CBS Los Angeles reports a Ground-based Interceptor, which is scheduled to be launched between noon and 4 p.m. Tuesday, is part of a missile defense test, according to the Air Force base.
The goal of the unprecedented launch is to simulate a North Korean ICBM aimed at the U.S. homeland, officials said last week.
Vandenberg said the missile will attempt to fly over the Pacific Ocean and intercept some sort of “target object” being launched from the central Pacific Ocean.

“President Moon said it was very shocking,” to hear the four additional launchers had been installed without being reported to the new government or to the public, presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan told a media briefing on Tuesday.
The deployment of the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system was approved by the previous conservative government in Seoul, which fell after then-President Park Geun-hye of the Saenuri Party was impeached under the corruption charges. Moon Jae-in, a Democrat, won the May 9 election and is in the process of power transition. A promise to review the controversial THAAD deal was part of his campaign.

The Pennsylvania plant, with one reactor still in operation, has lost revenue as power prices fell, Chicago-based Exelon said Tuesday in a filing. For the third consecutive year, the plant failed to win generating capacity payments last week in an auction held by PJM Interconnection LLC, the largest U.S. power market. Meanwhile, the generator has failed to win government subsidies or market reforms to enhance its viability, Exelon said.
The announcement underscores challenges facing U.S. nuclear power generators from plants burning cheap natural gas and rising output of wind and solar power. At least five nuclear power plants have retired in the past five years including Fort Calhoun in Nebraska, which closed in October. Entergy Corp. in December announced plans to close its Palisades plant in Michigan.
