Just in time for the weekend, the Associated Press reported on Friday that the Department of Homeland Security had notified 21 states earlier that day that their election systems had been targeted by malicious cyber actors. The states and DHS quickly jumped to the conclusion that Russia had ordered the cyberattacks, even though it was reported that the identity or identities of the perpetrators were inconclusive Yet, the news spread like wildfire after readers had been primed as reports of possible infiltartion of state election systems had circulated for nearly a year. Even so, for many states, the call Friday from the Department of Homeland Security was the first official confirmation that their election systems had, in fact, been targeted by hackers.

Eamonn Ansbro has a Masters degree in Astronomy from University of Western Sydney, Australia, and an MPhil and PhD (ABD) degree in Astronomy from the Planetary Space Science Research Institute at Open University (UK).
He is director of Kingsland Observatory, one of 5 Observatory research centres in astronomy in Ireland. His main involvement for some years has been in Solar System studies and Instrumentation.
In recent years he has been involved in SETI . He founded SETI Kingsland which has been pioneering a fundamental new approach within SETI.
This new SETI approach has resulted in breakthrough technology for applying it to communications with extraterrestrial civilizations.
Having raged at President Trump’s “suicide mission” on Saturday, North Korea’s foreign minister Ri Yong Ho called for an impromptu press conference this morning following President Trump’s extended travel ban, in which the diplomat said that Trump’s recent tweet that DPRK’s leadership would not be around much longer amounted to “a declaration of war” and added that North Korea has “every right to take countermeasures against the United States, including to shoot down American jets outside the DPRK’s airspace” as part of its right to self-defense under the United Nations charter.
A new extended travel ban announced by Donald Trump’s administration will restrict travel to the US from North Korea and Venezuela, as well as from Iran, Chad, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia – countries included in previous bans – based on “security or safety threat.”
The new restrictions, which come as a result of a review of previous travel bans challenged in American courts, are set to take effect on October 18.

The war of words between Trump and Kim escalated once again in the late hours on Saturday night, when President Trump sent another belligerent tweet directed at North Korea saying that if the country’s foreign minister was speaking for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in his threatening speech at the United Nations, “they won’t be around much longer.”
The Environmental Protection Agency says it has recovered 517 containers of “unidentified, potentially hazardous material” from highly contaminated toxic waste sites in Texas that flooded last month during Hurricane Harvey.
The agency has not provided details about which Superfund sites the material came from, why the contaminants at issue have not been identified and whether there’s a threat to human health.
The one-sentence disclosure about the 517 containers was made Friday night deep within a media release from the Federal Emergency Management Agency summarizing the government’s response to the devastating storm.
