On January 16 southfront.org faced a hacker attack. As a result, our website was temporarily out of service.
The main goal of the attack was to disrupt Southfront’s work on the website. The attack also sought to get data about SouthFront team members and to damage the project’s donation flow in this already complicated period. As you recall, in December, SouthFront collected only 85% of the minimal monthly budget and was forced to reduce the number of produced content during the first week of 2018.
Luckily, it seems that the hackers did not achieve their main objectives. However, there is a chance that the hackers obtained some technical information that can be used to create forgeries or fake news, in an attempt to discredit SouthFront. Meanwhile, the number of phishing attacks aimed at emails of the project and its members have increased exponentially.
We expect that soon SouthFront will face more media and hacker attacks from corporations and interest groups that want to censor independent news outlets and independent coverage of the military and geo-political issues of our time.

SouthFront continues its work in 2018. We fought through all threats in 2017 and overcame recent difficulties.
Right now, SouthFront is working to finalize the announced in-depth documentary on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (Jabhat al-Nusra).
The total length of the documentary is about 46 minutes and it includes the following sections:
1. History
2. Main operations and spheres of influence
3. Structure
4. Rebranding
5. Relations and relationships with other groups
6. Idlib de-escalation zone
7. Financing and communication with external sponsors
8. Loss of influence after the battle for Aleppo and the role in Syria after ISIS
9. Conclusion
In December 2017, the project was able to collect 85% of the minimum budget needed to cover our usual activities. So, SouthFront was forced to reduce partially its content in the first half of January 2018.
At the same time, in addition to the main Hayat Tahrir al-Sham documentary, SouthFront is working on one more documentary covering ideology and propaganda means of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
In the period from January 1 to January 12, the project collected 1001 USD. This is only about 20% of the minimal monthly budget [5000 USD].

Thanks to your support, SouthFront collected 4,270 USD in December. This is about 85% of the minimal needed amount [5,000] to continue the project’s work in January.
So, SouthFront is forced to reduce the number of produced content at least during the first week of 2018. However, thanks to your direct support we are aspiring to get back to a full-scale content production within a week.

SouthFront also released two exclusive documentaries: 1) a 19-minute long documentary about the Israeli Defense Forces, their military capabilities and prospects of the Third Lebanon War. 2) a 27-minute long documentary analyzing the military and political trends that will shape 2017.
