US President Donald Trump spoke from his Mar-a-Lago resort following the airstrikes, accusing Assad of using nerve gas that killed civilians in Idlib.
Calling it a “targeted military strike,” Trump said the Homs airfield was where the chemical gas attack earlier this week originated from.
Trump described the attack as defending a “vital national security interest” and called upon “civilized nations” to help end the “slaughter and bloodshed in Syria.”
“There can be no dispute that Syria used banned chemical weapons, violated its obligations under the chemical weapons convention, and ignored the urging of the UN security council,” Trump said. “Years of previous attempts at changing Assad’s behaviour have all failed and failed very dramatically.”
Fifty-nine US Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles were launched from the US warships USS Porter and USS Ross from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said in a statement. Davis added that “extraordinary measures” were taken “to avoid civilian casualties,” and that “every precaution was taken” to minimize the “risk to personnel at the airfield.”

The United States launched dozens of cruise missiles Thursday night at a Syrian airfield in response to what it believes was Syria’s use of banned chemical weapons that killed at least 100 people, the U.S. military said.
Two U.S. warships in the Mediterranean Sea, the USS Ross and the USS Porter, fired 59 Tomahawk missiles intended for a single target — Shayrat Airfield in Homs province in western Syria, the Defense Department said. That’s the airfield from which the United States believes the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fired the banned weapons.

‘The Syrian Air Force has destroyed a warehouse in Idlib province, where ammunition dump containing chemical weapons was being produced by militants before being delivered to Iraq, the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman has said.
The strike, which was launched midday Tuesday, targeted a major rebel ammunition depot east of the town of Khan Sheikhoun, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov said in a statement.

Millions of people in Northern Syria have been left without water following John McCain’s unexpected visit to the region last month.
Senator McCain made a secret visit to Northern Syria at the end of February, which was followed by a meeting with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to reports, McCain requested that Turkey shut down the supply of water going into Northern Syria as part of a plan to undermine Syrian President Assad.

According to the Kurdish Hawar News Agency, Turkey cut water supplies to Syria around Feb. 23, which subsequently forced a hydroelectric plant at the Tishrin Dam to shut down while also significantly reducing water levels on its associated reservoir. The dam supplies both water and power to key parts of northern Syria, such as the city of Manbij and other parts of the predominantly Kurdish Kobani Canton.
The dam is one of several major dams along the Euphrates River. Just downstream from Tishrin lies the Tabqa Dam and its reservoir Lake Assad, which supplies Aleppo with most of its power and drinking water, as well as irrigation water for over 640,000 hectares (2,500 square miles) of farmland. A city official in Manbij told Hawar that the city would provide generator fuel to civilians to help cope with the blackout that has resulted from the river being cut off. The same official added that Turkey had “violated the international conventions of water and rivers energy by cutting off Euphrates water.”..

The US Defense Department presented a tentative plan (strategy review) «to rapidly defeat» the Islamic State (IS) terror group to the president’s national security team on February 27. The paper is more of a general outline of the options currently available than a detailed, step-by-step strategy for achieving the final victory. Defense Secretary James Mattis described the report as «a framework for a broader discussion» of a strategy to be developed over time, rather than a ready-to-execute military plan. «it’s not a ‘check-the-block, pick A or B or C’ kind of a plan», as he put it. The report will serve as a basis for broader discussion with the new National Security Advisor and White House.
The review offers plans of actions around the world, not just in Iraq and Syria. The Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Captain Jeff Davis said the preliminary plan is trans-regional. «This is not just a military plan. It draws upon all elements of national power-diplomatic, financial, cyber, intelligence (and) public diplomacy», according to him. Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the emerging strategy will target not just Islamic State militants but also Al Qaeda and other extremist organizations in the Middle East and beyond. The general said the United States is evaluating the possibility of basing troops in Iraq long after the recapture of Mosul from the IS. That raises the possibility that a longer-term American presence alongside local partners in Syria may also be required.
