At least 28 civilians were reportedly killed and 16 injured in US air strikes in Afghanistan’s Herat and Logar provinces. People looked on as wind and rain thrashed Naples, Florida, as the category 3 hurricane descended upon the city on Sunday. Approximately 6.3 million Floridians were either ordered or advised to evacuate the region. It is estimated that more than a million houses are without power. Hurricane Irma swept across the Cuban capital causing widespread flooding. Havana’s landmark seawall and surrounding streets were all submerged under water as Irma continued to pound the city for more than 12 hours. The 8km (5mile) stretch of coast was hit with waves up to 8 metres (26 feet) high. Last minute evacuations of up to 10,000 residents in central Havana were organised in the capital.

Hundreds of members of the far-right Golden Dawn party participated in a torch lit rally at the Thermopylae Pass, some 200 kilometres (124 miles) from Athens, on Saturday,to commemorate the Battle of Thermopylae from 480 BC, in which King Leonidas of Sparta allegedly held back thousands of Persians with only 300 Spartans for three days. The crowd of party supporters was seen holding flaming torches and singing the national anthem as s refugee solidarity gathering was being held at a refugee facility close to the narrow coastal area. The battle of Thermopylae was fought between an alliance of South Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas, and the Persian Empire of Xerxes I during the second Persian invasion of Greece. After a three-day standoff all Greek warriors, including 300 Spartans, were killed.
