As the Aug. 21 full solar eclipse grows near, Lincoln City resident Laura Green and her neighbors are at ground zero.
The path of totality covers nearly all of Lincoln County, turning towns from Pacific City to Waldport, dark for as long as two minutes. While no one is entirely sure how many visitors will travel to the coast for the event, one estimate for north Lincoln City alone puts the number at 40,000 – more than 10 times the 3,500 visitors the area usually sees on a busy summer weekend.
Green’s neighborhood plans to stock up on water, fuel, trash bags – and snow fencing.
“We are in a really, really good prime viewing location,” said Laura Green, whose home is perched atop a ridge overlooking the ocean. “My insurance agent suggested spending a couple of bucks and buying snow fencing to keep people off the property.”
Advice from government officials sounds a bit ominous: Prepare to shelter in place. Purchase food and fuel at least a week in advance. Don’t expect to be able to use a cell phone in an emergency.
“ODOT expects traffic to completely stop,” Jim Kusz, fire department spokesman, told a recent Chamber of Commerce luncheon on eclipse preparedness. “Take care of yourself. Emergency response will be slow and delayed. Don’t burn your deck down in a barbeque, don’t cut yourself. Really prepare yourself and be vigilant.”

Two months after the Fed fined Deutsche Bank a paltry $157 million for manipulating currency markets after the German bank’s traders were found to be using “chat rooms” to rig FX trading, we learn that there was more gambling going on here, and on Monday the Fed announced that it will fine French BNP Paribas $246 million “for the firm’s unsafe and unsound practices in the foreign exchange (FX) markets.”
According to the press release, the Board levied the fine “after finding deficiencies in BNP Paribas’s oversight of, and internal controls over, FX traders who buy and sell U.S. dollars and foreign currencies for the firm’s own accounts and for customers.” And, not surprisingly we once again find that FX rigging was confined chat rooms:

The federal government will begin funding Texas National guardsmen working on the border as part of Operation Secure Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday.
“The taxpayers of Texas have funded border security, a federal responsibility, for far too long,” said Gov. Abbott. “I am grateful that the federal government and Congressional appropriators are stepping up and dedicating additional resources to provide for the safety and security of all Texans. The state of Texas also extends it gratitude to the men and women of the Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety for their continued commitment to securing our border.”

Most of the world’s Internet users lost access to YouTube for several hours Sunday after an attempt by Pakistan’s government to block access domestically affected other countries.
The outage highlighted yet another of the Internet’s vulnerabilities, coming less than a month after broken fiber-optic cables in the Mediterranean took Egypt off line and caused communications problems from the Middle East to India.
An Internet expert explained that Sunday’s problems arose when a Pakistani telecommunications company accidentally identified itself to Internet computers as the world’s fastest route to YouTube. But instead of serving up videos of skateboarding dogs, it sent the traffic into oblivion.
On Friday, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority ordered 70 Internet service providers to block access to YouTube.com, because of anti-Islamic movies on the video-sharing site, which is owned by Google.

Over the past couple of months I’ve been covering some disturbing developments at national airports that seem to show an acceleration of the plan to use biometric identification in a variety of ways.
On May 19th I reported on a new program initiated by Delta Airlines at Minneapolis-St. Paul airport to have automated baggage kiosks for “priority customers” that will first scan a traveler’s passport, then their face in order to match identity to checked luggage. It was promoted as a “pilot program” that Delta launched to seek customer feedback in the hope that it could be rolled out more widely in the future.
With that as the backdrop, if one weren’t already alarmed by this trend, DHS is now laying out a clear plan for mandatory face scans for all travelers to foreign destinations, stating that “the only way for an individual to ensure he or she is not subject to collection of biometric information when traveling internationally is to refrain from traveling.” That’s right, no opt-out, just stay home.

There have been a few mid-level earthquakes once again hit the area of Northwest Yellowstone. The activity is happening in an area where a known fault line runs. The past swarm was located in this exact same area. The activity also looks to be fault related and not magma on the move underground.
USGS Has also claimed that the Long Valley Caldera in California is Moving. The movement doesn’t look to be happening at a fast rate and they can’t determine the exact cause of it.

Thanks to a geomagnetic storm from the sun, skywatchers across most of Canada and the northern U.S. should get a special treat Sunday night into Monday morning: A visit from the aurora borealis, aka the Northern Lights.
The sky spectacle should be visible in states such as Washington, Idaho, Montana and other northern states, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
Folks in cities such as Seattle and Spokane all have a fair chance of seeing the aurora.
KGW chief meteorologist Matt Zafino said while chances are slim, there is a possibility some in northeast Oregon may get a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Fuel theft in Mexico used to consist of a few villagers drilling holes in Pemex pipelines and carrying away just enough gasoline to fill their vehicles and maybe a couple extra gallons to sell on the side of the freeway. But as The Columbian notes, illegally tapping into pipelines and stealing gas from Mexico’s state-owned oil company has morphed into a very well organized criminal enterprise, run by well-armed regional cartels and supported by distribution on a commercial scale to factories and petrol stations.

A medium-sized solar flare is hurtling toward Earth, set to arrive Sunday with intense solar particles of ionizing radiation lasting through Monday. This sounds scary, but Houston won’t feel much from this event.
There will be no danger on the ground. For areas north of 55°N latitude, which includes much of Canada, Alaska, northern Europe and Russia, there could be interference in the shortwave radio bands affecting communications with commercial pilots flying over the north pole, en route to Asia from America and vice versa. In some cases, airlines can delay or cancel flights, fearing extended radio blackouts over desolate arctic terrain. (Imagine if there was an emergency and the pilot couldn’t radio for help?) Amateur radio operators (ham) using “intercontinental”, 10 meter or lower HF frequencies could experience propagation issues, greatly reducing their over-the-horizon reach.
