New York City Plans to Build $1 Billion Barrier Wall Around Manhattan
Today, more than five years after Hurricane Sandy hit New York City, the five boroughs are still recovering from the storm.
Sandy did $19 billion in damage to NYC, and the rate of development along the city’s coastlines has only increased. New York now has more residents living in high-risk flood zones than any other city in the nation.
Local city-planning experts have worried how NYC will cope when the next superstorm inevitably hits the city.

DARK SKY: Massive Long-Term Power Outage Drill, Troops Going Door to Door
The Wisconsin National Guard is helping communities prepare for a possible long-term mass power outage.
A full-scale training exercise known as Dark Sky is May 15-17 in Brown, Calumet, Dane, Fond du Lac, Milwaukee, Outagamie and Winnebago Counties.
Utility companies, law enforcement and first responders will be part of the power outage simulation.
The National Guard says the public may notice military presence and increased emergency personnel during the exercise.
The National Guard says the training exercise is to prepare for a possible attack on the state’s infrastructure.

They Are Now Warning That ‘Ungoverned’ Internet Poses New Threats to Infrastructure
Not by terrorists with guns or knives or vehicles as weapons — but instead by hackers who in March disabled the city’s public services with ransomware. The cyber offensive left Atlantans unable to pay bills online, and visitors to the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, unable to connect to WiFi.
And around the same time yet nearly 700 miles away in Baltimore, in a seemingly unrelated attack, hackers disabled the computer system supporting emergency calls in that city.
Both incidents underscored the vulnerability of many public computing networks — and the damage that hackers in the dark corners of the internet can inflict on vital services.
Cyberattacks have typically been carried out by criminals and organized gangs –- but many fear public infrastructure will be an increasing target in traditional warfare.

Scientists In Operation Ice Bridge Baffled by Mysterious Arctic Ice Circles
On April 14 2018, Operation Ice Bridge captured images over the Beaufort Sea, 50 miles northwest of the Mackenzie River Delta. The images, taken by mission scientist John Sonntag, show unusual or “curious” circles that the government agency can’t explain. “We saw these sorta-circular features only for a few minutes today,” Sonntag wrote from the field.

Colorado Senate Bill Seeks to Punish Teachers with JAIL TIME If They Go On Strike
As Colorado teachers prepare to walk out next Friday to call for higher wages and increased school funding, some state lawmakers are working to make sure any plans to strike don’t go unpunished by introducing a bill in the Senate that could put teachers in jail for speaking out.
The bill, SB18-264, would prohibit public school teacher strikes by authorizing school districts to seek an injunction from district court. A failure to comply with the injunction would “constitute contempt of court” and teachers could face not only fines but up to six months in county jail, the bill language reads.

The New Alaskan Oil Rush
ConocoPhillips is coming off of an incredible exploration season, reportedly the best they’ve had in over a decade, and they have Alaskan oil to thank for it. The company stuck big in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A) this winter, successfully finding oil at all six of their test wells (three exploration and three appraisal), which means chances are good that the trans-Alaska pipeline system could soon be seeing a lot more (much-needed) action.

US Navy Wants Undersea Gas Stations for Underwater Drones
A California company is working on an underwater refueling station that can top off the fuel cells of undersea surveillance drones, allowing the vehicles to venture farther and work longer.
Needless to say, the US Navy is interested in that kind of technology. The sailing branch is even exploring ways to tap sea-bottom thermal vents in order to keep power flowing to underwater gas stations.
Teledyne, based in Thousand Oaks, California, showed off its undersea power station alongside Gavia, the company’s popular underwater surveillance drone, at the Sea-Air-Space Exposition in Maryland in April.

FAA Orders Emergency Directive, Southwest Cancels Dozens of Flights
Southwest Airlines Co LUV.N said it canceled about 40 flights on Sunday, or 1 percent of those scheduled, as it inspects engines after last week’s deadly accident in Pennsylvania.
The airline said the cancellations were the result of the company’s announcement on Tuesday that it would over the next 30 days begin inspecting other CFM56-7B engines, manufactured by CFM International, the engine involved in last week’s accident.
At the time, Southwest said those inspections would cause some impact on operations, but it has not said how many engines it planned to inspect.

Proper Power Consumption Is Key In Surviving A Long Term Lights Out Event
After testing just a few of the everyday items people use, its was clear that a few of them consume way more power than others. In a true survival situation, you will want to conserve as much energy as you can.
The Initial Test Results showed that running a heater or a small double burner to cook with consumed the most power. Having a fireplace to heat your home and to use for cooking would be key. This would save power in the two biggest consuming areas tested. This would leave the refrigerator as the highest tested if you had a fireplace.
If you don’t have a backup power source, you may want to add it into your plan as soon as you can. It will only improve your odds of surviving a long term lights out event. Stay Tuned for More!

First Wave of Migrant Caravan Hits US Border In California
The first wave of the migrant caravan has hit the US border, with a group of about 50 seeking asylum at the Tijuana crossing into California.
The group of 50 Central American migrants who set out from southern Mexico in late March arrived in Tijuana, Mexico on Wednesday, after splintering off from the original caravan of 1,500.
‘Since yesterday, some began to cross into the United States to turn themselves in from Tijuana and request asylum. We understand more of (the migrants) will do the same,’ said Jose Maria Garcia, director of Juventud 2000, an organization dedicated to assisting migrants.

Hayward Bay Fault Could Be More Dangerous Than San Andreas: It’s a “Ticking Time Bomb”
The U.S. Geological Survey released a report Wednesday predicting that there could be dire consequences if a major earthquake hits the second-largest fault in Northern California. The USGS simulated a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on the Hayward Fault, which runs up and down the East Bay Area through Berkeley, Oakland, Hayward, Fremont and Milpitas. The results show that an earthquake of that scale could kill up to 800 people and cause more than $100 billion in total damage.

The Democratic Party on Friday sued President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, the Russian government and the Wikileaks group, claiming a broad illegal conspiracy to help Trump win the 2016 election.
The multimillion-dollar lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court says that “In the Trump campaign, Russia found a willing and active partner in this effort” to mount “a brazen attack on American Democracy,” which included Russian infiltration of the Democratic Party computer network.
The Trump campaign, according to the lawsuit, “gleefully welcomed Russia’s help.”

Big Move! Turkey Attempts to Ditch Dollar, Will Repatriate All Gold From US
After Venezuela, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands prudently repatriated a substantial portion (if not all) of their physical gold held at the NY Fed or other western central banks in recent years, this morning Turkey also announced that it has decided to repatriate all its gold stored in the US Federal Reserve and deliver it to the Istanbul Stock Exchange, according to reports in Turkey’s Yeni Safak. It won’t be the first time Turkey has asked the NY Fed to ship the country’s gold back: in recent years, Turkey repatriated 220 tons of gold from abroad, of which 28.7 tons was brought back from the US last year.
