their gloves between tests, making the residents extremely worried about cross-infections.

In a latest video taken on May 18, residents of Wuhan’s Prosperous Era Community were furious when they noticed that 20 people’s specimens were not individually labelled and were put together into one small bottle to be sent to test centers.

An insider revealed that there are more than 6,000 residents in this community, but the medical staff only brought 600 test kits.

Many Chinese netizens left comments for this video:

One of them said, “That defines the CCP [Chinese Communist Party]. They themselves know this is a political show, and they don’t even bother to pretend to be responsible in this show.”

Another one wrote, “Even the United States cannot perform 11 million tests in ten days. As it is an order from the Chinese central authorities, and the lower levels just need to pretend to do the job. That is so very CCP! Not to mention that other countries who imported the Chinese-made test kits have all found out that the accuracy rate is less than 30 percent.”

“Now I am convinced that the authorities are doing this mass testing in Wuhan because they don’t want to throw out those faulty test kits that other countries returned [to China].”
